Drawing on her experience as a Tibetan Buddhist nun, turned mother, who became a best-selling author and world-renowned Buddhist teacher, Lama Tsultrim Allione offers a guide to access a previously forbidden aspect of the feminine: the fierce wise Dakini, whose juicy potency is needed to meet the gale force winds of the current world situation. This is a dynamic spiritual model based on 1000-year-old tradition coming from Tibet. Through the Dakini Mandala, a universal template of wholeness, each of the five Dakinis transforms an emotional pattern into wisdom, giving us a practical method that enables us to find strength and wholeness within, empowering us to become effective agents of transformation and wisdom in our world. The book will also contain 16 color plates and 50 gray scale images.

This book offers the personal work that will help women (and anyone else interested) respond with greater wisdom and effectiveness to the distress, challenges, and chaos of our global reality. It is a guide to being better able to engage the world with our full potent strength that is free of aggression, to tap into genuine unconditioned feminine power that is grounded in wholeness, and to invite a fresh partnership with the authentic masculine. The journey into the mandala gives birth to a renewed expression of feminine that draws on ancient wisdom, but is tailored for this time and place.

“We will see that the female body, manifesting as the dakini, is a potential vehicle for enlighten-ment. The Mandala of the Five Dakinis is a doorway with deep, profound roots that are timeless and inclusive. It is a practice that can help you meet the challenges of everyday life—when you feel scattered and pulled in many directions at once, when you need centering, when you have a decision to make, when you feel hopeless or stuck—by entering the mandala and meeting the dakinis within, you will access deep clarity and power.”

— Lama Tsultrim Allione

“Lama Tsultrim Allione has had a great devotion toward the teachings of Chöd for a long time. She has been doing a lot of work to preserve and maintain the continuity of the teachings and practice of Chöd, and she has a very pure heart motivation in doing this, which I deeply rejoice in.”

— His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, Orgyen Trinley Dorje

ABOUT LAMA TSULTRIM ALLIONELama Tsultrim Allione, author and international teacher, co-founded Tara Mandala with her late husband, David Petit, in 1993. While living in the Himalayas in the 1970s, she was inspired by the vision of creating a retreat center in the West. She was ordained as a Tibetan nun in 1970 at the age of 22 by His Holiness the 16th Karmapa. At the age of 26, after four years as a nun, she returned her monastic vows, then married and raised a family of three children. While raising her children she earned a Master’s degree in Buddhist Studies and Women’s Studies from Antioch University. Author of Women of Wisdom, a groundbreaking book on the lives of great Tibetan women practitioners, Lama Tsultrim also authored the National Best Seller, Feeding Your Demons: Ancient Wisdom for Resolving Inner Conflict, now translated into 17 languages. Feeding Your Demons presents Lama Tsultrim’s pioneering technique based on Chöd, using five steps to nurture the parts of ourselves we usually fight against. Numerous audio programs, DVDs, and magazine articles have been produced about her life and work, including Feeding Your Demons: The Life and Work of Lama Tsultrim Allione, a one-hour documentary by Jaap Verhoeven produced by Dutch TV.

For many years, she has focused on the teachings from the lineage of Machig Labdrön, the 11th century Tibetan yogini who founded the Chöd lineage. In 2007 while traveling in Tibet, Lama Tsultrim was recognized as an emanation of Machig Labdrön by the resident lama at Machig Labdrön’s monastery in Tibet, Zangri Khamar. In 2012 she was given the Machig empowerment by H.H. the 17th Karmapa at Chang Chub Jong in India.

In 2009, Lama Tsultrim Allione was selected by an esteemed committee of scholars and practitioners to receive the international “Outstanding Woman in Buddhism” Award given in Bangkok, Thailand. Her teaching inspiration comes from her sublime Tibetan lamas and her experience as a Western woman and a mother. She is now enjoying being the grandmother of six and has completed her new book, Wisdom Rising: Journey into the Mandala of the Empowered Feminine, to be published by Simon & Schuster in May 2018. At the same time, Lama Tsultrim continues to guide Tara Mandala and thousands of students around the world.

