Enacting Populism. On the transformation of myths
Enacting Populism is an on-going project on the possible re-lationships between art practices and the populist mediascape that connotes the current political zeitgeist of Europe.
This is the way in which the project is presented when I have to say, in a few words, what the curatorial research is about, that I have been working on for the last year. It is never easy to frame something that has begun to open up a space for critical reflec-tion without claiming to have arrived to any conclusion and per-haps to not reach one either. I think this discursive space that has been opened should address the imagery that informs our politi-cal choices, our involountary understanding of our contempo-rary democracies and their images. All this in a specific zeitgeist, when a growing disbelief towards politics has progressively ex-panded in the name of an affirmation of right wing populist dis-courses all over Europe. An ongoing phenomenon over the last

two decades, at least, that has attained a dominant position in the European scene after a slow appearance in several countries, in a typical climate of what has been defined as a post-political sce-nario. Namely, where consensus politics has replaced the former ideological agonistic space of democracy and consequently fuel-ling this lack of belief in democracy and in its possibilities1.
In fact, when political ideologies ceased to give shape to politi-cal agendas, with the end of the Cold War, the western parties started to progressively mirror this ending with the flattening of their positions in the public debate, beginning to respond only to a general capitalist discourse about a global market that need-ed to find its way. From that point the political action softened the natural agonism of democracy, thus creating a lack of op-posite and distinct political projects. This situation left space for a popular frustration to arise and a consequent articulation of it by demagogues, and by those who understood how the space of politics slowly moved from being representative to openly playing with its representation in the media. Yves Citton, in this regard, described populism as a “valuable ability to connect with the feelings and perceptions experienced by (large segments of) the people”, and he defines it so in opposition to demagogy. He also speaks about the importance of the affective element, intro-ducing in the debate a key concept to understand how each of us is moved by a variety of collective movements”2.
So, if the populist zeitgeist we are experiencing in Europe seems to belong only to right wing parties – making the current pop-ulism one with conservative and xenophobic discourses – the concept in itself is not ascribable just to this genealogy. Ernesto Laclau was one of the first to acknowledge to populism a di-mension inherent to any democratic regime, looking at it through a historical perspective and not just as a right wing party phenomenon. ≥ 23

Enacting Populism.

“Le Président” is a turbo movie. The Italian collective understands cinema as a means without an end and thus creates turbo-movies with low budgets and altering the linear logic of cinema production, creating a system where the condi-tions and possibilities of cinema are constantly multiplying. “Le Président”, commissioned for "En-acting Populism", is created around the saturated mediascape of the 2012 French presidential elections campaign, and it follows the life of a candidate and the rise and fall of his populist and popular campaign – in a filmic structure positioned between an Mtv video clip and a Brechtian play.

translation of two short stories by Alfian Sa'at set in present-day Singapore. The characters in each story find themsleves in situations that offer them a ticket to hope and change. This element enters in a dialogue with the idea of "change" enacted by many populist discours-es. These often portray individu-alistic trajectories as a collective project that can apply to that empty signifier that 'the people' represents in the different contexts. Parallel to these fictional stories, there is the one of the author that perfectly embeds the Singaporean post colo-nial context, where the issue of the language is detached from a nation-alistic discourse. The writer, who wrote this book when he was 21, comes from a multicultural family – with a Malay father and Chinese mother – and in Singapore compul-sorily learns only English as a first language, with his "mother tongue", Malay, displaced as a second, and Mandarin being completely out of the picture: language is here a set of rules for generating speech, more than a set of limitations that defines an identity.* The performance will take place only on the
16th and on the 17th of February.

Luigi Coppola: On the Social Metamorphosisperformance and video, 2012
Coppola presents a new work sprung from a collaboration with the Belgian economist and antro-pologist Paul Jorion. Starting from a section of the famous blog of the latter, the two have worked on a text that gathers the propositions written by visitors of the blog, that collectively participated in the crea-tion of a “realist utopia” – as the title of the section recites. Here the users were invited by Jorion himself to suggest their own ideas about the economical crisis and the subse-quent crisis of democracy. Coppola stages this new script through the structure of the classical greek choir, so as to articulate a parallel-ism of demands and propositions around the issues raised in the text. While the figure of the hero/leader is absent, the voice of the choir, here interpreting the so-called "people", is empowered by the use of neutral masks.* The performance will take place on the
18th of February at Mains d'Oeuvres.

d'Oeuvres.

The equation between populist discourse and the hope for change from the people has led in Europe, to a rising consensus of the right wing parties. Here, Correale cre-ates a detournement of this phe-nomenon through a scratch-off lottery, through free distribution in the city of Antwerp. On these tickets familiar and recurrent xeno-phobic slogans are hidden behind the silver layer that is scratched-off to find a big "win" and so a change in life. The articulation of hope in politicians discourse is also the subject of “Untitled”, where, in collaboration with a famous Indian palm reader, the artist attempts to deepen the understanding of the hands belonging to politicians that

The film "Robbery" links the looting during the social unrest in Britain in August 2011 with the looting of state coffers to save the banks and the economy by the governments of many countries since 2008. This looting enabled banks to be saved and for managers and stockhold-ers to be paid dividends and bo-nuses; however, the states’ bailouts caused increased budget deficits and resulted in austerity measures for the 99% – which contributes to increased social inequality. The looting of shops by impoverished youth (night time robbery) is there-fore causally connected with the looting of state coffers and the dismantling of social security sys-tems by the ruling elites (daytime robbery).

