“WhenNoahcameoutoftheark,heopened

OhhowIwishIhadtheanswers…butatleastIcanofferapath

NeveracceptingthestatusquoiscentraltoourJewishtradition. Israel,literallytranslatesas,“wrestlingwith

G-d,”andthiswrestlingiscentraltotheTorahandJewish

tradition.Weasapeoplearecommandedtoquestionand

challengeconcepts,ideasandthestatusquo.Ourtradition

teachesthatquestioningisimportanttounderstandingand

action.TheTalmudsometimesnotestheopinionofasingle

sage.Itranslatethisinmoderndayto“outofthebox”think-

ing.Itishardtobethelonevoice.Yetitisexactlythistype

ofthinkingthatbringstrueparadigmshiftsintechnology,

ideology,socialchange,andpersonalgrowth.

LeoBaeckTempleisastrongcommunity.Iwasoverwhelmed

withresponsesfromourcongregationaboutgettingmore

involved.Iseeourranksof“regular”participantsinprograms

andvolunteersswelling.Thisisoneofthegreatgiftsabout

membershipinLBT,awaytofeelpartofsomething.YetI

knowthateachofusstruggles.Westrugglewithinourselves

tobeourbestselfandwestrugglewithissuesbeyond

ourselvessuchassocialinjusticeandworldpeace.

LBTisacommunitythatispassionateaboutIsrael,about

peaceandequallypassionateabouthowtomovepeace

forward.Iusethewordpassiondeliberatelytoreflecthow

stronglyeachofusholdstoouridealsaboutIsrael,itspolicies

andthepeaceprocess.Ialsoknowthatourcommunity’s

ideasaboutIsraelanditspoliciesarehighlydivergent.Our

Iwouldliketohighlightsomeuniqueopportunitiestoconnect

thedots.ThefirstisaHartmanInstituteseriesoflivelectures

ofyourfellowcongregantsinimportant,thoughtful,creative

discussionsaboutwhatitmeanstobeaJew.Theselectures,

heldatdifferentsynagoguesaroundLosAngeles,willexplore

ourrelationshipwithIsrael,ourneighbors,ourobligationsto