Tara Mandala was established 24 years ago by Lama Tsultrim Allione and her late husband, David Petit, to foster the development of innate wisdom for the benefit of all beings. We are a vibrant international Buddhist Community with groups around the world. The heart of the community is the 700-acre retreat center in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, home to the deepest mineral hot springs in the world.

We offer a complete path of meditation practice, study, and deep retreat in the tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism. We have established two practice paths focused on the teachings of Machig Labdrön, the 11th century Tibetan yogini who founded the tradition of Chöd: Magyu: The Mother Lineage (see page 15) and Gateway (see page 18).

Check out this year’s retreats with well-known international teachers such as Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, Shiva Rea, Chagdud Khadro, Dr. Robert Svoboda, and Drubpön Lama Karma. We also offer traditional Buddhist training through our residential Living Dharma Volunteer (LDV) Program that runs throughout the year (page 39), and we have many vibrant satellite sanghas around the world (see page 48).

Come experience the beauty and refuge of Tara Mandala. We are dedicated to fostering a welcoming atmosphere for all people to explore the teachings of the Buddha, and we are committed to cultivating a community that values diversity.

LOPÖN CHARLOTTE ROTTERDAMWhat do you learn by teaching?Having the opportunity to teach is a profound gift. Teaching is a continuous invitation to be fully present, drawing on all that I have received from my teachers and learned from life. It calls me to awaken to the natural wisdom that arises between us. Teaching has made me a better student, a more dedicated practitioner. I have learned to love the “living questions,” those we never answer once and for all but which unfold with each new conversation, contemplation, and experience.

MEET OUR AUTHORIZED TEACHERSTEACHING AT TARA MANDALA IN 2018Our Tara Mandala Authorized Teachers study intimately with Lama Tsultrim Allione, apprenticing with her for years before becoming teachers. We are pleased to highlight the amazing Authorized Teachers who will be offering retreats this year:

See all Tara Mandala retreats on pages 22 - 32. Find all teacher biographies on pages 33 - 36, and find a full list of Authorized Teachers on page 38.

KARLA JACKSON-BREWERWhat are you focusing on teaching now?My focus is now on the Mandala of the Five Wisdom Dakinis. I enjoy sharing this practice to help people see how the wisdom of these beings can transform emotional blocks & struggles in their lives. Having access to a practice that can offer immediate relief from suffering, and supports the experience of the ground of being, truly benefits all beings.

PIETER OOSTHUIZENWhat do you learn by teaching?I like that this question points to the fact that teaching is very much about learning. To me teaching is certainly a practice: the deeper engagement with the material (Dharma!); the relaxed, surrendered attentiveness; and the basic altruistic posture of sharing or pointing out that which is hopefully helpful to others. It has provided me with supreme opportunities to work with ego, humility, and even humiliation!

POLLY RYANWhat do you learn by teaching?A wise colleague told me that a teacher teaches from the depths of her own meditation experience. Teaching is an opportunity to join fellow practitioners in experiencing the nature of mind through skillful means transmitted to us by Lama Tsultrim and other great masters. Teaching others deepens Bodhichitta and the realization of interconnectivity. My practice gives me the wisdom to guide others, and guiding others enriches my practice, in an interdependent web of love and compassion. Teaching others, I learn to be a better student.

LOPÖN CHANDRA EASTONWhat brought you to teaching? I wanted to devote my life to Dharma, and teaching allowed me to do that; it allowed me to make Dharma a ‘full-time job’ rather than a hobby. Teaching is also a wonderful way to continue to learn, to find new ways to understand, integrate, and share. Teaching Dharma is a profound gift, for both teacher and student. Giving the gift of the Dharma is one way I can have a meaningful life of service to others.

Tara Mandala was remarkably fortunate to welcome Drubpön Lama Karma and his wife, Khandro Tsering Drolkar, when they arrived from Bhutan on July 9, 2017. Lama Tsultrim met Lama Karma at a Drubchen presided over by Tulku Sang-ngag Rinpoche in Siliguri, India, in January of 2016. She was deeply impressed by his meditative presence and his over 16 years of solitary retreat. Recognizing the auspicious interconnection, with Tulku Sang-ngag’s blessings, she invited him and Khandro Tsering Drolkar, who also has a background of deep practice and knows all of the 30 melodies of the Rinchen Trengwa (Garland of Jewels), to reside and teach at Tara Mandala.

