Spijkenisse  is a town in the

western Netherlands , in the

province of South Holland.

Archaeological research has shown that the area around Spijkenisse has been inhabited for many thousands of years. The people then depended on fishing on the Meuse and hunting in the swamps.

The medieval village church is the oldest building in Spijkenisse

Spijkenisse grew out of farming and fishing villages along the Oude Maas. Originally belonged to Lord Putten, but in 1459 Fief Putten Facilities - Spijkenisse was transferred to Philip III, Duke of Burgundy. In 1581 years, the area was under the control of the Earl of Holland. In the 17th and 18th century, the city endured the devastating fires, which affected its economic performance-growth. People lived from fishing and hunting.

From 1817 to 1966 Spijkenisse and Hekelingen were two independent communities under a mayor. After World War II, the village was still modest in size, but from the 60s and 70s, the township as urban growth has become a heavy midsize municipality.

Spijkenisse is currently working hard to overcome its urban growth condition by the current City Plan: a comprehensive Spijkenisse project should provide a larger and more diversified center.
