TheconstructionsectorinIndiahasseentremendousgrowthinthelastfewdecades.Thetrainingprogrammeis developed to impart specific skills to individuals who wish to work as Assistant Surveyors. The trainingprogrammeisbasedonthequalificationpackforAssistantSurveyor.Itismeanttohelpintheconstructionofnewstructureslikeroads,highways,canals,bridges,undergrounddrainagesforhousingsocieties.Schoolsandcollegesalsorequirespropertysurveybeforeconstruction.ThereareveryfewskilledworkersforconstructionworkinIndia.ThepurposeofAssistantSurveyortrainingistoskillmorepeopleinthefieldtoworkwiththeSur-veyorinconstructionwork/projects.Thequalityoftheconstructionisexpectedtoimproveoncompletionofthetraining.
ThetrainingforthejobroleofAssistantSurveyorisprovidedthroughclassroomandpracticalsessions.Thetotaldurationofthetrainingprogrammeasrecommendedinthequalificationpackis6-8weeks.

Throughthenationalpolicyonskilldevelopment2009Indiarecognizedtheneedfordevelopmentofanationalqualificationframework.ThenationalskillqualificationframeworkNSQFcameintobeingaspertheGazetteNotificationno8/06/2013dated27thDec.2013.NSQFisaqualityassuranceframework.
ItisanoutcomebasedapproachandeachlevelintheNSQFisdefinedanddescribedintermsofcompetencylevelswhichneedstobeachieved.TheNationalSkillQualificationFrameworkiscomposedof10levels,eachrepresentsdifferentlevelofcompetency.Level1representsthelowestcompetencyandlevel10representsthehighestcompetencylevel.Competencemeanstheprovenabilitytouseacquiredknowledge,skillsandpersonalandsocialabilitiesindischargeofresponsibilityofajobrole.ItisimportanttonotethattheNSQFlevelsarenotdirectlyrelatedtoyearsofstudy.

UNIT 1.2 An Overview of the Construction Sector
1.2.1 Introduction Constructionreferstobuildingofdifferenttypesofstructures.Thesectorcomprisesmanysmall,mediumand
largeindustriesorcompanies.Thecompaniesinvolveindifferenttypesofprojects.Theycreateadiverse,butspecificrequirementofworkmen.
The construction sector can be broadly classified into two sub sectors: real estate and infrastructureconstruction,ruralconstruction.
1. Real estate and infrastructure construction: This sub sector comprises all theworks that are requiredfor construction of all types of infrastructure and real estate projects. Infrastructure projects are thosethatdirectly or indirectly affect thegrowthof thenation. Forexample, roads, airports, railwaybridges,dams, power plants, metros, industries, etc. Real estate projects are those which mainly focus onprovidingresidentialandcommercialworkplacestoallcategoriesofpeople.Forexample,residentialtowers,independenthouses,malls,sportscomplex,etc.
2. Rural construction: Thissubsector focusesontheconstructionalrequirementsofruralareas. It includesconstructionofruralhouseholds,warehouses,villageroads,etc.
Fromtheearlyagestothepresentday,theconstructionsectorhasgeneratedemployment.Ithasalsoundergoneextensivemodernization,fromrawmaterialtotheuseofheavyequipment.Theuseofmodernequipmentandtechniqueshasincreasedthespeedofconstructionwork.Ithasenhancedthequalityoffinishedstructures.Further,bymodernizationofconstruction,itisnowpossibletoconstructunderwateraswellasinveryhighaltitudes.Modernizationhashelpedtobuildhi-techbuildingsandatomicpowergenerationplants.

Construction is the second largestemploymentgenerating sector in Indiaa eragriculture. Therearemanyjobrolesinconstruction.Dependingonthenatureofwork,somejobrolescatertotheemploymentneedsofmaximumnumberofworkmenandaremoreprominentthanothers.
Thefollowingoccupationsareverycommoninmostoftheconstructionprojects:
Surveying,Masonry,Barbending,Shutteringcarpentry,Scaffolding,Painting.
1. Surveying:Surveyingistheartofdeterminingrelativepositionsofobjectsonthesurfaceoftheearth. Itisdonebytakingmeasurements inthehorizontalandverticalplanes.Themeasurementsaredrawntoaconvenientsizeonpaper.Theyareknownasmapsorplans.
Insurveying,fieldworkconsistsoftakingmeasurementofdetailsonearth.Itinvolvesrecordingthefieldnotesandsetting,preparingmaps,plansandsectionsfromthedatacollected.Volumedesigningofvariousstructuresisdonewiththecollecteddata.Basicobjectivesofthejobroleincludes:

Preparingthelistofitemsrequiredfortheday’sworkaspertheSurveyor’sinstructions•
Handlingtools/equipment/materialsrelatedtosurveying.•
Maintaining,storingandstackingtools/equipment/materialsusedforsurveying.•
2. Masonry: Masonrycomprisesofworkinwhichbricks,stones,concreteblocksandconcreteareusedalongwithbondingmixturecalledmortar.
Masonryhelpstoconstructcomponentsofbuildingsandotherstructures.
Basic objectives of the job role include:
Buildingstructurebylayingmaterialssuchasbricks,blocks,tilesandotherconstructionmaterialsandbondingthembymortar.
Constructing,altering,repairingandmaintainingwalls,sidewalks,streetcurbs,floors,sinkcounters,partitions,manholesandotherrelatedstructuresorsurfaces.
Carryingoutstructuralfinisheslikegirtwash,cementwash,POP,plastering,stonecladdingetc.,onfinishedmasonrysurfaces.Ithelpstobringanaestheticappealtothefinishedstructure.

3. Bar bending and fixing
Thejobofbarbendingandfixingincludesshi ing,cutting,bendingandplacingthereinforcementbar.Ithelpstoassemblecage/meshaccordingtothegivendrawingorspecification.
