Talk is central to all aspects of literacy development. Model reading to your child. It is important for your child to
see you reading for real purposes and enjoyment. Continue to read to your children even when they can read independently. Make a time in your daily routine when you and your child are relaxed, to read together. This reading time (10 – 15 minutes each day) should not be stressful, rushed or tested. Support your child’s reading choices. Find ways to read texts that
they want to read. This may include comic books, computer programs, graphic novels or
magazines. Remember, easier texts help children to automatize reading strategies and skills, allowing for deeper comprehension and understanding to occur.
Promote reading. Use books, audio books and electronic books as rewards, gifts and incentives.
