Their sound is indelibly kiwi and hypnotically tight, well worth a watch.

Dear God, John Travolta looks ridiculous in this film! He plays the character Charlie Wax, a wise cracking, cannon toting CIA agent. He leads law abiding James, played by Irish heart throb Jonathan Rhys Meyers on a hair raising mission to stop a Parisian terrorist attack. Featuring eye incinerating action through the underworld of Europes seedy city, which takes everything you love about Paris and blows it up.

JONAH FROM TONGA COMEDY CENTRAL, 9.25PM
The character of Jonah Takalua is even more incredulous when you realise middle-aged Aussie mega comic Chris Lilley plays him. This show takes everything you loved about the original show and pushes it to the extreme.

UTOPIASOHO, 9.30PM
Utopia is a cultish graphic novel which many claim has predicted the worst disasters of the 20th century, or so this terrifying new thriller says, penned by master television writer Dennis Kelly. A small group of outsiders stumble upon Utopia and find themselves in the eye of a terrifying storm of conspiracy and danger as they are targeted by shady organisations.
CLERKS SKY MOVIES CLASSICS, 8.30PM
This is the slackers bible, in all its glorious black and white celluloid glory. The premise of the film is ridiculously simple, and so it needed to be on such a paper thin budget. Poor Dante wasnt even supposed to be at work today, but that doesnt stop it being his most defining day of work ever. The film works on lightening quick dialogue and the introduction of the notorious characters Jay and Silent Bob.
SOUND CITY PRIME, 9.30PM
Dave Grohl is the man who made it from uber cool grunge drummer to stadium filling mega star. He is now the proud director of Sound City, which looks at the LA recording studio where many of the greatest albums ever have been perfected. To be a fly on the wall of these hallowed halls would be incredible, this show comes a close second however, interviewing musicans and producers spelling out what the place meant for them.

Eating Drinking
BETTER BURGER31 GALWAY STREET
AUCKLAND
Simple and to the point, this new burger establishment had people queuing out the door during its opening weeks. An American style burger bar in the heart of Britomart, the menu is cheap and brief. Choose a burger, chips and a drink -let the food do the talking. The burgers seem to be inspired by In-N-Out burger, which those lucky enough to have visited California have been craving ever since. Better Burger is sandwiched between Britomart Country Club and 1885 and despite the fast food prices, their products are organic and locally sourced. Better Burger stays open until midnight (and later). The only question left to ask: To cheese or not to cheese?
TYLER STREET GARAGE120 QUAY ST
AUCKLAND
Tyler Street Garage offers one of the best nights out in Auckland. An industrial styled bar, as the name suggests, it used to be a garage. Britomart has become the heart of Aucklands nightlife and this is in no small part due to the influence of Tyler Street Garage. For those looking to impress, there is a private rooftop bar with incredible views of the harbour. The main bar oozes sophisticated cool, whether you are here for a chill drink or a big night out. The bar has a selection of the best DJs that New Zealand has to offer, playing late into the night. Believe me, even if you have to queue its worth the wait!
DIZENGOFF256 PONSONBY RD
AUCKLAND
Dizengoff is highly regarded as being a sleekly fitted out establishment high on modernist style. Pure minimalism, the place carries carefully chosen works of art and seems to gleam with natural light even when there is little to speak of outside. Their coffee is renowned and so are their bagels. A Ponsonby institution, the place has a kosher foundation and many of their meals have a middle eastern twist.
BLEND BAR120 WAKEFIELD ST
WELLINGTON
Blend Bar & Caf is the ultimate party bar in Wellington, with a new food menu on offer there are now even more delectable treats to soak up all that beer. Situated in the heart of the city, the bar welcomes after work drinks or dinners before a show. The burger menu is seriously mouth watering, with totally homemade patties and sauces.
MEA CULPA3/175 PONSONBY RD
AUCKLAND
Ponsonby Roads Mea Culpa is the cocktail bar in Auckland without exaggeration. Styled as a New York hole in the wall venue, its intimate nature is perfect for the laid back banter that exudes from within the premises. Cocktails are king here and the best way to discover this is by asking Tim, barman and owner, to surprise you. Watch in amazement as he whips up a balanced and beautiful drink.
MOON BAR7 ST ANDREW ST
DUNEDIN
Moon Bar likes to think of itself as more than just a bar: its an experience. It has something for everyone, cocktails, beers and a cigar menu. Their happy hour gives you a great excuse to start the night off nice and early. Located above Angus Restaurant, you can saunter up the stairs after a nice meal and let your night lift off in style.

