WHO WE ARE Global China Connection (GCC), a registered non-profit organization, is the world's largest student-run network dedicated to improving relations between China and the rest of the world. GCC acts as a nonpartisan platform for students and professionals to develop their global networks of personal and professional relationships. Our management is located in New York and Beijing, but our network includes university chapters throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

OUR MISSION

To cultivate friendships and bridges between China and the international community by creating a global network of current and future leaders.

OUR VISION

To facilitate a future where connections with China define and strengthen the international community.

WHAT WE DO

Hosting conferences that promote discussion about China’s development is a focus of Global China Connection. In 2009, GCC hosted two conferences that brought together leading thinkers to share their knowledge and participate in the conversation about China's future. These forums based on issues such as the global financial crisis, sustainable development, political corruption, as well as relations between locals and multinational corporations.

IN JUST FOUR YEARS… Four years ago, GCC consisted of a few students from Columbia University and a handful of other universities in North America; today, our chapter network extends to over 60 universities across the globe. In 2007, we started as a small organization with a big dream. Today, we are building relationships that will change the world.

1ST CANADIAN CONFERENCE

“GROWING OPPORTUNITIES IN CHINA”

CONTEXT Canada has always been in a relatively warm relationship with China. Unfortunately notable gaps in cultural understanding are still very prevalent. Thus, it is our mission to bring the GCC objective to our great nation and cultivate friendships and bridges by creating a network of current and future leaders. Our conference will allow industry professionals to educate the minds of eager young Canadians with a hopeful eye toward the mystical Orient. With these newly acquired knowledge and freshly developed skills, we hope to facilitate an environment where students from top local and international universities may gain useful insights.

CONTENT Industry professionals and acclaimed academics from across Canada, China will convene in discussion panels that will foster a generation of more globally-conscious Canadian youths. These presentations will be attended by delegates from Queens University, McGill University, University of Western Ontario, University of Toronto, Wilfred Laurier University, and select American universities.

PANELS

TOPIC 1 FINANCE, TRADE AND ECONOMICS With uncertainties looming over global macroeconomics, many looked to China - a country with over 3 trillion dollars of foreign reserves and near 10% annual growth since 2008 to save the day. However, some argues that China is due to have a hard landing. This panel will examine the health of the Chinese economy, pegging of the Chinese Yuan, its impacts on international trade and effects on Chinese internal consumption. More, insights regarding the efficiencies of the Chinese equities market, relative lack of investment vehicles as well as transparencies of Chinese companies will be shared.

TOPIC 2 SOCIETY, BUSINESS AND GOVERNANCE China has long been perceived as a unique, promising and yet challenging business environmental for many western firms. To a large extent, the Chinese government acting through sets of comprehensive central policies controls the overall direction of the world’s second largest economy. It is therefore imperative for business leaders to understand the objectives and underlying drivers of governmental decisions. This panel will dissect the interplay between social forces, governmental policies and private sector demands. China’s balanced growth strategy – resolving social conflicts while maintaining economic growth will be examined. GCC CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE

In 2011, GCC hosted two conferences that brought together leading thinkers to share their knowledge and participate in the conversation about China's future. These forums featured panels and keynote speeches based on issues such as the global financial crisis, sustainable development, political corruption, as well as relations between locals and multinational corporations. Our more than fifty speakers have included professors, CEOs, economists, lawyers and social activists. Networking sessions allowed attendees to confer with speakers, make professional connections and build friendships with like-minded students.

CULTIVATING TOMORROW’S LEADERS On July 9, 2011, Global China Connection hosted "Cultivating Tomorrow’s Leaders,” the third annual Asia conference, in Beijing. The leading change-makers of Sino-Global relations were brought together to share their stories of personal growth and in particular, how they have overcome the subtle cultural differences that have profound impact in international trade. Over 400 student leaders representing China, United States, Europe, Latin America, and more engaged in the discussion.

CHINA ON THE GLOBAL STAGE More than four hundred attendees flocked to Columbia University's Roone Arledge Auditorium for the third annual U.S. conference, “China on the Global Stage” on March 20, 2011. Managing Director at Goldman Sachs James Li and KPMG Americas Partner Mark Barnes delivered keynote addresses. Other prominent speakers included Vice President of China Daily USA, Lyndon Cao; Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of New York and CEO of NewsChina, Fred Teng; The Wall Street Journal’s editor, Lingling Wei; Forbes Magazine Contributor, Gordon Chang; and Founder of The China Business Network, Janet Carmosky.
