3D face

Motorola adds 3D face toits portfolioMotorola is to add three-dimensional facialrecognition to its portfolio of identitymanagement solutions. The deal gives thecompany an additional string in its bowwhen it comes to vying for projectsinvolving ePassports or national ID cards, which are increasingly specifying multiplebiometrics, such as facial recognition andfingerprint technology.

The 3D technology will be provided byA4Vision, who has signed an OEM agreementwith Motorola to provide its patent pending2D/3D ICAO compliant camera and 3D facialrecognition software.

The biometric technology will be usedwithin Motorola’s Identity Management andSecurity Solutions Portfolio, which is adocument management and biometricsidentification system for enrolment andissuance of secure national ID cards andpassport documents.

Motorola says that its solution will be able tocreate ICAO-compliant machine readabletravel documents with fingerprint and facialbiometric data stored directly on thedocuments, enabling more accurate userauthentication at various checkpoints, borders, and other points of entry.

Darrin Reilly, general manager of Motorola’sBiometrics Unit, commented: “A4Vision’s 3Dfacial technology and cameras combined withface/finger fusion contribute to Motorola’sportfolio as one of the most accurate in theindustry.”

The link up does not come as a completesurprise. Motorola is one of the many companiesthat financially backs A4 Vision, so it makessense that it would take advantage of thebiometric companies’ products. Other backers ofA4 Vision include:

• Menlo Ventures• MyQube• Logitech• Tako Ventures• NTT Leasing Co. Ltd.• Singapore Technologies• Sunrise Capital• Hanna Ventures.
