Changes in 18th Century Europe
World History: Mr. Nilsen
Europe changed radically in the 1800s.
These changes can be complex.
Learning about three forces will explain the changes in Europe.
Europe changed due to Nationalism.
Napoleon first harnessed the power of nationalism.
The French Revolution eliminated feudalism.
Napoleon replaced feudalism with nationalism.
The rest of Europe had to do the same to survive.
The Concert of Europe tried to control nationalism.
The Congress of Vienna set up a new system after Napoleon.
Countries used balance of power to prevent another Napoleon.
The Concert of Europe eventually collapsed under nationalist pressures.
Nationalism reached an extreme with Social Darwinism.
Charles Darwin developed the theory of natural selection.
“Survival of the Fittest” drives evolution.
Social Darwinism applies those
ideas to nations, too.
Europe changed due to Industrialization.
Industrialization began in Europe.
Industrialization spread from Britain to the rest of Europe.
The first industries affected were textiles and transportation.
Steam power and factories created major changes.
Industrialization caused great social changes.
Lots of people began movingto cities.
Public Health programs became much better.
Electricity began
to spread throughout
Europe.
Industrialization demanded much from nations.
Factories needed resources to run.
Businesses needed markets to sell.
Overseas empires solved both of these problems.
Europe (and the world) changed due to Imperialism.
Britain dominated the 1800s.
Britain had the world’s strongest navy.
Britain had the world’s strongest industry.
Other nations had to change to keep up with the British.
European powers first tried to divide Asia.
The British ruled India as a colony.
Japan had imperial ambitions, too.
Many nations tried to
divide China.
European powers then divided Africa.
Britain controlled most of the continent.
Belgium controlled a surprisingly large amount of the continent.
Other nations controlled the rest of Africa.
Europe changed radically in the 1800s.
These changes can be complex.
Learning about three forces will explain the changes in Europe.
