8:00am Holy Communion

10:30am Parish Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Christ is the King! O friends rejoice;

brothers and sisters, with one voice

tell all the world he is your choice.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

2. O magnify the Lord, and raise

anthems of joy and holy praise

for Christ's brave saints of ancient days.

3. They with a faith for ever new

followed the King, and round him drew

thousands of faithful hearts and true.

4. O Christian women, Christian men,

all the world over, seek again

the Way disciples followed then.

5. Christ through all ages is the same:

place the same hope in his great name,

with the same faith his word proclaim.

6. Let love's unconquerable might

your scattered companies unite

in service to the Lord of light.

7. So shall God's will on earth be done,

new lamps be lit, new tasks begun,

and the whole church at last be one.

Words: George Kennedy Allen Bell (1883-1958)

Music: Vulpius (Gelobt Sei Gott), Melody from Melchior Vulpius’s Gesangbuch, 1609

(Ancient & Modern – 486)

Collect

Eternal Father,

whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven

that he might rule over all things as Lord and King:

keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit

and in the bond of peace,

and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet;

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Daniel 7.9-10,13-14*

As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne; his clothing

was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and

its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A

thousand thousand served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him.

The court sat in judgement, and the books were opened. As I watched in the night visions, I

saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient

One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship,

that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting

dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed.

Second Reading – Revelation 1.4b-8

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from

the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness,

the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us

and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his

God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Look! He is

coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his

account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. ‘I am the Alpha and the

Omega’, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Gradual Hymn*

1. The head that once was crowned with thorns

is crowned with glory now:

a royal diadem adorns

the mighty Victor's brow.

2. The highest place that heaven affords

is his, is his by right,

the King of kings, and Lord of lords,

and heaven's eternal Light;

3. The joy all of all who dwell above,

the joy of all below,

to whom he manifests his love,

and grants his name to know.

4. To them the cross, with all its shame,

with all its grace, is given;

their name, an everlasting name,

their joy, the joy of heaven.

5. They suffer with their Lord below,

they reign with him above;

their profit and their joy to know

the mystery of his love.

6. The cross he bore is life and health,

though shame and death to him;

his people's hope, his people's wealth,

their everlasting theme.

Words: Thomas Kelly (1768-1855)

Music: St Magnus, melody by Jeremiah Clarke (c1673-1707) in Playford’s The Divine Companion 1709,

harmonised by William Henry Monk (1823-1889) (Ancient & Modern – 232)

Gospel – John 18.33-37

Pilate asked Jesus, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?’ Pilate replied, ‘I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?’ Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.’ Pilate asked him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’

Offertory Hymn*

1. At the name of Jesus

every knee shall bow,

every tongue confess him

King of glory now:

‘tis the Father’s pleasure

we should call him Lord,

who from the beginning

was the mighty Word.

2. At his voice creation

sprang at once to sight,

all the angel faces,

all the hosts of light,

thrones and dominations,

stars upon their way,

all the heavenly orders,

in their great array.

3. Humbled for a season,

to receive a name

from the lips of sinners

unto whom he came,

faithfully he bore it

spotless to the last,

brought it back victorious,

when from death he passed:

4. Bore it up triumphant

with its human light,

through all ranks of creatures,

to the central height,

to the throne of Godhead,

to the Father’s breast;

filled it with the glory,

of that perfect rest.

5. Name him, Christians, name Him,

with love strong as death,

but with awe and wonder

and with bated breath:

he is God the Saviour,

he is Christ the Lord,

ever to be worshipped,

trusted and adored.

6. In your hearts enthrone him;

there let him subdue

all that is not holy,

all that is not true:

crown Him as your Captain

in temptation’s hour;

let his will enfold you

in its light and power.

Page 6: Pewsheet - 22 November 2015 (Oakham)

6

7. Surely, this Lord Jesus

shall return again,

with his Father’s glory,

with his angel train;

for all wreaths of empire

meet upon his brow,

and our hearts confess him

King of glory now.

Words: Caroline Maria Noel (1817-1877)

Music: Evelyns, William Henry Monk (1823-1889)

(Ancient & Modern – 593)

Communion Anthem*

King of all ages, throned on high,

yet saviour too of those with faith,

death at your onslaught died in fear

and grace triumphant rules supreme.

Risen from death, the heavenly Christ

receives from God the Father’s hand.

Power over all created things:

a gift he could not know on earth.

Then at your coming on the clouds

with shining strength to be our judge,

cancel the debt we owe you still,

give back the glory we have lost.

Glory to you, O Christ our Lord,

exalted far beyond our sight,

reigning in bliss for evermore,

with Father and with Paraclete. Amen.

Words: 10th century Latin, trans Mount Saint Bernard Abbey

Music: Paul Isom (b 1959)

Communion Hymn*

1. All heaven declares the glory of the risen Lord.

Who can compare with the beauty of the Lord?

Forever he will be the Lamb upon the throne;

I gladly bow the knee and worship him alone.

2. I will proclaim the glory of the risen Lord,

who once was slain to reconcile the world to God.

Forever you will be the Lamb upon the throne.

I gladly bow the knee and worship you alone.

Words & Music: Noel Richards (b 1955) and Tricia Richards (b 1960) © 1987 Thankyou Music (Ancient & Modern – 193)

Post Communion Prayer

Stir up, O Lord,

the wills of your faithful people;

that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works,

may by you be plenteously rewarded;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn*

1. Christ triumphant, ever reigning,

Saviour, Master, King!

Lord of heaven, our lives sustaining,

hear us as we sing:

Yours the glory and the crown,

the high renown, the eternal name!

2. Word incarnate, truth revealing,

Son of Man on earth!

Power and majesty concealing

by your humble birth:

3. Suffering servant, scorned, ill-treated,

victim crucified!

death is through the cross defeated,

sinners justified:

4. Priestly King, enthroned for ever

high in heaven above!

sin and death and hell shall never

stifle hymns of love:

5. So, our hearts and voices raising

through the ages long.

ceaselessly upon you gazing,

this shall be our song:

Words: Michael Saward (b 1932)

Donations for the

Refugee Crisis

The images of desperate refugees

crossing the Mediterranean in

unstable boats, or packed illegally into

lorries, or protesting ‘We are human

beings too’ in the port of Calais, are a

distressing reminder of the shocking

refugee crisis that led to the founding

of Christian Aid in 1945. Christian Aid

is working with churches and other

agencies in supporting humanitarian
