Pono Home was founded by Scott Cooney in 2014 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Hawaiian value of pono is central to our identity and everything we do. We strive to make the world more pono, for families and for the environment, one home at a time. Making a home pono basically means making it a good host to the people living there, a good neighbor, and a part of a just, fair and equitable community. Join us, and let’s make it happen!

Pono [poh-noh]

A Hawaiian word now incorporated into English vernacular, commonly rendered as righteous and good. Synonyms: just, moral, neighborly, virtuous, fair, right.

Meet Our Company Founder: Eco-Entrepreneur Scott Cooney

Scott Cooney, MS, MBA Founder and CEO

Since 2004, Scott Cooney (M.S., M.B.A.) has been a sustainability educator focusing on helping people help themselves to live better and healthier while reducing their impacts. An Adjunct Professor in the MBA program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Cooney has launched five sustainability education companies including Important Media, one of the top sustainability media companies in the world. He has published two sustainability focused books: Green Living Ideas for Your Pono Home in 2015 and Build a Green Small Business (McGraw-Hill) in 2008. Cooney’s expertise in green business is the foundation of the company, and also led to Pono Home being selected for the 2014 cohort of the highly competitive Energy Excelerator, a Hawaii-based clean tech incubator with a mission to wean Hawaii, and the world, off fossil fuels. Cooney also walks the talk—his utility bills are 1/5th the average in his area, and through this and other green living ideas, he estimates he’s saved well over $100,000 in post-tax income over the last 20 years.

As an educator, Cooney realized that creating an army of sustainability educators that could simply green a home from top to bottom in a one-time service could have a tremendous impact on the environment and shift the global economy toward sustainability. Creating jobs for that army and a financial model to sustain them was the challenge, and Pono Home is the solution.

Press In its first six months in business in Honolulu, Pono Home was featured in the newspaper three times, Hawaii Business magazine, Green magazine, two local morning news shows, and two radio shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

?How much does it cost to become a franchisee? The answer will depend quite a bit on your personal situation. If you need to rent an office or storage space, or if you don’t have a vehicle suitable for work, your costs will be a little higher than someone who has those resources already. Regardless of these factors, Pono Home is one of the most affordable franchises on the market today, and certainly among similar business types, we know no better deal (see the spread on the previous page for more info and a breakdown of costs in our competitive environment).

What experience do I need to have? There is no experience necessary to become a Pono Home franchisee. We look for people who have a positive, can-do attitude, a desire to save the world while making money doing it, and a good work ethic. It may be beneficial to have some baseline understanding of sustainability, of running a business, and general handyman skills, but if you’re willing to learn, these things are all part of Pono Home University®, our training program we provide for all franchisees.

What kind of training will I receive? You will train with an existing Pono Home franchisee to get you up to speed, and your extensive education through our Pono Home University will make you a green home champion in no time! You will also receive continuing education, as well as support and additional training through monthly meetings with the Pono Home Team. There is also an online education curriculum, Pono Home University®, in addition to the in-person training.

Why should I own a Pono Home franchise? By owning a Pono Home franchise, you can be your own boss, secure your future and make a difference, every single day.

Page 17: Pono Home Franchise Kit

Why franchise? Owning a Pono Home franchise is a great opportunity: you will be your own boss and set your own schedule, but yet, you don’t have to invent the wheel. You have a proven model to work from, and a great, supportive team to help you succeed.

Do I need any extra licenses or certifications? This will depend on your local laws. In general, the kind of work we do falls outside the criteria in which plumbing or electrical licenses would be needed.

What kind of support will I receive once I am a franchisee?Once you receive your initial training, you will have continuing support from the home office. You will have access to continuing education with Pono Home University®, you will be able to participate in monthly franchisee calls, and you will have access to our franchisee forum. If you ever have questions about your Pono Home business, we will do our best to get the answers for you.