A light sign outside the exhibition space subverts a prohibition street sign to introduce the several ac-tions of subversions that take place inside the exhibition, through a series of documents and a referen-dum proposal. How can a political action be effective on that very common space that is immobilized by the fixed grid of private prop-erty? A series of actions, spanning from the rent of an acre of land in Africa, to save it from the process of "land grabbing", to a referendum of popular initiative, compose this multi layered piece that puts into question the existence of private property.

Pour Anna Scalfi Eghenter (née en 1965, vit

Jonas Staal: Art, Property of Politics III. Closed Architectureinstallation, 2011
Jonas Staal proposes an installa-tion based upon research of the 344-page MA thesis written by Fleur Agema and titled “Closed Architecture”. The paper is writ-ten by the second hand person of Geert Wilderds' Freedom Party, and it concerns an ambitious model for a new prison that focuses on the reconditioning of prisoners by means of four phases. Staal's work is developed through a book, a plan and a 3d virtual tour in the social imagery of a current minister of the State of the Netherlands. Through this meticolous work by the artist the perspectives on political and ar-chitectural planning of a new right wing populist class of politicians is revealed and exposed through an analytic display.
Jonas Staal (born 1981, lives and works in Rot-
terdam) is a visual artist whose work includes
interventions in public spaces, exhibitions,
lectures and publications. He interprets de-
mocracy – democratism – as a Gesamtkunst-
werk (total work of art) from a Beuysian

Superflex: "Corruption Contract"handwritten document, 2009
The "Corruption Contract" aims to threaten the stability and security of society, to undermine the insti-tutions and values of democracy, ethical values and justice, and jeopardize sustainable develop-ment and the rule of law. By signing the contract, the client agrees to actively be involved in, or solicit others to be involved in corrup-tion activities during the contract period. The wording as well as the definition of corruption is based on the text of the United Nations Convention against Corruption. In the frame of "Enacting Populism" the contract seems to blink at the fact that the majority of the con-temporary politicians come from the business world and seldomly from a classical formation within a political party.
SUPERFLEX (created in 1993, live and work
in Copenhagen) is an artists' group founded
in 1993 by Jakob Fenger, Rasmus Nielsen and
Bjørnstjerne Christiansen. They describe
their projects as tools. A "tool" is a model
or proposal that can actively be used and
further utilized and modified by the user.
SUPERFLEX’ interventions are influenced by
Staal a

Understood in a polar system, together with institutionalism as its counterpart, populism and its antagonistic dynamic can sure-ly lead to the dissolution of the social community if they are the only protagonists in the public discourse.
But at the same time “democratic politics requires the construc-tion of a ‘people’ on the basis of one or more empty signifiers as well as an antagonism between ‘us’ and ‘them’” – states Laclau3. So, the visual strategies that take place on a daily basis in the media sphere, on a purely visual level, in order to create alterna-tive, cheap and fictional feelings of belonging, or rather in order to ‘construct’ that empty signifier that is ‘the people’, might not only be seen as a completely negative production of our times. They can also be seen as materials that can be easily decon-structed, so as to offer clearer visions on how democracy looks like in our times. The process of enacting populism, to make the aesthetic strategies embedded in the creation of a consensus vis-ible and apparent, comes together with interferences put at play with the mediascape in which the artistic projects find new po-tentialities to impact the contemporary imagery on politics.
Enacting Populism started towards the end of 2010, in the form of an artists residency (AIR Antwerpen) and as an artist’s panel discussion (Extra City, Antwerp). I thought that symbolically Antwerp was the right place to kick off such a project. Back in 2004 in Antwerp the Vlaams Balang4 was voted the most suc-cessful radical right-wing populist parties in Europe as a whole. In such an epitome of European populism I fully developed the idea of enactment, that granted in its concept that double layer that keeps the representative and the proactive sides of the artis-tic work together.
The project is now being developed into an exhibition at Kadist Art Foundation during the last two months of the presidential
elections campaign in France. The exhibition space is here interpreted as a sui generis political bureau in its appearance, immersing the show in an ambivalent space where the works can be seen as part of a contemporary art exhibition, as well as ele-ments belonging to a political party office where a campaign is being prepared.
Paraphrasing the title of an essay by Martha Rosler, written in 1975, titled “For an Art Against the Mythology of Everyday Life”5, with Enacting Populism I would affirm that we are in need of new, positive and emancipatory myths, as Yves Citton states6. It is this approach to artistic practices, I believe, that can represent an escapism or an action against the negative mytholo-gies that surrounds us, and to which we usually refer to as ‘populism’, in a quite simplistic way, failing to understand how this term is more broadly representative of the contemporary condition of the political sphere and of its manifestation.