THE SEX LIVES OF SIAMESE TWINSIRVINE WELSH
NOVEL
Irvine Welsh has forever seared literature with his indelible brand of pulp Scottish writing, delving to the northern depths of lower class filth, chucking up and unglamorous view of how people go about their daily lives. What is really incredible is the way he conjures up humour so dark and strong enough to have you twitching on the floor with your eyes rolling back. His latest tale takes another stroll down the sociopathic boardwalk of life, following Lucy an unrepentant sadist. The novel looks at obsession in a world saturated in advertising, body-consciousness. True to the Welsh style, the book tests the readers capacity to stomach horrific events and dares them to continue feeling empathy for the twisted protagonist.
ROLLING STONES GEARANDY BABIUK AND
GREG PREVOST
This will be a must read for instrument enthusiasts as the entirety of the Rolling Stones music equipment is historically documented. This is also the story of the infamous band, told through the instruments that created their sound as it progressed from chiming blues to rock swagger. Marvel at Brian Jones Sitar and mourn as his influence from the band. Every song including outtakes is documented here, with heavy contribution from those involved at the time.
THE GOLDFINCHTARTT DONNA
NOVEL
Donna Tart, writer of cult classic The Secret History averages a book a decade, so needless to say a new addition to her oeuvre is always a cause for celebration. Coming from an avid fan, The Goldfinch may be her best yet, the Pulitzer prize winning novel spans the tragedy filled life of Theo following him from New York to Las Vegas to the gripping finale in Amsterdam. The novel is gritty in the extreme and an instant classic, filled with underworld crime and wild abuse.

BORN IN NEW Cross, England but now living in California, Gary Oldman is one of the most prolific and impressive actors working in Hollywood today. A grounding in theatre during the 70s primed him for breakout roles in 80s British films Sid And Nancy (in which he played punk-music icon Sid Vicious) and Prick Up Your Ears (in which he played writer Joe Orton), and the acclaim he received for both these performances was widespread and resounding.
Oldman made his first American film appearance supporting Sean Penn in 1990s State Of Grace, following up with an astonishing performance as Lee Harvey Oswald in Oliver Stones JFK a year later. The 90s established Oldman as Hollywoods go-to guy for crafting indelible villains, most notably as unhinged cop Stansfield in Luc Bessons 1994 hitman thriller Lon: The Professional. But there has always been an impressive variety to his work, even before he decided to move away from antagonistic parts he exhibits a much in-demand chameleonic talent that has seen him embracing different accents and voice registers (Russian in Air Force One, Texan in The Fifth Element, German in Immortal Beloved) as well as vastly varying appearances. More recently he proved utterly compelling as a man much older than his own age, British spy George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and he even embraced performance capture during
its earlier years alongside Jim Carrey in Robert Zemeckis A Christmas Carol.
Matt Reeves is just the latest in a long line of directors who have recruited Gary Oldman to bring their complex characters to vivid life, casting him in the role of belligerent human leader Dreyfus. On the face of it, it seems Reeves has lured Oldman back into an out-and-out villain role, but as Oldman would tell anyone, its not as simple as that. Oldman does not see Dreyfus as a bad guy, by any stretch of the imagination even his own vast one. Quite the opposite: hes a hero, Oldman insists
What are your memories of the original Planet Of The Apes movie? I was nine [when it was released]. I thought it was amazing. You know, that was part of the appeal [of doing Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes]. Culturally and subconsciously, what the franchise is, its my youth and something I grew up with. I remember these behind-the-scenes photos circulated and it was like Roddy McDowall sitting in a chair with a huge great big long cigarette holder. And they used to eat in the mirror because they couldnt touch the make-up. This was before VHS and making-ofs and all that kind of thing, and you saw these pictures circulate and I used to love that. So it was such a nice history to become part of. That first one is still terrific.
What else drew you to being involved in this latest Planet Of The Apes story? Before I had read a complete script I spoke with Matt [Reeves, director] and he sort of talked you through it, you know? What separates directors, and Ive worked with all sorts of directors, some famous and some not-so-famous, but theres always a point of view. Its sort of creative and collaborative but ultimately a director with a point of view is laser-beam focused on and he knows what movie hes making, he knows what he wants. I always thought Matt was a talent, ever since he appeared on the scene, and then when I spoke to him he had such a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve. Hes so into the real fabric of the people and the emotions. It was as if he was sort of talking about a drama and not an FX movie obviously its both and so I love that.
All of the Planet Of The Apes films have strong themes, political messages. What do you feel this one is saying politically? I mean, not to forget that the book [Pierre Boulles novel, on which the first film is based] is on a list of the Top 100 novels ever written. Youre already working from up there with HG Wells and Orwell and socially, politically its in that neighbourhood. But Dawn has an interesting theme because you see these gorillas these apes living in this Utopia, this paradise. And then we find out there are the humans they

