The deal gives the company an additional string in its bow when it comes to vying for projects involving ePassports or national ID cards, which are increasingly specifying multiple biometrics, such as facial recognition and fingerprint technology. The 3D technology will be provided by A4Vision, who has signed an OEM agreement with Motorola to provide its patent pending 2D/3D ICAO compliant camera and 3D facial recognition software. The biometric technology will be used within Motorola’s Identity Management and Security Solutions Portfolio, which is a document management and biometrics identification system for enrolment and issuance of secure national ID cards and passport documents. Motorola says that its solution will be able to create ICAO-compliant machine readable travel documents with fingerprint and facial biometric data stored directly on the documents, enabling more accurate user authentication at various checkpoints, borders, and other points of entry. Darrin Reilly, general manager of Motorola’s Biometrics Unit, commented: “A4Vision’s 3D facial technology and cameras combined with face/finger fusion contribute to Motorola’s portfolio as one of the most accurate in the industry.” The link up does not come as a complete surprise.
