TRANSLATIONS

EXSULTATE, JUBILATE

Rejoice and be glad, ye blessed spirits, singing sweet song_s; . the heavens join with me, echomg your chant.

The friendly day is shining now that clouds and storms have fled; sudden calm has risen on the just. Da~k night reigned _all around; but now arise in gladness, ye who until now were afraid, and offer leaves and lilies with a generous hand, rejoicing in the happy dawn.

Thou crown of virgins, give us peace, and console our minds and our heavy hearts.

Alleluia.

SUL FIL D'UN SOFFIO ETESIO from Falstaff

On the breath of an etasian breeze scurry, agile shadows; among the branches a bluish-grey glow of the rising moon has appeared. Dance! And may the gentle steps measure a gentle sound, combining the magical dances with the song. Let us wander beneath the moon, choosing flower by flower; each crown of petals, in its heart, brings its good fortune. With the lilies and the violets let us write secret names: from our enchanted hands may words blossom .. . Words illuminated by pure silver and by gold .. . Magic incantations and magic charms. The fairies have, for letters of the alphabet, flowers.

AH! JE VEUX VIVRE from Romeo and Juliet

Ah! I want to live in the dream which still intoxicates me on this day! Gentle flame, I keep you in my soul as a treasure! This rapture of youth only lasts, alas, for a day. After that comes the hour when one weeps; the hean gives way to love, and happiness flies away, never to return! Ah! I want to live in the dream, which intoxicates me, for a long time still! Far from gloomy winter let me slumber and inhale the rose before shedding it of its petals. Ah! Gentle flame, stay in my soul as a sweet treasure for a long time still!

Selections from THE ITALIEJ\'ISHES LIEDERBUCH (Italian Songbook)

Aucb kleine Dinge (#1) Even small things may delight us, ev~n small things may be precious. Think how gladly we deck ourselves in pearls; for_much they are sold, and are only small. Thmk how small the olive is an~ yet it is sought for its virtue. Thmk only of the rose, how small it is, Yet smells so sweet, as you know.

Mein Liebster hat zu Tisches mich geladen (#25) My lover invited me to dine, but he had no house in which to receive me, no wood or hearth for boiling or baking, and the pots and pans had long ago broken. He had neither wine nor glasses, the table was tiny, and the tablecloth no better; the bread was as hard as stone and the knife blunt.

Du denkst mit einem Fadchen (#10) Do you think to capture me with a thread, with a single glance to make me fall in love? Ere now I have caught others who were circling higher; it would be better not to trust me, if you see me laughing. Ere now I have caught others, assuredly believe me. I am in love, but, as it happens, not with you.

Wie lange schon war immer mein Verlangen (#11) How long have I yearned to have a musician for a lover! Now God has granted me my wish and sent me one with a complexion of milk and roses. Here he comes now, so gentle or demeanor, bowing his head, and playing the violin.

Ich hab' in Penna einen Liebsten wohnen ( One of my lovers dwells in Penna and another on the plains of Maremma, another by the lovely harbour of Ancona, and the fourth in Viterbo. Another dwells yonder in Casentino, another lives here in my own town; I have yet another in Mangione, four in La Fratta, ten in Castiglione!

QUATRE CHANSONS DE JEUNESSE {Four songs of youth)

Pantomime Pierrot, who is nothing like Clitandre, Empties a flask without further ado, And, practical fellow, cuts into a pate. Cassandre, at the end of the path, Sheds a concealed tear over her disinherited nephew. That rascal Harlequin schemes The kidnap of Columbine and whirls about four times. Columbine is dreaming, surprised At sensing a heart caught on the breeze And at hearing voices in her heart.

Clair de lune (Moonlight) Your soul is a choice landscape

Paul Verlaine

Where charming masqueraders and dancers go about Playing the lute and dancing and are almost Sad beneath their whimsical disguises. While singing in the minor of Love triumphant and of the good life, They seem not to believe in their own happiness And their song is mixed and lost in the moonlight, In the calm moonlight, sad and beautiful, That makes the birds dream in the trees And the fountains sob in ecstasy, Those tall, slender fountains among the statues, Ah, calm moonlight, sad and beautiful.

Paul Verlaine

Pierrot The good Pierrot, whom the crowd watches, Having fmished at Harlequin's wedding, Wanders as in a dream along the Boulevarde d A young girl in a flimsy blouse In vain entices him with her scamp's eye; And meanwhile, mysterious and shiny Making him its dearest delight, The while moon with horns of a bull Casts a glance offstage at his friend Jean Gasp Debureau.

Theodore de

Apparition The moon was growing sad. Seraphim in tears Dreaming, bows in hand, in the calm of flower Vaporous were drawing from dying viols White sobs that slid upon the azure blue of the - It was the blessed day of your first kiss. My fantasy, which likes to torment me, Knowingly intoxicated itself in the scent of saC! Even without regret and without vexation, That sadness the gathering of a Dream leaves · heart that gathered it. I wandered about thus, my eye fixed on the w When with sunlight in your hair, in the street a evenmg, Before me laughing you appeared, and I thou saw a fairy With a halo of light who once, in my lovely dli spoiled child, Passed by, letting fall like snow from her half-hands · White bouquets of perfumed stars.
