Welcome to the Memphis JCC!Shalom!
I am honored and humbled to be writing to the MJCC membership as the incoming President. I am following in the footsteps of so many dedicated individuals who have and do inspire me to serve our JCC well over the next two years. I would like to thank Kara Bierman for her service to the Memphis Jewish Community Center. She spent the past two years as Presi-dent working tirelessly on behalf of this organization and our community.
As I reflect on our past achievements and leadership, I cannot help but look to the future as well. I am so excited by the amazing new additions to our staff team—Jeremy Weiser, our new Program Director; Anthony Slayen, our new General Manager for Wellness, Recreation and Member Services; Sophie Samuels, the new Camping, Youth and Family Services Director; and Amy Israel, who we welcome back to the MJCC staff and family as our Cultural Arts/Judaic Enrichment Director. These talented professionals will be working side by side with our team of existing staff to continue to enrich and enhance life in Jewish Memphis. I am confident that while individually they are outstanding, as a complete team they are truly exceptional!
With this team of dedicated professionals working hard each day in partnership with our Board and many committee volunteers, the Memphis Jewish Community Center is reenergized. I am looking forward with plans to thoroughly evaluate and enhance our existing programming, create new programs in the arts and Jewish culture, and provide greater opportunities for community-wide special events. We are committed to reaching out to those not currently affiliated with the MJCC, collaborating with appropriate partners throughout the Jewish and general communities to enhance our programming, and to further identifying areas for program growth and development.
The Board of Directors of the Memphis Jewish Community Center adopted the following vision statement to guide us as we move forward over the next year or so:
The Memphis Jewish Community Center will function as the center of Jewish life in Memphis with a goal of retaining existing members and engaging new, unaffiliated and past members. This will be accomplished through dynamic and creative programming for all ages with a strong emphasis on Judaic content; excellence in customer service; a focus on community building and inclusive engagement; impeccable facilities; superior fiscal management; and transparency in operations and governance.
I am excited to be leading the MJCC as we put the pieces of this working vision statement into action and I invite you to find a way to become more involved. Whether you try a new program or event, spend more time in the fitness center, take advantage of our core programming offered for all ages, volunteer on a committee or with a specific program, or just spend more time enjoying your Memphis Jewish Community Center, we are thankful for your continued support and membership and glad that you are a part of the MJCC family!
Sincerely,
Craig Weiss

FREE!Why all the Buzz about Meditation?Daniel Lamontagne has helped thousands of students to understand what meditation is all about. There are a lot of misconceptions about meditation. He will help you explore the many aspects of meditation that create openings for healing. In this one time FREE class, Daniel will explore the concepts of meditation with the group.Session 1Wed 7:00-8:00pm | 4/3
Session 2Thurs 11:30am-12:30pm | 4/4____________________________________________________
NEW!Breath WorkDuring the workshop, Daniel discusses that only 15% of our thoughts are conscious while 85% are unconscious. The unconscious thoughts (old core beliefs) will run our world if the thoughts are not brought to the light for healing. One way to quickly bring unconscious thoughts up is through his precise breathing pattern. The participants listen to a CD and follow a smoothly connected breathing pattern for 40 minutes which brings up energy called prana, chi, ki, or the life force into the body where it dissolves and surfaces anything that is unlike itself. When this takes place, blockages that have been holding the student back at the psychological, spiritual, or cellular source surface and a deep inner transformation occurs. Ages 16 and older.Sun 1:00-3:00pm | 4/28 | $25m/$35nm | 17623103____________________________________________________
NEW!Healing MeditationIn Daniel Lamontagne’s workshops, attendees will work on deepening their meditation and connecting with their inner selves through the divine energies of the heart. They will also explore the practical usage of subtle energies in healing the self and others, sensing, and awakening intuition, and meditation in movement. Ages 16 and older.Session 1Mon 7:00-8:30pm | 4/8-5/27 | $135m/$145nm | 17623101

wellness
Over the past 10 years, there has been a shift toward making personal training more functional. The revolution began with physical therapists and then functional training was slowly adopted by coaches and personal trainers. The key to developing a truly functional training (FT) program is not to go too far in any particular direction. Functional training should be done standing and should be multi-joint. Function varies from joint to joint. Exercises that promote the function of joints that require stabilization are different from exercises that promote the function of joints that strive for mobility. FT for those muscles involves training them to be better stabilizers, often by performing simple exercises through small ranges of motion.
The three key groups in need of stability training are:1. the deep abdominals 2. the hip abductors and rotators3. the scapula stabilizers
Function at the ankle, knee, and hip is occurs best when the hip displays stability. For some the development of stability at the hip may initially require isolated work to properly “turn on,” or activate, the muscle. At certain times, certain muscle groups--notably the abdominals, hip abductors and scapula stabilizers--need to be isolated to improve their function. For this reason, some single-joint, apparently nonfunctional exercises may in fact improve function of the entire lower extremity. Function at the shoulder joint is enhanced by improving the function of the scapula stabilizers. We frequently employ exercises to work on the scapula stabilizers that might appear nonfunctional, but the development of these areas is critical to long-term health of the shoulder joint. Improving abdominal strength to aid in the stabilization of the lower back isn’t new, but the specific methods are changing rapidly. To improve the function of the lumbar spine, a certain degree of isolation is necessary, and this isolation involves simple, short-range contractions of the deep abdominal muscles. As you begin to explore the concept of functional training, keep an open mind about how and why you move in any particular activity.
What does this mean for you?At the Memphis Jewish Community Center, we have several ways that you can add FT into your everyday workout routine. The key is to design a training program that truly prepares you for your activities. The preferred method is to first learn how your workout will fits into your everyday life and what will help you to perform better. Think of your training as a vehicle to improve performance, not just to improve strength. We offer functional training specialty classes such as Pilates Reformer and TRX that are led by certified instructors that use FT. We also offer Free Group Exercise classes such as “Sculpt Xpress” and “Strength Super Set” that will help you target your functional fitness. If you are unsure of how to apply functional training to your existing routine please stop by and let a member of our wellness staff help you!

Sophie SamuelsCamp, Youth and Family Services Director
The MJCC is thrilled to introduce our new Director of Camp, Youth and Family Services, Sophie Samuels. Sophie is no stranger to the MJCC as she has grown up in Memphis and at the MJCC. Sophie explains,”The MJCC has been like a second home to me and I cannot think of a better place to share my passion for summer camp and working with kids.” Sophie was a counselor at MJCC Day Camp and even served as the Assistant Camp Director at the MJCC in 2009. Sophie most recently served as the Program Assistant at the Exceptional Foundation of West TN where she worked with kids with special needs, led daily field trips, and planned and executed art activities. Prior to that position, Sophie was the Director of Educational Outreach at Temple Israel for two years where she oversaw the administration of the religious school and youth groups as well as planned and executed all family programming. As part of her work at Temple, Sophie spent the last two summers as a Unit Head at Henry S. Jacobs Camp, the Union of Reform Judaism overnight camp in Utica, MS. She has a B.S. in Child Studies from Vanderbilt University where she minored in Studio Art and Judaic Studies. Summer 2013 at the MJCC is fast approaching and Sophie has jumped in head first to ensure that this is the best summer yet at the MJCC. Sophie adds, “Summer 2013 is sure to be filled with excitement, lots of fun and happy campers.” She is working vigorously to hire the most qualified staff that will make MJCC Summer Camp the place to be this summer. On your next visit to the Center, please stop by and introduce yourself to Sophie!
