THE ROOTS OF OUR FUTURE A history of excellence
The group has behind it the vast know-how of Fiat which began producing tractors, trucks, buses and industrial engines more than 100 years ago. The CNH and Iveco brands inherited a grand tradition of historic achievements and technological know-how. They have continued to build on that base and today, with their proven experience and innovative capacity, are among the global leaders in their respective sectors.
The Roots of Our FutureA history of excellence
Fiat Industrial began operations on the 1st of January 2011 following the demerger of the activities of Iveco, CNH and FPT Industrial from Fiat S.p.A.
This demerger gave life to an industrial and commercial enterprise (listed on the Milan Stock Exchange) with a clear strategic focus, financial solidity and the independence necessary to realise the maximum potential for its commercial vehicles, agricultural and construction equipment and industrial and marine powertrain businesses.
CNH is created on 12 November 1999 through the merger of New Holland N.V. and Case Corporation. Its history is linked to influential figures such as Giovanni Agnelli, Henry Ford, Cyrus McCormick, Alexandre Braud, David Brown, J.I. Case, Leon Claeys, and Werndl Josef who had the courage to initiate, experiment and innovate. As a result of a strong drive toward progress that characterized both Case and New Holland from the very beginning, the Group is now one of the global leaders in the agricultural and construction equipment segment.
Main milestones: 1999: CNH Global is established. 2000: CNH Global acquires 100% of Flexi-Coil Ltd., the Canadian agricultural equipment producer. Paolo Monferino is named President and CEO of CNH Global N.V. 2001: CNH Global, Kobe Steel Ltd. and Kobelco Construction Machinery join forces to create a global alliance for the development, production and sale of crawler excavators worldwide. 2002: CNH Global N.V. creates Fiat Kobelco Construction Machinery S.p.A. (Fiat Kobelco). 2005: in Europe and Latin America CNH reorganizes the non-Case construction equipment portfolio under a single brand: New Holland Construction. Harold Boyanovsky is named President and CEO of CNH Global N.V. 2006: Sergio Marchionne is appointed Chairman of the Board of CNH Global N.V. 2009: CNH is present in more than 170 countries worldwide through its network of some 11,600 dealers and distributors.2010: in April, Fiat announces plans to demerge its agricultural and construction equipment business (CNH), trucks and commercial vehicles business (Iveco) and the related powertrain activities. CNH, Iveco and the “Industrial & Marine” business line of FPT Powertrain Technologies are transferred to the newly established Fiat Industrial S.p.A., which is listed on Borsa Italiana. The demerger becomes effective on 1 January 2011.
CNH History
Iveco History In 1975, a great challenge to the market and competitors is launched, with the merger of five historic European companies – all founded in the late 19th century and specialized in the design and manufacture of commercial vehicles – to create Iveco.Backed by solid know-how, the new group represents the very best in technological innovation, capable of competing at the manufacturing and commercial level in both developed and emerging markets with a development strategy focused on respect for the environment. Over its 35-year history, Iveco has demonstrated its commitment to a global, multi-cultural approach.
1975-1984: integrating cultures, streamlining the product portfolio and optimizing manufacturing capacity: it is with this spirit that Iveco takes its first steps, immediately distinguishing itself for strong international focus in the commercial road transport sector. With 200 basic models and 600 versions in total, Iveco offers one of the most comprehensive ranges in Europe. 1985-1994: Iveco expands its boundaries, conquering new markets, setting up joint ventures, and establishing commercial agreements around the world. The Group also launches a new strategic initiative, named the Iveco Europe Project, which is aimed at optimizing industrial processes and improving productivity.1995-2004: Iveco launches several major new products in Europe – including engines, buses, trucks and light commercial vehicles. International expansion continues with new strategic joint ventures established in China. 2005-2010: Iveco celebrates its first 30 years. The company continues to expand internationally with several major agreements in countries with high growth potential, such as China.2010: in April, Fiat announces plans to demerge its agricultural and construction equipment business (CNH), trucks and commercial vehicles business (Iveco) and the related powertrain activities. CNH, Iveco and the “Industrial & Marine” business line of FPT Powertrain Technologies are transferred to the newly established Fiat Industrial S.p.A., which is listed on Borsa Italiana. The demerger becomes effective on 1 January 2011.
FPT Industrial History FPT Industrial heritage roots back in the first years of the last century. The first engine for trucks, called 24 HP as the 4 tons truck it equipped, was actually produced in 1903; the engine featured a displacement of 6370 cc and four cylinders. In 1918 the first engine for agricultural machines was produced ; it was a 20 HP, 3570 c.c. called 702, such as the tractor it was built to equip; both engines were gasoline-fuelled.In 1931, after engineering activities dating back to 1906, the 632N, first Fiat diesel engine, started being assembled on trucks. The Fiat unit dedicated to industrial engines was part of the so called “Fiat Veicoli Industriali” from 1929 until 1975, when it was incorporated in the newly-born Iveco. Meanwhile, in 1965, “Fiat Veicoli Industriali” acquired the Carraro brand, a company located in Milan specialized in the production of marine engines, and gave life to the Aifo brand. In the ‘80s, the Iveco-Aifo engines became very popular, conquering the most important offshore world championships. In 2004, the creation of Iveco Motors gave life to a sector dedicated to industrial (both on and off highway), marine and power generation applications. In 2005, the creation of FPT-Fiat Powertrain Technologies brought to the unification of all the powertrain activities carried on in the Fiat Group, from cars, to commercial vehicles, agricultural and construction machineries, marine and power generation applications. From 2005 to 2010 FPT developed state-of the-art technologies such as the revolutionary Multiar system, the second generation of Multijet, the DDCT transmission and the SCR. In April 2010, Fiat announced plans to demerge its agricultural and construction equipment business (CNH), trucks and commercial vehicles business (Iveco) and the related powertrain activities (FPT Industrial). CNH, Iveco and FPT Industrial were transferred to the newly established company, Fiat Industrial S.p.A.
