Recent Office Events NEW ZEALAND GARDEN, SAVILL GARDEN, WINDSOR GREAT PARK The New Zealand Garden, located in Windsor Great Park's Savill Garden is the largest collection of native New Zealand plants in the UK, and was the design inspiration of Exterior Architecture's director, Sam Martin. It is home to about 3000 plants in total, incorporating many rare and endangered species such as Muehlenbeckia Astonii (shrubby totoraro) and Chordospartium Stevensonii (weeping broom) of which only a few hundred remain around Marlborough's Awatre valley area. The original garden, planted with a selection of New Zealand plants given to the Queen during a visit in 1986, had fallen into disrepair so a design competition was launched. Sam's winning design took its inspiration from the look and feel of the sub alpine tussock grassland of central North Island and South Island. As a recent visit back to the park showed, the NZ garden really comes into its own in late summer due to the abundance of grasses, combined with rare and unusual shrub and sub-alpine tree species. www.exteriorarchitecture.com PRIOR PARK LANDSCAPE GARDEN, SOMERSET. Members of the EA team went in search of inspiration to the Prior Park Landscape Gardens just outside Bath. Created from 1784 onwards by Bath Entrepreneur and philanthropist Ralph Allen, with advice from Alexander Pope, this 28 acre 18th century landscape garden lies in a sweeping valley with the stunning city of Bath set high on the surrounding hills, and is a great example of the English Landscape Movement. Of particular significance is the Palladian Bridge, allegedly one of only four in the world. Also the Serpentine Lake which features a Sham Bridge, giving the appearance to a pool of water of a bridge with a stream running beyond. Its definitely recommended as a place to visit.
