By now you will all have completedmost of your year's programs. My visitsto the sections have shown me a veryactive and healthy institute. We are notwithout problems or difficulties, butgenerally, I have been impressed by thewide range of activities I have encoun­tered. The hospitality I received wasfirst rate in all cases and I want to thankeveryone who contributed from oneend of the country to the other.

As you read this message many sec­tions will be preparing for general meet­ings, and elections for the sectionexecutives will be looming on thehorizon. Please consider that thestrength of the institute lies with theindividual members. If you feel youhave something to offer do not shy

While sec­tions prepare for year end, yournational executive and council arepreparing for the pre-conference coun­cil meeting in June. If you, as anindividual, or a section, have mattersthat council should consider, put themforward as items to be raised by yoursection council member. Much of thebusiness of CIFST is done through ourcommittees and executive. However,you as a member can and should beheard by council if there are issues tobe raised.

Mention of pre-conference councilreminds me of the annual conferencewhich will be held immediately after­wards. I will deal more fully with thisissue in my next message but for now

Suddenly, on December 17,1985.

Gwen was born in Mordenwhere she grew up on theexperimental farm. Shegraduated in Home Eco­nomics at the University ofManitoba in 1955. She wrotefor the Winnipeg Free Press,Winnipeg Tribune and theCountry Guide and acted asCOnsumer consultant with theFederal Department of Fisher­ies and then with the Depart­ment of Health and Welfare,Health Protection Branch.

Gwen served on the Boardof Governors of the Univer­sity of Manitoba and on theAlumni Executive. She wasactive in both the Provincialand National Home Eco­nomics Associations.

I would just like to remind you that the29th annual conference will be held inCalgary from June 29th to July 2nd. Theconference committee has been work­ing hard and a first-rate meeting awaitsall who make it to Calgary this year.Your conference committee has sparedno expense to have the Calgary Stam­pede immediately follow our confer­ence (July 4-13) and to have B.C. andVancouver stage a world class expo­sition.
