Social Networking 101by Cheri Hottinger
As I write this, I have just returned home from the last session of a three-part class of Social Networking 101 at C-TEC. Last fall I at-tended a client visit with Journal Communications, producer of our Images of Licking County magazine, where they piqued my interest in social networking, telling me that the average age on Facebook was somewhere between 35 and 42. When I returned from that trip, I began my search for an instructor who could teach our members (and me) how to use social networking in their businesses. I was referred to Angela Siefer with Shiny Door on LinkedIn and hooked her up with C-TEC to teach Social Networking 101 and 201 classes.
If you did not attend, you really missed a lot of good information about LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Our instructor went over the basics of LinkedIn and how to expand your net-work. The Chamber has four groups on LinkedIn: Licking County Chamber, Community Capitalism, Community Leadership of Licking County and Workenomics. Not all of them are active, which gives me some homework to do. I do believe that having a presence on LinkedIn is important. Keep in mind, that all of these sites are FREE, so you are only out your time. By using LinkedIn, you will be able to promote your business and events, expand your network and read and submit questions, news articles and business information. You can fi nd my personal profi le at www.linkedin.com/in/cherihottinger.
We then covered the foundation of Facebook. I have to be honest, until tonight, I was under the impression that Facebook is mostly for personal use, but I was wrong. We covered the subject of having “pages” on Facebook for business use. In addition to my personal profi le, I have started to create a page for the Chamber that I hope to launch in a few weeks.
And then there’s Twitter. I am still somewhat confused by Twitter, but am trying to fi nd good uses for it. Angela said she has had great success with her company on Twitter, so I think there is value in using it; I’m just not at that level yet. Angela explained that Twitter is like at-tending a party or social gathering and going in and out of conversations.
Bottom line is that you need to be involved in the online promotion of your company and its services or products. It is the wave of the future. In today’s world, if you don’t have a website, or have one that has outdated information on it, you could be driving potential cus-tomers to your competitors. It is time for you to venture out and see how your company can utilize these sites. You may be shocked to fi nd out that they really aren’t that hard or scary to use and will make you wonder why it took so long to try them. I am certainly not an expert in this fi eld, but would be happy to talk with you about this exciting topic. Just give me a call at 740.345.9757 ext. 5.

ServiceMaster and Owens Tech Center achieve National GS-42 Certification by Green Sealtm
ServiceMaster Facility Services by George and Owens Science and Tech-nology, LLC announced they have achieved the GS-42 certifi cation for their cleaning services. Both ServiceMaster and Owens associates worked closely with Green Seal, a respected environmental leadership ecolable to attain this certifi cation. Directories Are On Their WayThe 2009 Membership Directory is on its way to you. You should notice that each year the Directory gets thicker. In 2005, it contained 79 pages; the 2009 Directory has 117. Thank you for being part of the Chamber and for making the Directory grow each year.
Our member survey focused on the Membership Directory this month. We wanted to fi nd out how often you use the Directory and what your thoughts were on the possibility of making it an on-line Directory. Here are the results:
When asked how often you use the Directory, you said: A Few Times A Year 46.2% Never 20.4% Once A Month 19.4% Once A Week 11.8% Every Day 2.2%
You told us that given the choice, 70% of you would prefer to view the Membership Directory on-line with links to websites, email addresses and advertisers versus the
existing book format.
We are always looking for ways to support our members and your opinions are important to us. This information will be very helpful in planning for the 2010. Directory. Thanks to those who took part in this month’s survey.

The Buckeye Co-Works A new pattern for working...Newark, OH - Wipikedia defi nes co-working as the social gathering of a group of people, who are still working independently, but who share values and who are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with talented people in the same space. The Buckeye Co-Works has adopted that philosophy with the opening of their co-working facility this May. The Buckeye Co-Works is located at 951 Buckeye Avenue in Newark.
Owner, Gary Krinn says “the idea of co-working is somewhat new. There is a growing need among professionals who normally work out of a home offi ce to have a space to meet clients and bounce ideas off of other professionals.” He hopes to meet their needs by offering both shared desk space and private offi ces for rent. The facility offers secure internet, private lockers, print/fax/scan ser-vices, mail collection service, and free parking. “It’s an inexpensive way to rent a meeting or offi ce space for an hour, day, week or more.” said Gary.
For more information, call The Buckeye Co-Works at 740/973-1991 or log onto their website to book your space, www.thebuckeyecoworks.com.