Since their arrival for the Chöd Conference, Lama Karma and Khandro Drolkar have been giving wonderful teachings to retreatants and residents. In 2018, they will teach two retreats on the Rinchen Trengwa, a collection of Machig Labdrön’s oral teachings. The first retreat will be from April 21 - May 6 and the second from December 7 - 22. Those who attend these teachings will be able to return to Bhutan for further training at Druk Zangri Khamar. Lama Karma will also be teaching several other retreats throughout the year; he will share his extensive knowledge of how to do practice and long-term retreat in the Dzogchen (Great Perfection) and other yogic traditions of Tibet and Bhutan. We hope you have a chance to benefit from the presence of Drubpön Lama Karma and Khandro Tsering Drolkar.

She is also a member of the Magyu Program at Tara Mandala.

“I am deeply honored and excited about this new opportunity and the ensuing transition in my life. I have long had the goal to

integrate my work and practice in a more direct way. Living and working at Tara Mandala is the perfect opportunity! I look forward

MAGYU: THE MOTHER LINEAGE

IntroductionThe 11th century teacher Machig Labdrön developed several different lineages during her lifetime, including one called the Magyu, the Mother Lineage. This lineage was unique to her as many of the practices came through her meditation experiences with direct transmissions from deities. Both men and women held these lineages. Machig’s second son, Tönyöm Samdrub, was the main lineage holder of her Mother Lineage. At Tara Mandala, Lama Tsultrim has been inspired to follow this model by introducing Magyu: the Mother Lineage Program.

Magyu has an open structure—students work their way through the retreats and practice commitments according to their own timing. This allows flexibility for having a baby, an illness, or some other life-changing situation. This open, more flexible structure also allows those with available time to move ahead more quickly. You may join the Magyu path at anytime, once you have completed the application process and have been accepted. Magyu offers a living connection with the supportive Magyu sangha of practitioners, which has its own Facebook page, regular tele- and web-casts, and a buddy system; a personal Kalyanamitra (spiritual friend/mentor) helps guide your path of practice.

Magyu UpdateThe Magyu community continues to grow, with new members joining from around the world every month. We are business leaders, mothers, long-time Dharma practitioners, retired engineers, beginning meditators, teachers, artists…drawn together to integrate a path of deep practice with the calls of everyday life.

Tara Mandala is growing its online offerings, making Magyu path teachings and practices available at all times of the year and accessible anywhere. These are helpful stepping stones to the deeply enriching land retreats at Tara Mandala or with Tara Mandala sanghas in the US and abroad.

This past year we began offering monthly and bi-monthly telecasts or webcasts with Lopön Chandra and Lopön Charlotte, in addition to the bi-annual webcasts with Lama Tsultrim. Magyu participants send in a spectrum of engaging questions, from detailed requests for clarification on specific practices to broad inquiries into core Dharmic teachings. Our virtual connection will also allow us to have more regular Magyu “council” calls in which members can share their experiences, insights and reflections. The Magyu Facebook page has developed as a helpful platform for Dharmic community-building.

We look forward to deepening our path together and welcoming our new Dharma sisters and brothers in the year ahead.

MAGYU TESTIMONIALS

“Magyu has allowed me to bring rich Dharma teachings and practices into my life. It has given me the ability and confidence to work with every-day challenges and past traumas, which is beneficial to me and the people around me. The opportunity to learn from a revered teacher and integrate it into my daily life has been such a great gift. I’m so grateful for the com-munity and the retreat center itself, which is a beautiful and powerful place to retreat.”

— Maureen Rakel, Mother and Retired Software Engineer

“The Magyu program continues to respond to my longing for a way home through the sacred feminine by providing a rich treasury of wisdom and skillful means for the journey. This path supports opening in the way of lotus petals that, nourished from murky depths, gradually unfold in sky’s light. Mother Lineage dances me in and out of time, and challenges and overturns perception. The rigor and relaxation of practice invite space, release ingrained patterning, and quicken the transformation of mind and heart.”

