8:45 - 10 a.m. Making Energy conservation Pay for Itself:
What You Need to Know (M3)
Across Ohio, K-12 schools are making energy efficiency improvements and
using the cost savings to pay for construction. The Energy Conservation
Program, administered by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC),
gives districts the ability to borrow funds without added taxpayer expense.
With nearly 90% of a facility’s operational budget spent on lighting and
HVAC, these improvements can mean significant savings in utility costs.
Understanding the rules of this program can give designers and contractors
a competitive edge when working with school districts. This session shows
examples of the energy saving measures being successfully implemented.
Presenter: Ron Spangler, Energy Program Manager
(Ohio Facilities Construction Commission)
10:15 - 11:30 a.m. Maximizing IPD with the Right People,
Planning and Process (M4)
Successful teams need the right people - in the right place - at the right time.
With leadership from the owner, The Cleveland Clinic’s Lutheran Hospital
created a strong team for its emergency department expansion from the start.
With participation from the architect, engineer, CM, mechanical, electrical and
drywall sub-trades, this team quickly realized the benefits of early planning
and a visioning process to carry throughout the project. The team shares what
they learned, including who to involve when; and their metrics of success,
from budget and schedule to patient satisfaction.
Panelists: Doug Fischback, Senior Vice President (The Krill Company)
Armando Francisco, President (Lake Erie Electric)
Rocco Gallo, Principal (Karpinski Engineering)
Doug Lippus, Project Manager (Cleveland Clinic)
Michael Zambo, Principal (Bostwick Design Partnership)
10:15 - 11:30 a.m. computer Fraud, Hacking and Theft –
We’re All at Risk (M5)
Computer fraud, hacking and theft are real concerns and construction owners,
contractors, designers and suppliers are all at risk. It’s not just big companies
that are being affected – small firms in central Ohio have experienced
compromised data. Fortunately, there are preventive measures that can be
taken to mitigate the risks of a data- or security-related breach. This session
describes the most common IT risks that threaten organizations today, and
steps to take to detect, prevent, mitigate or avoid these risks, including cyber
insurance.
Presenters: Michael Dickson, Director of Business Technology Services
(GBQ Partners LLC)
Joe urquhart, Vice President
(Overmyer Hall Associates)
7:00 - 7:30 a.m. Registration and Networking Breakfast
7:30 - 8:30 a.m. construction’s Brighter Economic Forecast: Where Your Best Bets Will Be (Opening Session - G1)
The economic forecast for construction – a popular kick-off for the
Conference – details the improving market in Ohio. Sharing projections for
public and private work is Cliff Brewis, vice president of editorial operations
for Dodge Data & Analytics (formerly McGraw Hill Construction/Dodge).
Brewis examines how national economic influencers of construction will
drive types of projects and where those opportunities will be.
Presenter: cliff Brewis, Vice President of Operations
(Dodge Data & Analytics)
8:45 - 10 a.m. 4D Scheduling: A Step Beyond 3D Modeling(M1)
The construction industry has moved into a fourth dimension – 3D modeling
plus the addition of schedule = 4D Scheduling. Combining BIM with Critical Path
Method (CPM) scheduling software, 4D Scheduling enables design/construction
teams to visualize the entire duration of a series of events and display the
progress of construction activities through the lifetime of the project. American
Municipal Power (AMP) is using 4D Scheduling on several hydro-electric power
plants, and brings the entire team to discuss the process, the benefits, and how
it can be used for projects of all sizes.
Panelists: Pete crusse, Vice President (American Municipal Power, Inc.)
Doug Hartz, Operations Manager (The Ruhlin Company)
Don Mccarthy, President (McCarthy Consulting, LLC)
Jeff Snoke, Site Manager (American Municipal Power, Inc.)
cindy Stiffler, President (Rock Ridge Virtual Design Construction)
8:45 - 10 a.m. Working Safer by Design: Expanding Risk
Management to Risk Prevention (M2)
For several years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) has encouraged the prevention of incidents and injuries by smarter
design both of the construction site and the facility being built. TJ Lyons, a
safety professional at Gilbane Federal, describes the concept of “Prevention
through Design” (PtD) and provides examples of why this might be the biggest
advance in hazard elimination since the seat belt. Learn how PtD can move
contractors from management of hazards to hazard elimination – including
lifetime hazards for building owners and users.
