One of my all-time favorite things to do in Licking County is spend time on the 40+ miles of
recreational trails. I am an avid cyclist and I enjoy the convenience and scenic
nature of the multi-use trail system so close to home.
Welcome to Licking County!I use the term “It’s a good tIme to be us” pretty frequently when I am out talking with folks about the great things that have happened and are happening in our county. It’s a phrase that I feel really sums up the mo-mentum that is driving Licking County forward into a bright future. As a community, we are taking stock of our assets and, to be honest, there are many. There is a newfound spirit of revitalization happening here and we are excited for you to be a part of our ongoing journey.
Community leaders in Newark have found a way to reimagine the courthouse square and are actively moving forward with plans to make our county seat a destination complete with entertainment venues, loft housing and great retail, food and beverage outlets. The Buckeye Lake region is rethinking how it will transform into a premier summer destination that is safe, fun and solid for generations to come. Granville has taken a page from the reinvestment playbook and staked its claim up and down Broadway, proving once again that the Village is the best of the best in the Midwest.
Great things are happening here and I couldn’t be happier that you are choosing to be one of “us,” if only for a short while.
Best wishes for a safe journey,
Dan ModerExecutive DirectorExplore Licking County

Courthouse Square Looking back…and forward
Licking County Courthouse
With its soaring clock toWer and im-
pressive limestone exterior, the Lick-
ing County Courthouse is a point of
pride and beauty in the city of Newark.
The courthouse, which sits on a foun-
dation of sandstone in Newark’s public
square, was built in 1878 after its pre-
decessor was lost to a fire. Designed
by Cleveland architect H.E. Myer, the
courthouse beautifully displays design
elements that were in vogue through-
out the Second French Empire.
Today, the courthouse is home to
the Licking County Court of Com-
mon Pleas as well as the juvenile and
probate divisions. A $4 million reno-
vation, which is expected to be com-
pleted in 2017, will help preserve the
courthouse’s exterior and replace its
roof, elevator and about 100 windows
while introducing a new skylight.
The Licking County Courthouse
earned a spot on the National Register
of Historic Places in 1973.

Canal Market District
DoWntoWn neWark’s reputation as the city’s thriving center will
only continue to grow as the south side undergoes a dramatic
transformation into a multi-use, open-air market. Bordered by
Canal Market, Second and Third streets, the Canal Market Plaza
will serve as the new district’s centerpiece and prime spot for small
concerts, weddings and similar gatherings. Revamped downtown
parking and green space will also be introduced to the historic city
center, transforming it into a destination for out-of-towners.
The multi-million dollar renovation is slated for completion by
spring 2016.
Louis Sullivan BuildingIn the early 1900s, famed Chicago architect Louis Sullivan brought some of his big city flair to Newark. One of his renowned “jewel box” banks was built on North Third Street. The father of skyscrapers designed only eight similar structures for the Midwest region. Discussions on how to preserve and use the historic building, just over a century old, are under way.
Old Licking County JailCompleted in 1889, this three-story sandstone building is actually Licking County’s fourth jail. The jail, which closed in 1987 and has since been used as a records center, recently opened its doors to tourists. The Old Licking County Jail has been the subject of several television spe-cials, including an episode of the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures.
Did you know?
The first jail was established in 1808, and was lost in a fire with the original courthouse in 1815. The second was repurposed
into a stable.

Wine & Dine
From mainstream establishments to a “mom and pop” that’s been in the
family for generations, Newark’s dining scene is sure to appeal to everyone’s
taste buds. Love an old-fashioned tavern, or something a bit more
cosmopolitan? You won’t have to choose. If you favor locally-made drinks,
Licking County’s breweries and wineries are sure to pique your interest.

Davis-Shai House has a rich history
at the center of the City of Heath’s

in 1861 in the Gothic Revival style,
the Davis-Shai House was originally
located near the Ohio and Erie Canal.
In 1945, local dentist Dr. Joseph Park
Shai, Sr. purchased the estate in 1945
via a sheriff sale.
The Shai family renovated the home
and added a kitchen, family room
and garage. In 1995, the family sold
the property and donated the home

it to Central Parkway.
The house saw additional renovations
under the ownership of the city, and the efforts didn’t go unacknowledged.
In 2002, the house was honored with the Downtown Ohio Inc., Heritage
OHIO Preservation and Revitalization Award.
After undergoing a $1.6 million expansion in 2009, the facility reopened

Buckeye Lake: A History
many knoW buckeye lake as a local vacation destination and
the region’s go-to spot for swimming and boating. But the
lake has quite a history – as you can imagine, with it being
Ohio’s first state park.
Known as “The Big
Swamp” to Native
Americans, the land was
first explored by colonial
settlers in 1747 as they
looked to areas west of
the established colonies. In the early
1800s, a canal system, which worked to
transport goods throughout the growing area, was developed. And around
1820, an early pioneer built a log cabin on the north shore of the lake, lay-
ing the foundation for what the region is today – and what still lies ahead.
Although the Buckeye Lake experience was set back in 2015
when it became necessary to act on problems surrounding
its dam, the state’s plan of attack is expected to revitalize
Buckeye Lake and make it even more of a destination than
it was before.
The onsite Buckeye Lake Museum contains much of the
area’s rich history. Visitors can find more than 1,000
artifacts, including some from the Buckeye Lake Amusement
Park. The museum has hosted more than 17,000 visitors

Rides, games, food and entertainment. This will be the 70th year that the Firefight-ers Association has operated the Street Fair. The Association was originally the volunteer organization that operated the Pataskala Fire Department. Since the establishment of the West Licking Joint Fire District in the 1980s, the association has evolved into a support group for the District. Funds from the Fair have been used to purchase special-ized equipment and other items that the District wanted but did not have the funds for. Our members come from the commu-nity. We now operate a Support Services Unit throughout Licking County, which is a mobile Rehab Unit that is taken to emergen-cy scenes to provide shelter, beverages, snacks and rest area for the responders.