— Mary Flowers, Teacher of English Learners, Elementary Level, Mindfulness Teacher

“The Magyu path has created an oasis in my life. I feel I am on a journey that is both deeply personal and well supported by a community that em-bodies and celebrates feminine wisdom. I am so grateful.”

GATEWAY PROGRAMA Study & Practice Program for the Dedicated Practitioner in the Terma Cycle of Dzinpa Rangdröl ‘Self Liberation of Clinging’ from Do Khyentse Yeshe Dorje

Gateway UpdateNow in its fifth year, the Gateway Program continues to deepen with practitioners entering into the profound practices of Dzogchen. This year the “Tigers” will be completing their Ngondro (Preliminaries), the “Garudas” will focus on the deity yoga of Tröma, and the “Completes” will practice the final phase of Rushen, called Semjong (Mind Training), Dzogchen preliminaries. This year, our White Dakini Drubchen allowed us the opportunity to “come of age” as a strong, collaborative community. It was the first time we held it on our own, without Khenpo Ugyen and Tulku Sang-ngag Rinpoche. They were missed deeply, but we rose to the challenge and accomplished the 10-day sadhana with a motivated community that heightened its capacity for teamwork and encouragement. The feedback received from longtime participants was glowing. We are grateful to have accomplished it without a hitch! Gateway provides an opportunity for practitioners around the world, with diverse backgrounds and circumstances, to be a part of a program that gives structure and momentum to their dharma practice. Each cohort becomes a dharma family, inspiring and supporting each other on the path. A new cohort will begin in 2019. You can learn more at: www.taramandala.org/about/gateway/.

IntroductionThis ten-year program is for dedicated practitioners who cannot do long-term retreat but who wish to live a life imbued with intense practice. The curriculum consists of all the practices done in the traditional Vajrayana three-year solitary retreat but is adapted for the modern practitioner living in the world. This lineage is being established at Tara Mandala through the kind guidance and blessings of Tulku Sang-ngag Rinpoche, who received this cycle from his teacher, the great Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

The focus of this program is the Dzinpa Rangdröl (Self Liberation of Clinging) cycle of teachings that Machig Labdrön revealed to Do Khyentse Yeshe Dorje (1800-1866). It is an extremely unique lineage as it combines the teachings of Machig Labdrön with the Dzogchen (Great Perfection) teachings. Among the many precious practices this cycle contains are three Chöd practices, the White Dakini and Tröma (two deities, or yidams, connected to Chöd), and the Trekchö and Tögal teachings that are unique to Dzogchen.

The Gateway Program is divided into two parts:The Foundation program spans the first three years and consists of the Preliminary Practices (Ngöndro) and Parchangma Chöd. The next Foundation Ngöndro group will start in the Summer of 2019.

The Complete Transmission program spans seven years and is for those who have completed the Foundation program or have completed another Ngöndro plus ten percent of the Dzinpa Rangdröl Ngöndro. This program consists of the two yidam practices (White Dakini and Tröma), Tsalung (Tibetan Yoga including Tummo), Dzogchen preliminaries, and finally Dzogchen (Trekchö: Cutting Through and Tögal: Leap Over).

GATEWAY TESTIMONIALS“I have participated in the Gateway program for five years now. It has profoundly changed my life. Being given access to these precious teachings in a structured and progressive format has been a great gift. Having the support of sangha, teachers and, of course, Lama la…well…there are no words. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to participate.”

— L. Treasure, Sign Language Interpreter

“By committing myself to practice for two hours a day, I started on a path that has activated a REAL process of stripping away what’s false in my life. The commitment has necessitated a lot of distraction falling away, and the outcome is a reorientation of my value system and my way of being in the world. Seven years into the practices, I feel a great deal of inner simplification and clarity. I am constantly touched by the deep psychological wisdom in these ancient processes and the way each step catalyzes the next layer to open. The feedback that comes from life in the world becomes part of this dialogue. During my time in the program, I have experienced deeply disorientating personal tragedy and loss, but I was able to relax into the groundlessness by staying with the process and through the support of Lama and the sangha. In this way it became a doorway to understanding the true groundless state of awareness.”

Retreat Fee, Lodging & Meals: Double $2,240 Queen Shared $2,944 Queen Single $3,744 Temple Camping & Commuting $1,120 Suggested Dana $480 - $640

The retreat will begin with an empowerment of the Queen of Great Bliss Yeshe Tsogyal Wisdom Dakini from the Longchen Nyingthig Dzogchen treasure cycle revealed by Jigme Lingpa (1729-1798). In this practice the entire pure universe of the hundred peaceful and wrathful Dzogchen deities arises within the primordial wisdom dakini Yeshe Tsogyal. With this as the basis for the retreat, we will then invoke the primordial wisdom aspects of each of the twenty-one Tara goddesses, three each day, over the course of the next week. This will culminate in a great feast celebration, in which we will seamlessly weave together all the blessings and power of the primordial wisdom dakinis and the twenty-one Tara goddesses into one mandala, partaking together in the consecrated substances of accomplishment.

Open to all

This is the first of two retreats this year that will cover the entire transmission of the Garland of Jewels (Rinchen Trengwa), one of the greatest and oldest living oral lineages of Machig Labdrön’s Chöd practice. Drubpön Lama Karma will begin by giving the Garland of Jewels empowerment, followed by transmissions of and teachings on the extensive sadhana practice of the Garland of Jewels itself. This will be combined with training in the sacred rhythms and melodies under the guidance of Khandro Tsering Drolkar. In this sense, the retreat will consist of a combination of study and hands-on practice, as well as extensive teachings on the preliminaries, main practice, and ways of enhancing Chöd. On April 29th, Machig Labdrön’s birthday, we will have a very special celebration and practice the entire Garland of Jewels sadhana together. Part II of Garland of Jewels will be offered on December 7 - 22, 2018 (p. 32).

CHÖD: From Chögyal Namkhai NorbuWith Lopön Chandra Easton and Karla Jackson-Brewer

May 16 - 20, 2018

Chöd is a unique blend of the Tibetan Shamanic traditions and the Buddhist tradition of compassion and emptiness. This centuries-old practice is sung and is accompanied by the use of a traditional Chöd drum and bell. Healing comes when fear, fixation and self-clinging are cut through, when we nurture and don’t fight what assails us. This gives rise to the awareness of the empty nature of afflictive emotions.

The Chöd practice requires a Chöd drum and bell, both of which are available through our store, online at http://dakinibookstore.mybigcommerce.com

Also recommended is a headlamp or small book-light for night practice.

Since beginningless time, our own minds have run wild and not served us as they have fallen victim to various afflictive emotions, suffering, depression, laziness, and other negative thought patterns. In this retreat we will learn to take the power of our own minds back, so that they serve us and not the other way around. We will learn and practice a variety of special techniques that come from the ancient meditation traditions of India, Tibet, and Bhutan to gradually bring our own minds under our control, so that we may begin to tap into our highest potential in our spiritual practice, interactions with others, careers, and daily life.

Celebrate the launch of Lama Tsultrim’s new book Wisdom Rising: Journey into the Mandala of the Empowered Feminine (Simon & Schuster, May 2018), which offers access to a previously forbidden aspect of the feminine: the fierce wise Dakini, whose juicy potency is needed to meet the gale force winds of the current world situation. Nasty woman and pussy power translate into a dynamic spiritual practice based on 1000-year-old Tibetan tradition. Through the Dakini Mandala, universal template of wholeness, the five dakinis transform emotional poisons into wisdom. Lama Tsultrim will guide you on a journey into the mandala of your innermost being, where the empowered feminine resides. This retreat includes a wine reception and book signing. Lama Tsultrim will offer transmission of the Mandala of the Five Dakinis and guide us into the mandala with meditation, imagination, mandala drawing, and movement.

This process is of great benefit when working with a wide variety of personal demons and other dilemmas of modern life. The demon work will be balanced by the deep practice of Prajñaparamita, a “nature of mind” meditation practice. This training is the first step for licensed healing professionals who want to become certified to use this process professionally.

