ThePowerto make a
DifferenceEnvironmental stewardship, innovation and leadership
are becoming increasingly important as we take steps
to create a sustainable environment for future generations
by going green. This is particularly important when it comes
to construction of new buildings or major renovations of
older ones. To this end, Eaton Corporation offers a broad
range of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly
electrical solutions that can help a building go green
and qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) credits through the U.S. Green BuildingsCouncil (USGBC).

EA Prerequisite 2: Incorporating use of creative controls such as occupancy sensors, timers and daylight harvesting systems wiassist in reducing building energy consumption.
EA Credit 1: Using task and ambient lighting control strategies will enable building occupants to adjust lighting levels to meettheir task needs as well as personal preferences and will reduce lighting energy consumption by 10%30%.
Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS)
EA Prerequisite 2: High efficiency of 95% reduces total energy losses by more than 50% when compared with traditional UPSs.EA Credit 1: Eaton BladeUPS go even further with a rating upwards of 97% efficiency, further minimizing energy usage.
Variable Frequency Drives
EA Prerequisite 2: Incorporating use of variable frequency drives on HVAC system components such as fans and pump motorsprovides for significantly improved efficiency, energy savings and optimization. The energy savings can be dramatic. For example, the speed of a centrifugal fan reduced by only 1/3 will save more than 70% in energy consumption.
EA Credit 1: Frequency drives adjust a motors speed to closely match output requirements, resulting in typical energy savings o10%50%. Soft-start motor controls lower the demands on a motor during startup, conserving energy and extending the life of themechanical system.
Power Factor Correction Capacitors and Filters
Power factor correction saves energy and can also reduce the required sizes of electrical equipment due to lower kVA. Power factocorrection enables your organization to become more environmentally responsible without reducing the amount of working poweavailable. This corresponds to additional savings in material costs that would have been used to produce larger electrical equipmeand distribution systems.
As part of a power factor correction system, harmonic filters resolve the power anomalies caused by harmonics that shortenequipment life and trigger unexpected shutdowns. By controlling harmonics, current levels in the system are reduced and heatis removed from the system. This, in turn, minimizes troublesome issues such as blown fuses, damaged motors and failedtransformers, extending equipment life.
Harmonic Mitigating Transformers
Use of harmonic mitigating transformers (HMTs) smooth out the energy-use curve. The increasing amount of electronic equipmenin facilities increases the amount of nonlinear loads, reducing the efficiency of electronic equipment and creating overload condi-tions. HMTs correct this situation.
The results are 30% less power loss when compared with standard delta-wye designed transformers.

disposal compared withtraditional construction.Even the packaging wasteis significantly reduced.
Circuit Breakers
Eatons circuit breakers canbe reset and reused overand over again, essentiallyrecycled when compared witha standard fuse that must bereplaced and discarded incompliance with specialdisposal procedures.
Eaton produces 600A andlarger molded-case circuit
breakers in Beaver, PAwithin 500 miles of nearly50% of the U.S. population.
In a power distribution panel, circuit breakers ranging from1001200 amps consume40%50% of the space ofcomparable fusible devices.
Variable Frequency Drives
Eaton produces its encloseddrives models HVX9000 inWatertown, WIwithin 500miles of much of the MidwestU.S. population.
The HVX9000 IntelliPass/IntelliDisconnect family has afootprint that is one-third thesize of other typical bypassdrive offerings, reducingbuilding space and packagingrequirements. The designalso significantly reduces
the weight of the bypassdrive by 70%, decreasingshipping loads.
Eaton Products
A powder-coat paintingsystem is used to paintEaton electrical equipment, eliminating Volatile OrganicCompounds (VOCs) that wouldbe released from conventionalsolvent-based paints.
Power Factor CorrectionCapacitors and Filters
Power Factor Correction mayallow for innovative use ofnormally wasted energy bymaximizing usable energythat is distributed within thebuilding. PFC also reduceswaste by extending the lifeof electrical products such asmotors, elevators and HVACby providing improved powerquality to these devices.
Busway
Busway sized to carry thesame current as cable willhave lower losses andimprove energy performance. It can also be reconfigured
easily as needs change.
Power Xpert Softwareand Meters
Power Xpert Architecture helpsbuilding operations beyondtraditional power manage-ment systems. Power XpertArchitecture can open thedoor to communicating with
the rest of your organization, because it is based on theEthernet protocol that is thede facto standard for modernlocal area communicationsnetworks.
Once your power systemis linked to an Ethernetnetwork via the Power XpertArchitecture, you can con-nect to applications like thebuilding management system, monitoring your HVACequipment or sharinginformation with your enter-
prise accounting system.Paralleling Switchgear
Paralleling switchgear mayallow for innovative useof waste heat for powerproduction or integrationof other renewable powersources that still require somegrid-connected power. Theparalleling switchgear is acritical component to a morecomprehensive renewableenergy strategy.

Located at strategic locationsthroughout the United States, these regional manufactur-ing facilities manufacture anddeliver standard or customassembled panelboards, switchboards, enclosedcircuit breakers, motor controlcenters, enclosed control, LVand MV switchgear and MVcontrol when and where
needed. And with that kindof proximity to the projectsite, transportation costs andassociated fuel are reducedsignificantly. Eaton is the onlyelectrical manufacturer thatuses smaller satellitemanufacturing facilities acrossthe country to cater to indi-vidual needs using as muchregional resources as possible.