discover each other. They each believe that the others have been wiped out. So can they co-exist? Can they live together? And its that old adage of that thing of we fear: others. That we have our own community. You know, can we all drink a coca-cola and teach the world to sing? No. I dont think thats ever gonna happen. And youve got now the possibility of real extinction of the human race. These apes are enviable in a sort of way because they dont need electricity in the same way that we do and without that were done.
This isnt a good versus evil story. Its more about clashing agendas, isnt it? Yeah, you sort of have these mirror images. Jason Clarke [as the human Malcolm] is almost counterpart to Caesar [Andy Serkis]. And my counterpart is Koba [Toby Kebbell]. And we both are coming from the same hurt place. Jasons character, hes more open. And my character, like Tobys character, is coming from this very injured place of loss. So youve got, without marching in with guns in that very classic way, these two communities that are just separately trying to hold on to their own existence.
Your character Dreyfus seems very much a man of action who actively blames the apes for their predicament. Hes in combat gear, wears a black shirt He appears a bit fascistic. But hes not. I think hes quite a heroic character. I guess you could call him the leader. Matt and I talked about what he may have done locally in the community
by locally I mean San Francisco. He was probably a policeman or something. So they are the sort of go-to people. Hes resourceful. Hes that sort of guy who is a designated leader. Theres no ego in that way. But hes got very personal baggage that he carries. And not all things are relative. We went through the epidemic and then the subsequent rioting and post-apocalyptic chaos. Then if you survived the disease and then youre immune to the disease and you survive the other stuff, I think why put that at risk? Thats where hes coming from.
How was it working with Andy Serkis, in all his performance-capture gear playing Caesar? Well, I dont get a lot of scenes with Andy. Im mainly based in the human camp, the compound. So I dont get to interact with the apes in the same way as Keri [Russell] and Jason, but the thing about it is, first of all, I would rather act with Andy in a grey leotard than if he were in make-up. Because in a sense its like a character in a costume, you know? Youre getting the emotion and youre getting the eyes, youre getting the whole thing. So he could be in a 19th century costume or he could be in a grey frogmans outfit.
There is that key scene you share with Andy, where Caesar arrives at the human settlement with his army. What was that like to shoot? Yes, Caesar says, Look, this is the apes home, this is the human home, we can live like this. I stayed on the steps of the compound, so its like being across a car park, and so I
couldnt really hear the dialogue. I could see it clearly enough, but I couldnt really hear it. I mean its Andy in a grey outfit on top of a ladder. Thats what I saw. On a stepladder. But one day its gonna be Caesar on a horse! You make these movies with just blind faith, you know? And it really is gonna be okay on the night. When the director says itll be all right on the night, you know [it will be].
Whats your take on Matts approach to the visual effects with this? Well, hes basically revolutionized the art form with this. What theyve achieved in this movie is in its own way as miraculous as [the achievement of] Alfonso Cuaron with Gravity. What hes done is hes taken motion capture and 3D onto location. And then used natural light, one source directional lighting, long lenses, all the things that you would use on a regular movie or a more conventional movie or a not heavy-FX film and applied it to this. So hes taken all those sort of old techniques and applied them to new technology. And Ive seen a cut of the movie with people running around in grey uniforms and pixels hardly rendered, and even in this condition I was totally lost in the story. I think hes done something very new here. And more than that, I said, I cant believe what Im watching. I mean they look like real gorillas! I dont know what they did since the last movie, but the technology has come on a hundredfold. DAN JOLIN