What is the role of prana in spiritual practice? How do we cultivate balanced prana? What are signs of balance and imbalance, and what can we do when prana gets out of whack?

Prana (known in Tibetan as rlung and in Chinese as qi) is the cosmic force that links body and mind on a thread of breath. Understanding prana circulation is critical to integrating the vitality and insight that arises from practice. Equally vital is the understanding of how disturbances to the flow of prana can arise in the course of spiritual development and how we can modify our practices to regain balance.

Through lecture, discourse and practice, retreatants will gain valuable tools and insight for embodied awakening.

Open to all

This retreat is for the Gateway Tigers cohort. During this retreat, in addition to learning the Parchangma Chöd, the group will spend time on questions, discussion and deepening of the Ngöndro in this last year of the Foundation program.

The Parchangma Chöd is an integral part of Do Khyentse’s Dzinpa Rangdröl (Self-Liberation of Clinging) treasure cycle (terma). In this retreat, you will learn the five melodies and the musical patterns for the drum, bell, and kangling. For those Tigers who have already learned Parchangma Chöd and have practiced it for a while, there will be an opportunity to engage in Tulzhug, or “vanquishing conduct,” which involves going out alone on the land all night to practice in places that scare you–an authentic and deep Chöd practice.

The practice of Chenrezig P’howa is the extraordinary Vajrayana method for attaining rebirth in Amitabha Buddha’s pure realm. P’howa means transferring consciousness from one state to another. At the moment of death, the skillful means of the “P’howa of three recognitions” allows us to direct our consciousness out of our body and into the exalted environment of Amitabha’s enlightened mind. Once enlightened, meditative realization and the capacity to benefit others increase to their ultimate potential.

P’howa accomplishment ensures that we will not die in a state of spiritual uncertainty, drifting helplessly in the after-death bardo. This practice also provides a consummate method to help others when they die. Magyu | Open to all

We will begin with the Common Empowerment of Chö, Opening the Door to the Sky, according to the Ear-Whispered Lineage. We will focus on the teachings and Tantric practice of the Prajñaparamita and the Five Dakinis according to the Ear-Whispered Lineage, based on the text: A Retreat Manual of the Five Dakinis, the Preliminary to the Chö Instructions entitled, “A Wish-Fulfilling Powerful King,” composed by Tuken Lobsang Chökyi Nyima.

This retreat interweaves the Tantric practice of embodying the awakening energies of Prajñaparamita and the Five Dakinis with the transformation of conflicting emotions into pure awareness. This retreat is traditionally called “the Preliminaries to the Sacred Chö Practice,” a prerequisite to the further Chö practices of the Dâkinî Ear-Whispered Lineage, a Lineage of Wondering Chöpas.

Drubpön Lama Karma will teach on two precious cycles of Dzogchen instructions by Dudjom Rinpoche. The first is Extracting the Essence of Accomplishment: Straightforward Ultimate Guidance on the Practice of Mountain Dharma Training. This explains in lucid detail why one would do retreat; the view, meditation, and conduct of Dzogchen; how to keep the samayas; and how to bring about the fruition of Dzogchen practice in this very lifetime. The second instructions are the Extremely Profound Ultimate Instructions on the Three Spaces: Pith Instructions of the Secret Cycle of the Great Perfection. In these instructions, outer space is the expanse of appearances and emptiness. Inner space is the naked nature of the mind free of conceptual thoughts. Secret space is the self-arisen all-pervasive luminosity of awareness. The goal is to merge all three spaces inseparably in our Dzogchen practice. Open to all

This is a continuation of teachings on the Garland of Jewels (Rinchen Trengwa) chöd tradition. We will receive detailed teachings on how to perform the series of retreats that are central to this tradition, all of which Drubpön Lama Karma has completed. First, there is the 100-day and 100-feast retreat utilizing the main Garland of Jewels sadhana. Second, there is a three month retreat utilizing Karma Chagme’s Opening the Door to the Siddhis of the Method to Accomplish the Instructions of Chöd on One Seat. Third, there is a seven-day roaming retreat focusing on merging the previous instructions with Secret Yogic Conduct. Fourth, if practitioners are ready, there is a 108-day One Hundred and Eight Springs retreat. Lama Karma will also give teachings from the profound Secret Path of Ten Million Dakinis: Machig’s Complete Explanation.

