Perception deception is an exhibition designed to awaken within visitors the understanding that our experience of the outside world is actually an interpretation of sensory input being sent to our brains via electrical signals. This information will be conveyed to the visitor through a series of gradually more immersive and more realistic ambiguous situations, beginning with simple ambiguous figures and finishing with artwork by Tim Noble and Sue Webster and Pepper’s Ghost type situations.
The first section will examine ambiguous figures such as the devil’s fork or the cafe wall illusion. This section will consist of flat interactive graphics, somewhat like a pop-up book, where visitors will study the illusion, then interact with it to reveal what is going on and why our senses might interpret the material differently. Questions will be posed to visitors beginning to push their mindsets.
In the second section, visitors will encounter a series of ambiguous three dimensional and experiential situations. They will proceed through a Vortex Tunnel, which will give the impression that they, and not the tunnel around them, are spinning. At the end of the tunnel, visitors will enter a “Mystery Spot” type experience. From the outside, the house will appear to be flat on the ground, but in fact, the interior will be slanted, allowing for seeming impossibilites of gravity. Disorientation from the Vortex Tunnel will hopefully mask the transition from flat to sloped ground.
In the final section, visitors will encounter more realistic ambiguous experiences, such as art pieces by Tim Noble and Sue Webster. These artworks will be presented in a particular fashion, the visitor will first see the shadows of the pieces before getting a glimpse of the main structure of the work, which looks like something completely different. Finally visitors will witness Pepper’s Ghost style illusions as objects around them, other visitors, etc. appear to appear and disappear.

The mission of perception deception is to convey to the visitor the idea that all experience is interpreted. The exhibition will accomplish this by creating an environment of gradually more immersive exposure to ambiguous figures and situations.
All experience is interpreted.
perception deception will put the visitor into an introspective, philosophical mode of thought.
The exhibition will cause the visitor to think more critically about how they experience the world around them, and how they gather and interpret information about that world.
perception deception will utilize both two-dimensional images and three-dimensional objects and experiences in conveying its message.
Visitors will feel suprised and disoriented by the time they reach the conclusion of the exhibition.

Gestalt
The gestalt of perception deception will be simple, clean and modern with straight edges, taking inspiration from drawings of ambiguous figures. It will have nooks and crannies, small windows in unexpected places, and curving text on the floors and walls to create a dynamic environment ripe for exploration.
