I�lingered�and�delayed,�so�that�you�would�speak�on�behalf�of�the
world.�But�you�thought�of�no�one�but�your�family.�And�now�you

I�am�writing�to�you�one�month�after�Rosh�Hashanah,�when�we�
celebrated�the�creation�of�our�magnificent�world.��Now,�one�month
later,�we�read�in�Torah�about�the�time�of�Noah,�when�the�world�
was�destroyed�because�of�human�greed,�corruption,�and�inaction.�
One�month�ago,�I�spoke�about�the�moral�imperative�of�reversing�
climate�change�and�environmental�devastation,�and�I�asked�the
members�of�our�congregation�to�each�make�one�big�change�this�
year�for�the�sake�of�our�children:�go�solar,�switch�to�an�electric�car,
dramatically�reduce�water�use,�cut�red�meat�consumption�by�twenty
percent,�or�shift�our�investments�from�fossil�fuels�to�renewables.��
I�asked�you�to�please�tell�me,�by�email�or�phone�message,�about�
the�changes�that�you�make. I�challenged�us�as�a�congregation�to�see�
if�we�might�achieve�100�new�solar�homes�by�next�Rosh�Hashanah.��
If�we�can�achieve�100�solar�homes�among�us�this�year,�it�will�be�
the�equivalent�of�taking�2,400�cars�off�the�road�and�saving�6,000�
acres�of�trees.��

our�collective�progress.��This�is�what�you’ve�told�me�so�far,�in�
our�first�month�since�Rosh�Hashanah.��

are�seriously�considering�entering�some�friendly�competition
with�Leo�Baeck�Temple,�trying�to�beat�us�to�100�solar�homes.

On�the�Sunday�after�Rosh�Hashanah,�my�solar�panels�were�
installed�on�my�roof.��It�was�easy�and�it�was�free,�and�now
my�electricity�will�come�from�the�sun.��Each�of�the�companies
you�see�below�will�assess�your�home’s�solar-readiness�for�free
and�then�work�with�you�to�create�a�solar�plan�that�both�saves
you�money�and�contributes�to�saving�the�earth.��Since�Rosh
Hashanah,�a�fourth�solar�company,�Blue�Sky�Energy,�has�asked�
to�be�included�in�our�list.��When�you�call�these�companies,
please�tell�them�that�Leo�Baeck�Temple�referred�you.

Oh�how�I�wish�I�had�the�answers…but�at�least�I�can�offer�a�path
Never�accepting�the�status�quo�is�central�to�our�Jewish�tradition.� Israel,literally�translates�as,�“wrestling�with
G-d,”�and�this�wrestling�is�central�to�the�Torah�and�Jewish�
tradition.��We�as�a�people�are�commanded�to�question�and�
challenge�concepts,�ideas�and�the�status�quo.��Our�tradition
teaches�that�questioning�is�important�to�understanding�and�
action.��The�Talmud�sometimes�notes�the�opinion�of�a�single
sage.��I�translate�this�in�modern�day�to�“out�of�the�box”�think-
ing.��It�is�hard�to�be�the�lone�voice.�Yet�it�is�exactly�this�type�
of�thinking�that�brings�true�paradigm�shifts�in�technology,�
ideology,�social�change,�and�personal�growth.��
Leo�Baeck�Temple�is�a�strong�community.��I�was�overwhelmed
with�responses�from�our�congregation�about�getting�more�
involved.��I�see�our�ranks�of�“regular”�participants�in�programs
and�volunteers�swelling.��This�is�one�of�the�great�gifts�about
membership�in�LBT,�a�way�to�feel�part�of�something.��Yet�I�
know�that�each�of�us�struggles.��We�struggle�within�ourselves�
to�be�our�best�self�and�we�struggle�with�issues�beyond�
ourselves�such�as�social�injustice�and�world�peace.
LBT�is�a�community�that�is�passionate�about�Israel,�about�
peace�and�equally�passionate�about�how�to�move�peace�
forward.��I�use�the�word�passion�deliberately�to�reflect�how
strongly�each�of�us�holds�to�our�ideals�about�Israel,�its�policies
and�the�peace�process.��I�also�know�that�our�community’s�
ideas�about�Israel�and�its�policies�are�highly�divergent.��Our
clergy�are�devoted�to�helping�us�understand�Israel;�From�the
Hartman�series�lectures�about�Israel,�to�the�Rabbi’s�book�
group�discussion�of�Ari�Shavit’s,�My�Promised�Land to�bringing
trail�blazers�in�the�Israel�peace�effort�to�our�community.��I�
was�moved�by�the�grass�roots�group�Polyphony;�using�music�
as�a�means�to�gain�understanding�among�young�Israeli�Arabs�
and�Israeli�Jews�in�the�Galilee�through�classical�music.��I�am�
inspired�by�Ali�Abu�Awad,�a�Palestinian�living�in�Gaza�who�has
spent�time�in�Israeli�prison�yet�is�a�pioneer�for�peace�and�has�
found�friendship,�hope�and�peace�with�an�Orthodox�Israeli�rabbi
living�in�a�West�Bank�settlement.
I�would�like�to�highlight�some�unique�opportunities�to�connect�
the�dots.��The�first�is�a�Hartman�Institute�series�of�live�lectures
about�Jewish�Peoplehood.��The�second�is�an�opportunity�to�
become�your�best�self�through�the�ancient�practice�of�Mussar�
with�Alan�Morinis,�a�modern�Mussar�teacher�and�practitioner.
The�Hartman�series�of�lectures�about�Jewish�Peoplehood�starts�
November�2�and�continues�monthly�through�April.��Join�many�
of�your�fellow�congregants�in�important,�thoughtful,�creative�
discussions�about�what�it�means�to�be�a�Jew.��These�lectures,�
held�at�different�synagogues�around�Los�Angeles,�will�explore�
our�relationship�with�Israel,�our�neighbors,�our�obligations�to�
other�Jews�and�non-Jews,�world�opinion,�what�it�means�to�be�
a�Jew�in�the�diaspora�versus�Israel,�and�other�complex�topics.��
