8:00am Holy Communion*
10:30am Parish Communion
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, be all else but naught to me, save that thou art;
be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light.
2. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word,
be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord; be thou my great Father, and I thy true son;
be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.
3. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight; be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might;
be thou my soul’s shelter, be thou my strong tower: O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power.
4. Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise:
be thou mine inheritance now and always; be thou and thou only the first in my heart,
O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art.
5. High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after victory is won;
great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.
Words: Irish (c 8th century), tr Mary Elizabeth Byrne (1880-1931), versified Eleanor Henrietta Hull (1860-1935)
Music: Slane, Irish traditional melody, harm Erik Routley (1917-1982) (Ancient & Modern – 595)
Collect
Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all:
govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations,
divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule;
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
4
First Reading – Amos 5.18-24*
Alas for you who desire the day of the LORD! Why do you want the day of the LORD? It is darkness, not light; as if someone fled from a lion, and was met by a bear; or went into the
house and rested a hand against the wall, and was bitten by a snake. Is not the day of the LORD darkness, not light, and gloom with no brightness in it? I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take
no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt-offerings and grain-offerings, I will not accept them; and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals I will not
look upon. Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
Second Reading – 1 Thessalonians 4.13-18
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died
and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the
coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will
descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we
will be with the Lord for ever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Gradual Hymn*
1. Hark, what a sound, and too divine for hearing,
stirs on the earth and trembles in the air! Is it the thunder of the Lord’s appearing?
Is it the music of his people’s prayer?
2. Surely he cometh, and a thousand voices shout to the saints, and to the deaf are dumb;
surely he cometh, and the earth rejoices, glad in his coming who hath sworn: I come!
3. This hath he done, and shall we not adore him?
This shall he do, and can we still despair? come, let us quickly fling ourselves before him,
cast at his feet the burden of our care.
4. Through life and death, through sorrow and through sinning, he shall suffice me, for he hath sufficed:
Christ is the end, for Christ was the beginning, Christ the beginning, for the end is Christ.
Words: Frederic William Henry Myers (1843-1901) Music: Highwood, Richard Runciman Terry (1865-1938) (A&M – 37)

Gospel – Matthew 25.1-13
Jesus spoke this parable to the disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish,
and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became
drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, “Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.” Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish
said to the wise, “Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” But the wise replied, “No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy
some for yourselves.” And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other
bridesmaids came also, saying, “Lord, lord, open to us.” But he replied, “Truly I tell you, I do not know you.” Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.’
Offertory Hymn*
1. Thy hand, O God, has guided
thy flock, from age to age; the wondrous tale is written,
full clear, on every page; our fathers owned thy goodness,
and we their deeds record; and both of this bear witness:
one Church, one faith, one Lord.
2. Thy heralds brought glad tidings to greatest, as to least;
they bade men rise, and hasten to share the great King's feast;
and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word,
to all alike proclaiming one Church, one faith, one Lord.
3. When shadows thick were falling,
and all seemed sunk in night, thou, Lord, didst send thy servants,
thy chosen sons of light. On them and on thy people
thy plenteous grace was poured, and this was still their message:
one Church, one faith, one Lord.
4. Through many a day of darkness,
through many a scene of strife, the faithful few fought bravely,
to guard the nation's life. Their Gospel of redemption,
sin pardoned, man restored, was all in this enfolded:
one Church, one faith, one Lord.
5. And we, shall we be faithless? Shall hearts fail, hands hang down?
Shall we evade the conflict, And cast away our crown?
Not so: in God’s deep counsels some better thing is stored;
we will maintain, unflinching, one Church, one faith, one Lord.
6. Thy mercy will not fail us,
nor leave thy work undone; with thy right hand to help us,
the victory shall be won; and then, by men and angels,
thy name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem:
one Church, one faith, one Lord.
Words: Edward Hayes Plumptre (1821-1891) Music: Thornbury, Basil Harwood (1859-1949) (Ancient & Modern – 814)

Communion Anthem*
We will remember them, we will remember them. At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them, we will remember them. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them, we will remember them.
Words: Ode to Remembrance, from For the Fallen, Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) Music: Peter Thompson
Communion Hymn*
1. Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people; light for the world to see.
Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today.
2. Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has power to save us. Make us your living voice.
3. Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed.
4. Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone.
5. Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong. Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.
Words: Bernadette Farrell (b 1957) Music: Christ Be Our Light, Bernadette Farrell (b 1957)
© 1993 Bernadette Farrell/OCP Publications (Ancient & Modern – 42)
Post Communion Prayer
God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom
and restored the broken to wholeness of life: look with compassion on the anguish of the world,
and by your healing power make whole both people and nations; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
7
Final Hymn*
1. Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesu, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.
2. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy grace receive;
suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.
3. Finish then thy new creation:
pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation,
perfectly restored in thee; Changed from glory into glory
till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.
Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Blaenwern, William Penfro Rowlands (1860-1937)
(Ancient & Modern – 721)

G A Macfarren
1 God standeth in the congre- | gation ∙ of | prin- || ces :
| he is ∙ a | Judge a-mong | gods. 2 How long will ye give | wrong — | judgement :
and accept the | per-sons | of the ∙ un- | godly? 3 Defend the | poor and | fatherless :
see that such as are in | need ∙ and ne- | cessity ∙ have | right. 4 Deliver the | outcast ∙ and | poor :
save them | from the | hand of the ∙ un- | godly. 5 They will not be learn’d nor understand,
but walk on | still in | darkness : all the foundations of the | earth are | out of | course.
6 I have said, | Ye are | gods : and ye are all the | children ∙ of the | most — | Highest.
7 But ye shall | die like | men : and | fall like | one of ∙ the | princes. 8 Arise O God and | judge thou ∙ the | earth :
