Welcome to this new colour glossy editionof Mullavilly News to mark theBicentennary of the Consecration of Mullavilly
Parish Church. As this edition will be more
widely distributed, regular readers will forgive
me for repeating what they may already
know!
The earliest records of a church at Mullavilly
date back to 1736. However, the building and
land were not formally handed over to the
Church of Ireland until 1809. Thus the
consecration was carried out by the Bishop in
1810. This meant that the building and
surrounding land was set aside specifically for
use for holy thingsthings that glorified God.
Over the years, the building has hosted many
occasions that have meant so much to families
in our community. Parents have brought their
children to be baptised, couples have come tobe married and families have gathered to lay
to rest the remains of their loved ones. Every
Sunday, people have come together to
worship and have found blessing and peace.
The Word of God has been proclaimed by His
faithful servants. Prayers have been offered
and answered. Individuals have found solace
in the quietness of the building and have
sought the presence of God in times of need.
The building with its tower, has been a solid
assurance to the community that here, there
is a place where there may find security,
peace and comfort. The Church stands at the
main entrance to the Mullavilly/Laurelvale
community as a symbol of Gods grace and
love to alla reminder of our hope of eternal
life in the future and of the love of God in the
present.
The Church is a legacy of the hope and visionof our ancestors. Originally, the townlands
were under the care of Kilmore Parish Church,
which also encompassed Richhill and the
Dobbin. However, as populations changed and
developed, it was felt that the time was right
to plant a new church at Mullavilly to serve the
townlands of Mullahead, Brackagh,
Unshinagh, Ballyknock, Ballylisk, Tamnavelton
(with the village of Laurelvale), Cordrain,
Tamnamore, Lisaveague, Cornascriebe and, of
course, Mullavilly itself. The faithfulness of
families has meant that this particular
Christian community has continued in its
ministry through 4 centuries of caring for theneedy, encouraging one another in faith, and
teaching the Good News of Jesus, the Son of
God.
This autumn, take time to think of what this
Church means to you. Recall the events, joyful
and sorrowful, which you have attended here,
and take the opportunity to drop in, to join in
worship or wander prayerfully around the
graveyard. May you find the touch of God
upon you as you do.
With every prayerful blessing,Brian

WHAT WE ARE DOING TOCELEBRATE 200 YEARS OF WORSHIP?
Restoring the Clock
The clock has only been with us in Mullavilly
since 1949, when it was moved from a
church in Co Louth. However, it hasnt beentelling the time or striking for a number of
years. Hopefully, by September, this will be
rectified. You will see a restored clock face
telling the right time and you will hear an
hourly strike. The bullet holes seen in thepicture will still remain.

WHATS HAPPENINGIN SEPTEMBER
Bobby cutting his 90th Birthday cake
It was with deep sadness that we
gathered on June 29th for the burial of
Robert (Bobby) Jennett. Aged 93, Bobby
was a very regular worshipper until the
week before his death. He had been
treasurer of the Bowling Club and, as
Churchwarden, he was present at the
opening of the original church hall in
1964. He will be missed and our
sympathy is extended to his widow,
Betty, his children Robert and Caroline
(Taylor) and their families.
On July 2nd, the funeral was held for
James (Jimmy) Robb of Laurel Park.
Jimmy and his wife Edwina (nee Beattie)
moved to Laurel Park from Killyman. We
extend our sympathy to Edwina.
