Looking back over the past year,it was quite an eventful year forthe LGBT community.
Nationally we added Washington State,Maryland and New York andeven though Washington andMaryland are subject toreferendums in November thetide is turning. We had the firstsitting President, Barack Obama
coming out in support of samesex marriage. Locally the Mayor of Readingsigned on to a national list of Mayorssupporting same sex marriage. It was abanner year for celebrities coming out of thecloset. I have lived through enough history tofill a book,
The Vietnam War, the assassinations of JFK,Martin Luther King Jr. and RFK. I neverbelieved I would see the day I would bemarried to my husband, but I am. I nowknow I will see marriage Equality inAmerica. But we must not becomecomplacent, we must continue to come out,to be visible to stand up and be heard. Dont
leave it to someone else.Dont let us be pulled apartby fighting and bickeringwithin our own community, let us instead go forward
with one goal that of fullEquality for all members and
aspects of the LGBT community. Remember
it is through visibility that we bringunderstanding and acceptance. And it isthrough unity that we bring victory andEquality. We dont want to better than ourstraight brothers and sisters, we want to betheir equals. Let us celebrate our victoriesand our Pride in who we are, and let us goforth and spread the message that fullEquality is not for some but as guaranteedunder the constitution is for all. Have a greatPride and lets see what we have to celebrateat next years Reading Pride Celebration2013.

A note from your New Queen Whitley
Nycole DeAire
continued
There were two of us left, and we were called to the
front of the stage to find out the winner. That is whenI looked at my sister Roberta Baker and said, "Good
Lord doesn't this feel just like being in the Miss
Universe Pageant"? In an instant it was all over when
Eric Brown announced the Winner of Miss Reading
Pride Celebration 2012 is.........Whitley Nycole DeAire'
and your 1st Runner Up is Miss Roberta Baker.
During the crowning everything seemed to go in slow
motion for me being crowned and the tears of joy
were flowing in full force. That's when it hit me that I
must have won On Stage Question, which I havenever won before and was in
shock. I have been truly touched by winning this
title, not only for myself but for the community
in Reading, PA where I truly feel like I am at
home with family and true friends. After thepageant I packed up my outfits and headed back
to Lancaster, PA and slept for four hours before
I had to prepare for Lancaster PA Pride day.
That was my first actual appearance as Miss
Reading Pride Celebration 2012. On June 23rd I
was in a benefit show to raise money for Central
PA Pride. On this evening Miss Central PA Pride
2012 Jade DeVere, Mr Central PA Pride 2012
Big Daddy, Miss Lancaster PA Pride 2012 Visa
D'Kline, Mr Lancaster PA Pride 2012 AC Cortezand I bonded together to make a pack to help
each other in raising money for each of our
PRIDES. We all plan to have a very busy year
helping each other in many events, so you will
not only have me, but four other great
entertainers that will support our community. I
look forward to seeing you all on July 15th at
Reading Pride Celebration Day. Thank you for
your love and support, Miss Reading Pride
Celebration 2012 Whitley Nycole DeAire'

On Friday, June 1 of this year President Barack
Obama declared June as Gay Pride month. He
did that last year too. Pride month spills into July
as well. This year Reading Pride is Sunday, July
15 at Centre Park. Reading Pride is in July
because any town, not just Reading, doesnt want
its pride day to fall on the same pride day as a
neighboring city or town. This way Reading,Lancaster, Harrisburg, and Allentown can have
separate pride days without
competing with one another.
Being proud about being
LGBT is not about
competition, its about mutual
celebration.
Thats where I want to gowith thisPride and Celebration. If you dont
know this about me yet, I am a transgender
woman. There have been times when I have
had to reign in my enthusiasm for myself.
Sometimes I question if I am too out, loud,
and proud and then, you know, have to hold
back. Sometimes I have the excitement and
almost giddiness of the newly evangelized. Ill
shout it from the roof tops! Im me! Im free!
I am out, loud and proud and look forward
to the celebrations because for too many years
I was closeted. It felt as if I were kept in a
small dark room with very little room to move.
The locks that were used to keep me there
were shame, guilt, humiliation, bigotry, fear ofviolence, and the restrictive norms of a
homophobic and heterosexist world. I
internalized this. I was aware of my own
transphobia, which means I hated myself. One
day there was a panel of us on the Phil
Donahue Show. Im not alone! I didnt know
what transgender was. I have never heard the
word. Not that I heard it that day either. Some
may ask if I was living in the dark ages. Yes, Iwas.
I remember in the early
80s hearing about a
magazine called Tapestry.
It was by us, for us and
about us. Well, where do I
get this Tapestry? Most
likely you can buy it at the
gay book store or possibly at the adult book
store. Really?! Not Waldens or Daltons? No.
The gay book store in Philly or the adult book
storemaybe. Does that give a clue where we
were back then? (Continued Page 8)