Although not required, you are encouraged to first attend Part I of Garland of Jewels (see page 22).

In colder months, temple camping is an option.

Commuting is available for some retreats, please check the program page. In order to hold the container of the retreat, please plan to attend all sessions from 7am to 9pm.

A Note On DanaDana is a Pali word meaning “generosity.” As one of the six paramitas or “perfections,” the practice of generosity is an integral part of the Buddhist path. Dharma teachings are traditionally offered on the basis of dana, so our retreat fees are in place to cover food, facilities, staffing, and other overhead costs. Below the course price, we list a suggested dana amount in an effort to give participants an idea of what a traditional offering might be for each retreat, but this is simply a suggestion and is in no way a required fee. In Tibetan Buddhism, there is a concept of tendrel or “auspicious interdependence” which gestures to the special relationship that is formed between a teacher and her students in many ways. Traditionally after a transmission or teaching, in order to create good tendrel and to reflect appreciation for the preciousness of what they have received, offerings are made on the part of the student to the teacher. The teachers for our programs offer their time and teaching and are not paid. They are only financially compensated by what participants offer at the end of the retreat. Most teachers dedicate their lives to teaching and often have no other source of income. Many donate all of their dana to Dharma activities. There will be an opportunity to make dana contributions at the end of each retreat to the teacher or teachers with a white scarf, called kata, which represents pure mind.

LIVING DHARMA VOLUNTEERS“When I walked into the Temple, I knew I was where I needed to be. The Taras took my breath away. As I began helping around the Temple I had that feeling of having been here before – not in this very Temple, perhaps, but something felt incredibly familiar and, for lack of a better word, strangely right...I wept when the time came to leave.”

— Brenda Proudfoot, Retreat Manager at Tara Mandala

“Tara Mandala is truly a luminous jewel. While participating in the LDV program, I’ve deepened my own Buddhist practice, worked wholeheartedly while acquiring practical and specialized skills, and shared in amazing moments with new friends from across the globe. The cuisine is deliciously creative and healthy. The land is true to Colorful Colorado. And the Dharma practiced here is authentic and timely.” — Matthew Cannella, Filmmaker

The Living Dharma Program (LDV) offers participants the opportunity to develop the skills and abilities with which to integrate Dharma practice and mindfulness into daily life. Through the teachings of Vajrayana, volunteers will gain a new perspective on how Dharma practice can transform the attitude with which one approaches all aspects of life and work. Creating such a shift in perspective requires significant effort on the part of the volunteer; one is invited to take on this challenge through service, the support of a practice community, and a curriculum of Dharma teachings and practice. Volunteers camp in summer and are housed in dorms in colder months. Volunteers work an average of 30 hours per week at various assigned jobs. Work areas include kitchen, temple, garden, land crew, retreat setup, the Tara Mandala Store, Prajña residence hall, community building, and the office.

Those who can make a full three-month commitment to the LDV Program that includes the month of mid-June to mid-July 2018 will participate in the Three Yana Retreat (June 17 - July 14, 2018) morning and evening practice sessions along with afternoon/evening classes with an Authorized Teacher. Following that period, daily group practice and teachings with Authorized Teachers comprise the core of the spiritual curriculum. The evening teaching sessions of group retreats are often available depending on the boundaries of each retreat. Volunteers also take part in all community practices, events, councils, and karma yoga. All volunteers must make a commitment to participate fully in daily practices and community events. Applications and volunteers are welcomed year-round.

THE TRIKAYA TARA TEMPLEThe main temple at Tara Mandala was born from a dream Lama Tsultrim had during a year-long solitary retreat on June 5, 2001 – the night of the Buddha’s birthday. The dream began with depth radiance blue, then the three levels and a mandala formation were revealed to her by the great Dzogchen master from the 8th century, Vimalamitra.

