NEW ZEALAND GARDEN,SAVILL GARDEN, WINDSORGREAT PARKThe New Zealand Garden, locatedin Windsor Great Park's Savill Gardenis the largest collection of nativeNew Zealand plants in the UK, andwas the design inspiration ofExterior Architecture's director,Sam Martin. It is home to about3000 plants in total, incorporatingmany rare and endangeredspecies such as MuehlenbeckiaAstonii (shrubby totoraro) andChordospartium Stevensonii(weeping broom) of which only afew hundred remain aroundMarlborough's Awatre valley area. The original garden, planted witha selection of New Zealand plantsgiven to the Queen during a visit in1986, had fallen into disrepair so adesign competition was launched.Sam's winning design took itsinspiration from the look and feelof the sub alpine tussock grasslandof central North Island and SouthIsland. As a recent visit back tothe park showed, the NZ gardenreally comes into its own in latesummer due to the abundanceof grasses, combined with rare andunusual shrub and sub-alpine treespecies. www.exteriorarchitecture.com
