On Tuesday, September 11, 2001,
(now almost ten years ago) most of
our lives changed forever. Do you re-
member where you were that Tuesday
morning? Like those that worked at
the Pentagon and World Trade Cen-
ters, most were on their way to work
or to school. Moms and dads kissed
their children goodbye at the daycare
center, promising to, "see you soon."
Wives kissed husbands and passed
them their morning coffee with no
knowledge that they would not be
home for dinner that night. For the
thousands of lives lost to the tragedy
of 9/11, remember that most
of them were just like us middle-class Americans going to w
making a living and taking care of their family.
Yet, ten years later, the resounding question is still; Why?
There is a spiritual answer to the question. The Bible promises
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in t
ble (Psalm 46:1). If he is such a help in trouble, why did he athis trouble, this tragedy? If He is our refuge and strength, wh
this atrocity happen at all?
God made us with free will, thus we have freedom of choice. F
dom of will is an attribute we enjoy, for the most part. Free w
imperative, yet it is a bit overwhelming. Could God have stop
the terrorists? Yes, by removing their free will. Th en why didnt
In doing so, He would in essence also remove yours and mine
would have to prevent every human attempt to sin and attack
ers. We could no longer be free to make choices, because He w
trump at least some of our decisions. This would remove the f
dom to be human. This God will not do. He has created us in
image, thus granting us the freedom to choose, even to choos
atrocity like 9/11.
As long as there is life on this fallen planet, free will be misu
which results in sin; because it is the will of man, not the wi
God.
A second spiritual reason for this atrocity is just as clear: Sata

On 9-11, America joined that tragic
list of nations which have experi-
enced the atrocity of terrorism on
our own soil. From Israel to Ireland,
from the Balkans to Indonesia,
from Lebanon to Somalia, much of the world knows the grief and outrage
we feel today. What do we do now?
An old professor once advised me, Son, be kind to everyonebecause
everyones having a hard time. Wherever youre hurting today, Gods
word can help. Consider these practical lessons from Psalm 46 today.
First, run to God (v. 1). God is our refuge and strength. A refuge is a
place where we go to escape, to be sheltered and safe. But we mustchoose to go there. A refuge is no good unless we use it. If we choose to
stand the storm, the crisis, the tragedy alone, this refuge cannot help us.
When it seems hardest to trust in him; that is the time we need to trust in
Him the most. Run to God!
Second, refuse to fear(vs. 2-3). This is impossible in our own
strength and ability. If we have chosen to be in Gods refuge
and are empowered by his strength, we need not fear any-
thing the world can do to us. No matter how frightened we
feel about the present and the
future; we can choose to refuse to fear. Scripture says, God
did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love,
and of self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). Someone said it well:
Fear knocked at the door, faith answered, and there was no
one there. Run to God, and ask Him for His help as you refuse
to fear.
Third, release your hate (v. 9). Trust your enemies to
justice and righteousness. Our Lord will destroy all unr
ous people and nations, to the ends of the earth. There
place to hide from His righteous anger and retribution. A
military power can stand against His. Is there unfairn
the world? We know all too well. Yet we are admonish
obey Pauls word: Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be
ful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is po
as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyon
not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for Gods wfor it is written: It is mine to avenge; I will repay, say
LordDo not be overcome by evil, but overcome evi
good (Romans 12:17-19, 21).
Last; rest in faith. Our Father invites us to be still, and
that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I w
exalted in the earth (Psalms 46:10). Be still means to
rest, at calm, at peace. How is this possible in a crisis?
ture is clear: Do not be anxious about anything, but in e
thing, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, presen
requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcen
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in
Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7). God can give us peace which u
standing cannot produce. But we must trust in Him.
Our future is certain: I will be exalted among the nati

Given the success and overwhelming response to this

combining forces to produce a brand new musical for this

What Value Will Our Children See in a Place of Worship?
I can hardly believe it is September. Students have re-
turned to school. Vacations are coming to a screeching

the older we get the faster

Well, the school year has
officially started. We have
welcomed up our new 6th

party that featured a few

to watching all of our students grow closer to Christ in thisupcoming year.
One of the great things about
youth ministry is the trips that we
get to go on each year. All these
trips serve the purpose of
strengthening their relationships
with Christ. Some are designed for
