    1. INTRODUCTION

    THIS DOCUMENT IS TO BE READ IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DESIGN GUIDE FOR RESIDENTIALROADS, THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY MANUAL OF CONTRACT DOCUMENTS FOR HIGHWAY WORKSAND THE SOUTH YORKSHIRE LABORATORY SPECIFICATION FOR THE SUPPLY OF MATERIALSFOR USE IN HIGHWAY WORKSINTRODUCTIONThisGeneralSpecificationisissuedfortheguidanceofdevelopers,andformsthegeneralbasisforalternativemethodsofconstructionforHousingEstateRoadsandIndustrialEstateRoadswhichtheHighwayAuthorityisultimatelyrequiredtoadoptashighwaytobemaintainedatpublicexpense.INSPECTIONSThe Highway Authority shall be notified at least 3 days Noticeprior to the commencement of any stage of the works.

    If,asaresultoffailuretogiveadequatenoticeofanystageofthe Failure to giveconstructionworkstheEngineerisunabletoinspectthesame,the adequate noticeDeveloperwillberequiredtocarryouttestsathisownexpensetoprovetotheHighwayAuthorityssatisfactionthattheworkscomplywiththeappropriatestandard.Otherwise,oncompletion,theworkmaynotbeconsideredforadoption.

MATERIALSWherever,inrespectofanyBritishStandard(BS),aBSIKitemark BSCertificationschemeisavailable,allmaterialsarerequiredtocomply Accreditationwiththatstandard,orthecontainersofsuchmaterials,shallbemarkedwithaBSICertificationTrademark(theKitemark).ThemarkofconformityofanyotherthirdpartycertificationbodyaccreditationbytheNationalAccreditationCouncilforCertificationBodiesorequivalentshallbeanacceptablealternativetothisrequirement.Atthedateofconstruction,allarticlesandmaterialsshallconformto:- GENERAL

    Andthefollowing:-SAMPLES AND TESTINGRepresentativesamplesofallmaterialsproposedtobeusedinthe GeneralworksshallbesubmittedfortheEngineersapprovalnotlessthanthreeweeksbeforetheyaretobeusedintheworks,andshallbeinaccordancewithSouthYorkshireLaboratorySpecificationfortheSupplyofMaterialsforuseinHighwayWorks.Suchapprovalshallbeobtainedbeforeanymaterialsaredeliveredtosite.AnymaterialsnotconformingwiththeSpecificationandrequirementswillbecondemnedinwhichcasetheymustberemovedfromthesite.TheEngineermayrequirematerialtobetestedonaroutine Routinebasisataratewhichwillnormallynotexceed; Testing CarriagewayOnesampleper50mlengthofcarriageway.     Excavationshallbetocorrectlines,levelsandcontours. DRAINAGEGENERALThis document is concerned only with highway drainage.Sewers are the responsibility of the Sewerage Undertaker and anyconcerns or queries regarding sewers are to be directed to them. AllDrainageworksaretocarriedoutinaccordancewiththelatestrequirementsofSeries500ofTheSpecificationForHighwayWorks:-ThelatestrequirementsofSouthYorkshireLaboratorySpecificationForTheSupplyofMaterialsForUseinHighwayWorks:-Andthefollowing:-Drawingsshowingproposeddrainagedetailstogetherwith DrawingsappropriateschedulesandappendicesshallbesubmittedtoTheEngineerpriortocommencementoftheworks.
