PROGRAMME NOTES

fle-iche-t nur, bet;rulrte Scha-t-ten Bach This secular, solo cantata for soprano with oboe obligato was

written around 1718-1723 for a wedding in Cothen, and is nicknamed the 11wedding cantata n.

Aria: We-iche-t nur, be-tTUb-te SchaZ-ten

Vanish now~ ye mournful shadows, frost and wind, be at rest; spring•s delight will grant the breast nothing but joyous prosperity as it brings the flowers forth.

Recitative: Die UJel-t unrd uneder neu

The world is renewed, in hill and valley the graces double in beauty, the day is free from cold.

Aria: Phoebus e-ilt; rrri-t schnellen Pferden

Phoebus hastens with swift steeds through the new-born world, and even he is so entranced that he too wants to be in love.

Recitative: Drum such-t a:uch amor se-in vergnugen

Then Cupid also seeks his pleasure when the purple meadows laugh, when the flowers in splendor are arrayed, and in his kingdom the lovely flowers do likewise fiery hearts conquer.

Aria: Wenn d-ie FrU.hZ.-ings luf-te s-trei.chen

When the spring breezes blow and caress the coloured fields, Cupid steals forth to find his treasure~ which, one believes, is one heart kissing another.

Recitative: Und d-ieses -is-t das Glucke

And this is good fortune that through a lofty gift two souls attain one treasure, to glow with much health and happiness.

Aria: Si.ch Uben ~m Li.eben

To train oneself in love, in lighthearted jests is better than spring's transitory desire. Here run waves laughing and watching the vi cto ri ous pa 1 ms on ips and breasts.

Recitative: So se-i das band der keuschen l-iebe

So let the bond of chaste love, betrothed pair, from fickleness and inconstancy be free; no sudden fall, nor thunder frighten your love.

Gavotte; Sehe-t -in zufri.edenhe-i-t

May you see in the pleasure of a thousand bright and prosperous days that soon in time to come your love will blossom.

Faur~ Lydia

Lydia your lovely golden hair flows upon your whit: shoulders, numberless'delights emanate from you. I love you, 0 Lyd1a! Give me back life that I may die forever.

Mai May, all in flower, calls us to the meadows and the endless

delights of spring. Let these wondrous things brighten the beauty of your face and the love in your heart!

Le Secre-t I wish the morning not to know the name I told the night. I wish

the sunset to forget the secret I told to the day, and carry away my love, in the folds of its pale garment.

Chanson d'Amour I love your eyes, I love your fac~. 0 my rebellious, my fierce one,

I love everything that makesdyo~ be~ut1ful, from your feet to your hair, 0 you to whom ascend all my es1res.

How Long in Torment Sighing Mozart This duet is from the third act of the M~ge of Figaro which was

premiered in Vienna in 1786. Count Almaviva is trying to convince Susanna, his wife's personal maid, to meet him in the garden that evening. Susanna agrees, but only to lead the Count into a trap to reveal to his wife, the countess, his unfaithfulness.

Here with our Hands Entwining

This duet is from the first act of Don Giovanni which was premiered in Prague in 1787. Don Giovanni attempts to seduce the country girl, Zerlina, who is hesitant at first, but weakens and agrees to leave her fiance, Masetto, and go off with the Don.

PUssreise (A Walk) Wolf

When I saunter through the woods with mY walking staff the birds and trees seem to come alive with sunrise. It is the way Adam might have felt in Paradise! Would that I could spend my whole life thus on such a perfect morning!

Verborgenhei~ (Concealment) Tempt me not 0 world again. Lure me not with joys that perish.

Let my heart unspoken cherish all its rapture, all its pain. Unknown grief consumes my days - only when dreaming does a ray of gladness light the gloom within my breast.

Gebet; (Prayer)

Lord, send what thou deem'st best, be it joy or grieving. I wait thy will. Not without measure give sadness or pleasure, all merciful Father, for in midway lies heart's pure treasure.

Lebe wohl (Farewell)

Fare thee well. Thou dost not know what it means, this word of sadness. Nought of pain thy face did show and thou bad'st me leave with gladness. Fare thee well! Oh times again to myself that word I've spoken, thirsting evennore for pain-- till at last mJ heart is broken.

; col ai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908)

Rimsky-Korsakov was one of the principle Russian nationalist composers and formed a link bet een the first generation of nationalists and the Russian composers of the early twentieth century. He left his early career in the navy and became active in Russia and abroad as a conductor and composer. His works are best known for their brilliant and imaginative orchestration.

Kolybelnaya pesnya (Lullaby from the opera 1 ~1ai d of Pskov•)

A mother, frightened because her husband will soon be home from war, is singing to her i 11 egi ti mate child. 11 Hush-a-bye my 1 i ttl e one, hush-a-bye, for the day is done. Nightingale, leave your nest and fly into our garden. You may peck at our berries, and when darkness falls we will enjoy your song. Hush-a-bye my little one, for the day is done. 11

Tikho vecher dbgorayet; (Golden shadows have descended)

Now that the sultry, hot air is growing cold-- go to sleep my child. The nightingale begins to sing announcing twilight and through the air, sounds are beginning to ring-- go to sleep my child. Angels• eyes are shining shyly by your face, and the breath of night is light and easy -- so go to sleep my darling child.

Plen~vsh~s' ~zoy~ solovey (The rose and the nightingale)

Captivated by the rose, the nightingale sings over her both day and night. The rose, however, listens in silence. On a lyre a young man sings to a sweet maiden. However, she doesn't know to whom he's singing his song of love or why his sorrowful song should make her cry.
