    ChineseandEnglishLanguageArtsLanguageisfundamentaltolearning,thinkingandcommunicating.CISstudentsuseChineseandEnglishtodevelopdeepunderstandinginallareasoflearningastheyworktomeetthemissionoftheschool.Learningoutcomesinlanguagecanbegroupedintoorallanguage,reading,writing,languagestudyandinquiry.Inadditiontobeingembeddedinotherlearningareas,thereareblocksoftimeintheschooldaydedicatedtobuildingspecificlanguageskillsandknowledge.Thesethreeblocksarereading,writingandlanguagestudy.Inreading,ourgoalsarethatallstudentswilllovetoread,readalotandcontinuallygrowasreaders.CISstudentslearntoreadthroughreadaloudandreadingworkshops.Highqualityreadingmaterialsareusedtoencourageapositiveattitudetowardsreadingforpleasureandforlearning.Studentsreadbooksoftheirchoicethatareatjusttherightreadinglevelforthem.Inwriting,ourgoalsarethatallstudentswilllovetowrite,writealotandcontinuallygrowaswriters.CISstudentslearntowriteinwritingworkshops.Inawritingworkshop,studentslearnthatwritingisalifelongprocessduringwhichtheycontinuallylifttheleveloftheirwritingskillsastheyoutgrowthemselvesaswriters.Studentswriteforauthenticaudiencesandpurposesandhaveownershipoverthetopicsandcontentoftheirwriting.LanguagestudyinChineseincludesaccuratelyformingcharacters,phrasesandsentences()andusingcorrectpunctuation().InEnglish,languagestudyincludesspelling,vocabulary,grammar,andpunctuation(includingcapitalization).Theseareimportantfundamentalblocksinlanguagearts.Languagestudyistaughtsystematicallythroughtheauthenticcontextsofastudentsownreading,writingandspeaking.

    MathematicsThe study of mathematics is a common human activity, increasing in importance in our technological world. A greater proficiency in using mathematics increases opportunities available to individuals. We aim for our students to become confident mathematical thinkers who have a positive attitude toward mathematics and have secure knowledge and skills. Students develop their understanding of number, measurement, algebra, geometry, probability and data to provide a secure foundation on which to build. Students work with appropriate materials, tools and contexts when constructing meaning about new mathematical ideas.
