The History of Bourne FarmBourne Farm is not a place where importantevents happened or famous people lived; and it isnot a place of outstanding architectural distinction. But it is are survivor of an endangered species, aneighteenth century farm of modest size in an areathat is rapidly being swallowed up by half-acre lotsand condominiums.

The 35.73 acre Bourne Farm fronts on OldMain Road, Rt.28A, in West Falmouth,Massachusetts. It has long been told that BourneFarm was one of the first seven houses in WestFalmouth, although this cannot he documented. Wedo know that Joseph Crowell, born in 1744, who, with his father purchased the lands and pasturesnow known as Bourne Farm, probably erected thehouse around 1775. The property was owned byvarious families through the succeeding years. In1925 Lester Bourne Sr. and his wife EulindaBowman Bourne along with their five childrenbecame the last family to own Bourne Farm.Shortly before Mrs. Bourne's death in 1971, shedeeded Bourne Farm to her five children.

In 1979, Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuaries,Inc. , under the direction of Ermine W. Lovell, founder and president, purchased the farm from theBourne grand-children for $400,000. At the end of1999, Salt Pond purchased 14 acres of land contigu-ous to Bourne Farm from the Sweeney family.Adding this wooded parcel gave Bourne Farm atotal of 49 acres protected for future generations toenjoy.

Today the property is used and appreciatedin many ways by its visitors. The public canenjoy a peaceful stroll by the pond or a quiet walkon a wooded trail. Salt Pond holds its PumpkinDay festival every Columbus Day weekend. Theevent is widely attended by families and childrenof all ages. The property is host to various natureclasses in the summer months. Local artists andphotographers frequently use the property. Also, individuals or organizations can lease BourneFarm for functions, such as weddings, receptions, family reunions and parties. In the near future wewill have the 18th Century Farmhouse availablefor intimate gatherings.
