Ronald Reagan’s presidency…

“Reaganomics”

The four pillars of Reagan's economic policy were to: reduce the growth of government spending, reduce tax rates on income from labor and capital, reduce government regulation of the economy, control the money supply to reduce inflation.

"Trickle-down economics" policies are perceived to benefit the wealthy and then

"trickle-down" to the middle & lower classes.

The Effects of “Trickle-Down” Economics

The “Rust Belt” The Rust Belt, aka the

Manufacturing Belt, is an area in parts of the Northeastern U.S., Mid-Atlantic States, and portions of the Upper Midwest.

Economic activity in the Manufacturing Belt forms a significant part of the heavy industry & manufacturing sectors of the U.S. economy.

Fewer manufacturing jobs has left many cities in this region economically depressed.

The Rust Belt has also had a population decrease.

George H.W. Bush

Serving from 1989 - 1993, Bush succeeded Reagan and became the 41st President.

Foreign policy drove the Bush presidency; operations were conducted in Panama and the Persian Gulf at a time of world change; the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 and the Soviet Union dissolved two years later.

Domestically, Bush reneged on a 1988 campaign promise and raised taxes amidst a struggle with Congress. In the wake of economic concerns, he lost the 1992 presidential election to Democrat Bill Clinton.

President Bush visited U.S.

troops in Saudi Arabia on

Thanksgiving Day, 1990.

Persian Gulf War, 1990-91 The Gulf War or Persian

Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991) was a conflict between Iraq and a coalition force from 34 nations authorized by the United Nations (UN) and led primarily by the U.S. in order to return Kuwait to the control of the Emir.

Saddam Hussein accused Kuwait of stealing its oil by slant drilling.

The Iraqis were defeated, but Saddam was left in control.

Bill Clinton William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton was the

42nd President, serving from 1993 - 2001. He was the third-youngest President, older only than Theodore Roosevelt and JFK.

He became President at the end of the Cold War, and as he was born in the period after WWII, is known as the first Baby Boomer president.

His policies, on issues such as the North American Free Trade Agreement and welfare reform, are described as "centrist.“

Clinton left office with an approval rating at 65%, the highest end of office rating since WWII. Since leaving office, he has been involved in public speaking and humanitarian work. To promote and address international causes, such as treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS and global warming.

The impeachment trial of PresidentBill Clinton in 1999, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist presiding.

The U.S. Senate acquitted Clinton.

Bush vs. Gore (2000) The landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision

that effectively resolved the 2000 presidential election in favor of George W. Bush.

Florida's votes gave Bush, the Republican candidate, 271 electoral votes, one more than the required 270 electoral votes to win the Electoral College and defeat Democratic candidate Al Gore, who received 266 electoral votes.

Highly controversial, the decision itself stated it could never be cited as precedent, causing critics to accuse the conservative majority of simply picking a winner rather than relying on sound jurisprudence.

A recount after Bush had determined that Gore might have won under certain types of recounts, but not under the type being used at the time Bush v. Gore was decided.

After the attacks on September 11, 2001, to overthrow the Taliban, destroy Al-Qaeda, and to capture Osama bin Laden, Bush ordered an invasion of Afghanistan and announced in October 2001 a global War on Terrorism.

Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002.

In March 2003, Bush asserted Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction and ordered the invasion of Iraq. On May 1, 2003, Bush gave the Mission Accomplished speech, proclaiming, "in the battle of Iraq, the U.S. and our allies have prevailed.“

Bush gave tax cuts for the wealthy, weakened environmental protections, took away civil rights, and created an energy plan full of oil industry handouts.

The Iraq WarWe invaded because: Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass

Destruction (nuclear, chemical, biological). Saddam Hussein was a threat to the U.S. Saddam was a threat to his own people.

Because of faulty, manipulated information, and the rush to get terrorists, we invaded Iraq…

Unfortunately, the reasons were wrong and unjustified!
