INDIAMOBILE TALENTLANDSCAPE REPORT 2016

IntroductionWhether you wish to stream a movie, sell your car or find love, you can now do so from the palm of your hand, thanks to mobile devices. By 2020 the world is expected to see 4.6 billion unique mobile subscribers, consuming 30.6 exabytes of data every month. Smartphones alone are slated to account for 50 percent of global devices and connections by the end of the decade[1].
Whichever way you look at it, mobile phones are rapidly reshaping our world. Businesses everywhere have been quick to catch on, including here in India. Ola, which only recently celebrated its 5th birthday, already serves over a million customers every day in over 100 cities. Even laggard sectors like health-care aren’t being left behind, thanks to companies such as Practo that are making it easy for people to find doctors anywhere.
Such exponential growth is bound to see a rapid and sudden increase in demand for talent — and in this case, companies are racing to hire top-notch mobile teams, in particular, mobile developers. Talent decision-makers who are crafting their hiring plans this year are trying hard to understand what actually makes up the mobile talent pool in India. What cities, companies, and industries are seeing the biggest draw? And what online networks and platforms could they potentially leverage?
As a step towards building such intelligence for our partners, Belong undertook a study of over 25,000 mobile developers in India. Read on for the results.

Mobile developers take on new jobs every 1.5 years Mobile developers leave their
employers to take on new jobs every 1.5 years. This relatively short tenure is largely a result and indicator of how competitive the mobile talent market has become. IT Services and Computer Software companies are competing for talent directly with well-funded E-commerce companies oering faster growth with record salaries.
Another motivation for developers to move so frequently could also be that building an app usually takes 12-18 months. Once built, the work that follows mostly entails enhancements and maintenance. Hardly exciting for passionate developers who are only beginning their careers.

E-commerce clearly the more lucrative option for mobile developers
Across cities, mobile developers employed in E-commerce and Internet companies enjoy twice the salary benefits compared to their counterparts in IT Services companies. While the figures for E-commerce and Internet companies reflect the boom in venture funding seen over the last couple of years, we expect these numbers will stabilize in the coming months as funding tightens and companies cut their spend.

While Bengaluru holds the definitive lead for both Android and iOS talent, at 28% and 20% respectively, NCR follows close at nearly 18% for both categories.
Given the large concentration of mobile talent between both cities, it’s no surprise that they are also the country’s leading hubs for innovative startups. For example, in Q1 this year, both of them pulled 66% of total startup funding in India.[2]

In line with national talent trends, over 60% of the talent pool in both Bengaluru and NCR comprises fresher and mid-level talent. Companies looking to hire iOS and Android developers with 0-5 years of experience are likely to see success in both cities.
However, Bengaluru’s talent concentration appears to run deeper. With more than 10% of its pool comprising lead-level talent, companies aiming to hire tech architects and lead engineers are more likely to find success here.

While Mumbai trails all major cities in its share of the total pool, it also appears to be growing the fastest. Delhi and Pune, at 24% and 16% respectively, are the largest contributors to the maximum city’s inflow.
Bengaluru and NCR, which already account for a majority of the pool, continue to show robust growth.
Worryingly, for Hyderabad and Chennai, there is a talent deficit to overcome. And in both cases, nearly half the outgoing talent pool is relocating to Bengaluru.

Emerging cities show promiseAhmedabad, Kolkata, Indore, Cochin and Chandigarh together contribute to 10% of India’s mobile talent pool. This could largely be attributed to the expansion of India’s IT and IT Services sectors to tier-2 cities, and their subsequent hiring of talent from regional colleges.
In Kolkata, top employers of mobile talent include IBM, Cognizant, Wipro, TATA Consultancy Services, QBurst, Indus Net, Ericsson, Web Spiders, Lexmark, Accenture, and ARC Document Solutions.
In Indore, top employers include Vinfotech, Impetus Technologies, InnoEye Technologies, Cyber Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., Diaspark Infotech Pvt. Ltd, Ideavate Solutions, InfoBeans, Synsoft Global, Canopus Infosystems Private Limited, Systematix Infotech Pvt Ltd and Worldpay.

Ahmedabad tops the list of emerging cities, with 4.5% of the total mobile developer workforce, with much of its inflow and outflow happening between the nearby cities of Pune and Mumbai.
However, a deeper dig into the city’s talent pool reveals two key trends:
An overwhelming 83% of the talent hails from the city, and are largely employed in the IT services sector. Companies include eInfochips, IndiaNIC Infotech Ltd., InfoStretch Solutions Pvt. Ltd., OpenXcell Technolabs, Credencys Solutions Inc, Cygnet Infotech Pvt. Ltd., Panamax Infotech Limited, Gateway Technolabs, Verve Systems Pvt. Ltd.The city sees a disproportionately low outflow of talent, with less than 5% of its total pool leaving for opportunities in Pune and Mumbai.
We believe all these factors make Ahmedabad an undiscovered goldmine for companies looking to recruit talent from tier-2 cities.