This is the thirdyear that AllSouls Churchhas participatedin this importantevent.
As the pastor, Iwant to offer
many thanks to those individuals who haveworked so hard on this years Reading PrideCelebration. Thank you for your dedication.
Thank you for giving hours and hours of yourtime. Thank you for your commitment tofurther the cause of the GLBT community.Thank you for being both the standard bearerand the lightning rod.
Each year, it is no doubt a dauntingtask to plan, coordinate, andimplement this celebration.Lord knows the GLBTcommunity has LOTS of
opinions and thus there is nodoubt tension and strife may rearits ugly head. No doubt there aresome in our very own GLBT
community who, because of personal vendettas, who would rather see Reading Pride go underrather than help it succeed.
All Souls on the other hand stands committed, shoulder to shoulder, with Reading Pride. Weshare similar goals and similar dreams. We toowant to create a space where GLBT folks cangather without fear and without prejudice. Wewant to be a place where ones whole identity, whether that be gay, straight, bisexual, ortransgendered is not only embraced but
recognized as part of Gods great and wonderfuldiversity.
If you are celebrating with us atReading Pride, and you want tofind a church that will welcomeyouall of you, I hope you willconsider celebrating who youare with us. Look us up; wellhave a booth at Reading
Pride. Come check out our
worship. Among kindred spirits (gay, straight and in-between) you will be welcomedto receive all the blessings God seeks to impart.

The Crowning of Miss. Reading Pride 2012
(Continued from page 1)
It was thought by ordinary folk that beingtrans was some sort of sexual fetish and thatpresenting as female was some sort ofcompulsion or addiction. That we gotsomething out of it. Like wearing a dress
was the same as snuffing a line.
Being transgender is when the outer physicalbirth sex doesnt line up with the innersubconscious sex. This is one of those times
that you cannot change your mind. And so,at some point we become who we are. I am atransgender woman. I have been described astransgender femme. Ill proudly own that Iam proud of my femininity.
As Julia Serano, a trans woman herself, putsit in her book, Whipping Girl, there are a
number of personality traits that I findattractive in women: passion, creativity, senseof humor, and self-confidence. And it hasbeen my experience that trans women havethese qualities in full force. I find trans
women hot because we are anything butdocile or demure. In order to survive as atrans woman, you must be, by definition, impervious, unflinching, and tenacious.(p.278) In a trans womans eyes, I seesomeone who understands that, in a culturethats seemingly fueled on male homophobichysteria, choosing to be female and openlyexpressing ones femininity is not a sign offrivolousness, weakness, or passivity, it is afucking badge of courage. (p.280)
Oh Yes! Now Im giddy again. Im out, loud, and proud! And Im ready tocelebrate!
See you at Reading Pride!!
Category awards were handed out this nightas well. Roberta Baker won "interview","talent", and "evening gown". WhitleyNycole DeAire won "photogenic", and"couture/presentation". Whitley also wonthe category of "on stage question which
was not given out as an award but didfactor in, in winning the title. We'd alsolike to give an honorable mention to BiancaDeMonet, who was one point away from winningevening gown. Her gown and her were stunning. In3rd runner up \ for the title of Miss Reading PrideCelebration was Angie St.John LaMour. 2nd runner up
was Bianca DeMonet. Then there were two, MissRoberta Baker and Miss Whitley Nycole DeAire. Youcould cut the tension with a knife. Who would it be?
Then the announcement was made. Congratulations tothe new Miss Reading Pride Celebration 2012, Whitley
Nycole DeAire! Whitley broke down intears. I enjoy doing this event, it is mybaby. When I came up with this idea. I
never knew how hard, and how determinedthis drag queens, these Ladies" would workso hard for it. I said at one point to my co-
Chair that you would think they were fightingover a crown made of diamonds and gold. Iam so proud of all the ladies that tried out this
year and I look forward to next year.
