We are all part of this industry, whether we
identify with it or not...
There are over 80 billion garments produced each year. (Greenpeace)
The world clothing and textile industry (clothing, textiles, footwear and luxury goods) reached almost $2,560 trillion in 2010. (Global Textiles, Apparel & Luxury Goods)
The British Fashion Council estimated that in 2009 the UK fashion industry directly contributed £20.9 billion to the UK economy.
The Fashion Industry employs ONE SIXTH of the world’s population
Riddled with issues.....

Money + Open = Community Currency
Leander Bindewald nef (the new economics foundation)
nef (the new economics foundation) 2
This presentation has been produced by the New Economics Foundation as part of the Community Currencies in Action (CCIA) collaboration project. CCIA is a transnational partnership working to develop and deliver community currency demonstrations in several member states across the North West of Europe. CCIA will lead the way in sharing knowledge and best practice to enable communities throughout Europe to grow stronger in their ability to achieve vibrant and prosperous networks that are efficient in delivering social, economic and environmental outcomes. CCIA will design, develop and implement community currencies across NW Europe; providing a rigorously tested package of support structures to facilitate the development of CCs across NWE and promote CCs as a credible (policy) vehicle for achieving positive outcomes. CCIA is part funded through the INTERREG IVB North West Europe (NWE) Programme, which is a financial instrument of the European Union’s Cohesion Policy - Investing in Opportunities. Find out more about CCIA on our website: www.communitycurrenciesinaction.eu

6 BIG CHALLENGES
OPEN ! FREEHow do we fund / resource / support development without compromising it? Transparency is hard work! (Time scarcity leads to opacity)
STANDARDS, DOCUMENTATION &INFRASTRUCTURETools to allow much easier collaborative sharing of design files, supporting plural authorship and the semantic knowledge around each product. How to get sharing out of the inbox.(GitHub for stuff)
OPEN VENTURESAs well as open projects by communities of amateurs, what might open ventures be? How do you do open business?
LEGALLIABILITYWhen open software breaks, people lose time and money. When open hardware breaks, people lose limbs.(Uh oh.)
OPEN MARKETSHow do you host a peer-to-peer economy in each sector? We need to develop new kinds of regulation and governance to solve big problems. (Politics and ethics of open access)
LOWER THETHRESHOLDSOpen is not just shared & transparent. If we are going to be disruptive we also need to continuously design-down the practical social thresholds between us and wellbeing.(Time, Cost,
