THE CONFEDERATE MONUMENTr

The monument is in position It is24 feet in height from the founda ¬

tion to the statue that surmounts thegranite shaft and presents a most in ¬

spiring picture The monument facessouthwest On the side to the southand east are these remarkable wordsThe South rteveres her Washington

Jefferson Madison Monroe AndrewJackson and others who laid thefoundation of our grand republic Shehonors her Lee Stonewall JacksonStewart Johnson Forrest and everybrave son who fought to preserve ourliberties guaranteed by the fathersunder the constitution Underneath-this inscription is the word Confed-eracy

blazoned with the Confederate flagthe folds of which display the elevenstars Over the flags are the dates1S611865 which are volumes of his-tory On the west end of the panelcontaining the flag are inscribed thesewords

On the northeast pannel are twoflage crossed and over them the dates1S611865 On the northwest side aresculptured two muskets crossed

The monoleith is crowned with afine statue of a Confederate soldierwith his musket resting on the groundand his hands clasping the muzzle ofthe gun

It is needless here to speak of thedevotion zeal and love shown by theOcala Daughters in their labor oflove to gather funds to erect thismonument to the heroic loyalty of thesons who laid down their preciouslives that the principles for which theyfought might live This touching andpathetic story will be eloquently andthrillingly told April 25th when themonument will be dedicated with ap ¬

propriate ceremonies
