IRI Annual Digest A 2013 Recap
Providing Member Value Through Research, Education, and Advocacy
IRI believes in the necessity of all Americans to strengthen their retirement security through the guarantees provided by insured retirement strategies. In the wake of difficult financial times, these strategies demonstrated the unique ability to deliver unprecedented peace of mind to investors who place their trust in these products.
As the only association that represents the entire supply chain of insured retirement solutions, IRI is uniquely poised to leverage the collective strength of our membership to advance our shared goals through industry leading research, education and advocacy. By working together through IRI, the distinct value proposition of our industry can be fully maximized to grow advisor engagement to serve new clients and expand our footprint in the financial marketplace and with policymakers.
Welcome
Dear Member,
Over the last several years, the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) has helped the industries and members we serve deepen their understanding of the issues influencing retirement preparedness. IRI’s leadership in research, education and advocacy has heightened awareness of the need for solutions that will help more Americans achieve the secure and dignified retirement they deserve.
With more than 60 million Baby Boomers reaching retirement by 2030, it is vital that IRI continue to grow its industry-leading work educating and engaging consumers and advisors about the importance of saving for retirement.
Under the leadership of a highly engaged and diverse Board of Directors, IRI continues to advance its founding mission: to encourage industry adherence to highest ethical principles; promote better understanding of the insured retirement value proposition; develop and promote best practice standards to improve value delivery; and advocate before public policymakers on critical issues affecting insured retirement strategies and the consumers that rely on their guarantees.
And it is because of the commitment and dedication of our members that we achieved great successes in 2013. IRI grew its membership by adding more than 30 new member companies, now putting the number of member firms and affiliates receiving benefits at more than 850. The association unveiled two new websites – one for members and the other for external stakeholders. Both online properties experienced a growth in traffic, with the Members Only Website seeing an increase of more than 30 percent.
Over the course of the year, IRI delivered more than 20 pieces of thought leadership and research, focusing on marketplace trends, consumer issues and policy matters. IRI also established the Champion of Retirement Security Award, and honored Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) at a Capitol Hill Event. And on the Operations and Technology front, this area of the member base increased by nearly 20 percent, and through committee and working group efforts delivered new educational resources to apprise members of progress in this area.
IRI continued to provide highly sought after educational and practice management offerings, building a suite of FINRA-reviewed, client resources that now offers more than 50 informative engagement tools. Last year, the association also offered a dozen webinars, most for continuing education credit, engaging more than 3,000 financial professionals on a wide array of policy, industry and research topics.
These are just a handful of the advancements we have achieved together over the past year. Please take a moment to review this digest for a more thorough understanding of how your association is leveraging its status to deliver unparalleled service. We look forward to your continued partnership in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Cathy Weatherford President and CEO Insured Retirement Institute

AdvocacyAs the voice and advocate for the industry on legislative and regulatory matters in Washington and the states, IRI works to keep its members updated on public policy developments and delivers expert resources to stay informed on the important issues impacting their businesses, while providing policymakers with information on the issues affecting retirement income in America.
This year, IRI established the Champion of Retirement Security Award to recognize outstanding public policymakers who support and advance policies that enhance retirement security in America. At the inaugural ceremony in December, IRI honored Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) for their years of bipartisan leadership that have been essential to promoting the retirement savings industry.
IRI reached over 175 members of Congress or congressional offices through Capitol Hill meetings or briefings regarding tax reform, Department of Labor Fiduciary Initiative, NARAB II and other retirement legislation.
To protect the current tax treatment of annuities, IRI advocated before the House Ways and Means Committee about the importance of the current tax treatment of annuities as a part of the Committee’s work on tax reform. IRI also worked through Americans to Protect Family Security, Coalition to Preserve Retirement, and the Retirement Savings Network to protect the current treatment of annuities.
The association advocated before the SEC that any new uniform fiduciary standard should enhance investor protection, preserve consumer choice in products and services, and promote consumer access to products and services.
A top priority for the association, IRI continues to coordinate its Department of Labor fiduciary advocacy efforts with a large coalition of financial services and retirement trade associations.
To promote efficient and cost-effective licensing of financial advisors across the nation, IRI provided testimony earlier this year for a Senate Banking Committee Hearing in support of NARAB II and worked to help pass the bill in the House by a vote of 397-6.

IRI successfully secured NAIC’s finding that the current consumer protection rules relating to annuities apply to and are adequate for Contingent Deferred Annuities (CDAs), and defeated an effort to expand the review of the financial solvency rules CDAs to include unnecessary and time consuming testing.
IRI successfully advocated for the Department of Labor to issue a proposal requiring lifetime income illustrations on participant benefit statements and provided key input on how to develop and implement the rule.
In an effort to identify policy and research initiatives that will advance lifetime income strategies, IRI hosted its first Retirement Plan Summit— bringing together key players from the retirement businesses of IRI member companies.