Presenter: TJ Lyons, construction Safety Manager (Gilbane Federal)
Agenda and Program Descriptions
10:15 - 11:30 a.m. SMART® Technology Provides Smart
Savings and collaboration (M6)
With SMART® technology, users can share information and communicate
with colleagues in the next room, or halfway around the world. Businesses
using this tool see significant increases in productivity and reductions in
communication costs. Local design and construction firms join Advanced
Solutions Visual Collaboration Systems to show how they take meetings to
the next level. Messer Construction Co. and Moody Nolan, Inc. demonstrate
how they’ve adopted SMART® technology.
Presenters: Sara Brockert, Virtual construction Engineer
(Messer Construction Co.)
Allen Schaffer, Director of Sustainable Design
(Moody Nolan, Inc.)
Scott Wolslager, Product Manager
(Advanced Solutions Visual Collaboration Systems)
11:30 a.m. -12:45 p.m. Ohio’s Latest Initiative to Generate
the Next construction Workforce (Lunch Session - G2)
Recognizing the need to educate teachers, counselors, students and parents
about the industry, construction leaders approached local associations to
launch an Ohio-based initiative showcasing career opportunities in
construction. The result is BuildOhio.org, a construction careers website
created and funded by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Ohio,
the Ohio Contractors Association (OCA) and seven regional construction
associations. Representatives from AGC and OCA introduce the website and
discuss how it will allow any association, school or individual business to use
it for outreach and workforce recruitment efforts.
Presenters: Andrea Ashley, Vice President of Government Relations
(Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Ohio)
Parker Brown, Education Foundation Director
(Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Ohio)
John Igel, President (George J. Igel & Co., Inc.)
1:00 - 2:15 p.m. L3: Building a Lean Facility – Lean
Operations, Lean Design, Lean construction (A1)
At Akron Children’s Hospital, lean operations are part of the culture. So when
hospital leaders planning a new Tower Project learned about lean design
and construction, it was a logical choice to select these practices to drive the
delivery method. Members of the Akron Children’s Tower Team share lessons
learned on a collaborative project designed to deliver a new facility for the
best value, continue to provide family-centered care to the children and
families they serve, and not waste a dime during the process.
Panelists: Paul Becks, Project Manager
(Welty-Boldt Construction Managers)
Linda Gentile, VP construction and Support Services
(Akron Children’s Hospital)
clifford Greive, Director of construction
(Akron Children’s Hospital)

(Welty-Boldt Construction Managers)
Scott Radcliff, Architect (Hasenstab Architects, Inc.)
Margaret Zezulewicz, Medical Planner and Project Manager
(Hasenstab Architects, Inc.)
1:00 - 2:15 p.m. continuing the Workforce conversation:
Associations Share Ideas & Action (A2)
In any construction market the #1 issue is the lack of skilled tradespeople
and a shortage of candidates for all open positions. Local industry associations
describe their efforts in high school education, apprenticeship training, middle
school advocacy, scholarship programs and other efforts currently underway
to recruit the future workforce and develop construction’s current talent
pool.
Facilitator: Don Leach, Partner (Dinsmore & Shohl, LLP)
Panelists: Andrea Ashley, Vice President of Government Relations
(Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Ohio)
cathy Blackford, Executive Director
(The Builders Exchange (BX) of Central Ohio)
Barton Hacker, President & cEO
(Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC)
Central Ohio Chapter)
Terry Phillips, Executive Director
(Allied Construction Industries (ACI), Greater Cincinnati Area)
1:00 - 2:15 p.m. How the culture of Inefficiency is
Out-Foxing Energy-Efficient Design (A3)
Energy-efficient and green buildings continue to gain popularity. However, there
are many design and implementation deficiencies preventing achievement of
intended energy efficiency savings. Due to the complexity of modern building
systems and the detail required for their installation, efficiency features are
commonly implemented incorrectly – and the result is not meeting energy savings
goals. This session describes implementation flaws that prevent buildings from
achieving intended goals and corrective steps that can be taken to achieve energy
efficiency.
Presenter: Peter Klienhenz, Engineer (Go Sustainable Energy)

4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Networking and cocktailsMingle with Presenters and Guests for a De-brief on the Day
A vital part of any professional conference is networking: the “off-line”
conversations attendees have which help build and strengthen business
relationships. Stay for a reception when the sessions conclude to meet industry
decision-makers: owners and developers, architects and engineers, general and
subcontractors and suppliers of materials or professional services. There will
be much to discuss – and often the most powerful learning comes from fellow
Conference guests.
