1. INTRODUCTION
THIS DOCUMENT IS TO BE READ IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DESIGN GUIDE FOR RESIDENTIALROADS, THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY MANUAL OF CONTRACT DOCUMENTS FOR HIGHWAY WORKSAND THE SOUTH YORKSHIRE LABORATORY SPECIFICATION FOR THE SUPPLY OF MATERIALSFOR USE IN HIGHWAY WORKSINTRODUCTIONThisGeneralSpecificationisissuedfortheguidanceofdevelopers,andformsthegeneralbasisforalternativemethodsofconstructionforHousingEstateRoadsandIndustrialEstateRoadswhichtheHighwayAuthorityisultimatelyrequiredtoadoptashighwaytobemaintainedatpublicexpense.INSPECTIONSThe Highway Authority shall be notified at least 3 days Noticeprior to the commencement of any stage of the works.
If,asaresultoffailuretogiveadequatenoticeofanystageofthe Failure to giveconstructionworkstheEngineerisunabletoinspectthesame,the adequate noticeDeveloperwillberequiredtocarryouttestsathisownexpensetoprovetotheHighwayAuthorityssatisfactionthattheworkscomplywiththeappropriatestandard.Otherwise,oncompletion,theworkmaynotbeconsideredforadoption.

Andthefollowing:-SAMPLES AND TESTINGRepresentativesamplesofallmaterialsproposedtobeusedinthe GeneralworksshallbesubmittedfortheEngineersapprovalnotlessthanthreeweeksbeforetheyaretobeusedintheworks,andshallbeinaccordancewithSouthYorkshireLaboratorySpecificationfortheSupplyofMaterialsforuseinHighwayWorks.Suchapprovalshallbeobtainedbeforeanymaterialsaredeliveredtosite.AnymaterialsnotconformingwiththeSpecificationandrequirementswillbecondemnedinwhichcasetheymustberemovedfromthesite.TheEngineermayrequirematerialtobetestedonaroutine Routinebasisataratewhichwillnormallynotexceed; Testing CarriagewayOnesampleper50mlengthofcarriageway. Onesampleper100mlengthofcarriageway. (SurfacingMaterial)Itmaybenecessarytotakesamplesforeachlayingoperation FootwaysIfanymaterialisbelowthequalityrequired,itwillbecondemnedandmustberemoved.The Developer shall bear the cost of all sampling and testing Costsrequired by the Engineer.