The 12,000 sq. ft. temple was constructed between 2007 - 2009, using the skills of traditional Bhutanese wood carvers and Tibetan artists.

The third and top floor represents mind and pure awareness: Dharmakaya. This is an open room with four doors and is painted the same blue from the original dream.

The second floor represents sacred speech and the luminous radiance of pure form: Sambogakaya. This floor houses offices, guest quarters for visiting teachers, library, and archives.

The ground floor represents the physical embodiment of enlightened energy in our world: Nirmanakaya. This level is the main temple with a circumambulation corridor and four entrances.

The artist for the entire temple was Lama Gyurme Rabgye, who worked with David Petit and Lama Tsultrim Allione to create one of the most exquisite representations of Vajrayana Buddhist cosmology in the world.

TARA MANDALA® LIBRARY UPDATEIn 2017, the Tara Mandala Library acquired many new books and processed both Tibetan and English books under the leadership of Librarian Jampa Dhadak Acharya. The library serves the community as an invaluable resource, with residents and retreatants able to check out books.

The library currently holds 798 Tibetan titles, which will be processed this winter, and 975 fully processed English books, with 640 more to process: a total of 2,413 in the collection. The library will also create separate sections on Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Western Psychology, Yoga, and others for comparative studies. All barcoded books are now listed online, and some books have been computerized and are available online. To learn more about the library and to access our online catalog of computerized books, visit taramandala.org.

THE COMMUNITY BUILDINGThe Community Building was the first structure to be built at Tara Mandala and was completed in 2005. It is a 6,000 sq. ft. double-walled, adobe structure which houses our kitchen, dining room, store, full bathrooms with soaking bathtubs, and offices.

The wood for this building was harvested from the land using horses. Lama Gyurme and his brother Palden from Tibet were the artists for the wood carving and painting. All the interior plasters are different colors of clay that were found on the land, and the decorative paintings of traditional Tibetan motifs were created using natural mineral pigments.

TARA MANDALA® STOREThe Tara Mandala Store offers a variety of treasures to support Buddhist practice and study including a unique selection of books, clothing and jewelry, as well as handmade ritual implements and beautifully crafted shrine items such as Chöd drums, thangkas, statues, and deity art. Also available are Lama Tsultrim’s 21 Tara Herb Formulas, infused with awareness and containing a blend of organically grown and ethically wild-crafted herbs harvested from the surrounding lands.

SUPPORTING TARA MANDALA®

Tara Mandala is a tax-exempt charitable corporation that relies on the generosity of its supporters. Retreat program fees comprise 35% to 40% of our budget and charitable gifts make up 50% of our budget. Charitable gifts to Tara Mandala help us provide access to retreats, offer sustainable wages to our permanent staff, maintain the temple and other facilities, and develop new programs, capital repairs and other improvementss — all of which support Tara Mandala’s role as a leading light for Buddhism and the empowered feminine in the West.

Annual FundIn the coming year, donations to the Annual Fund will support the vital work of Tara Mandala to bring insights and awareness of Buddhist practice to our growing and truly global sangha, as well as vital and ongoing operating and infrastructure improvements. These improvements include network infrastructure upgrade, water and electrical grid upgrades, new master plan work, resident housing upgrades, a new retreat cabin, and a new 4WD land vehicle. Given the evolving needs of a growing organization, general support of the campaign is the most helpful to Tara Mandala as it offers the flexibility to invest where the opportunities and needs are most pressing. Donors may make cash and non-cash gifts, or make pledge commitments payable until the end of the calendar year.

Evada Scholarship FundWith your support, Tara Mandala is able to offer partial scholarships for many retreats. The Evada Fund was established in 1996 to extend the concept of dana (generosity) to members of the sangha who find themselves in financial need and who would not otherwise be able to attend a specific retreat.

Fund for Diversity, Inclusion & EquityIn the summer of 2015, Tara Mandala received a generous donation to seed a Fund for Diversity, Inclusion & Equity. These funds are for people of color and/or those who are underrepresented due to their gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, social class, and ethnicity and would otherwise be unable to participate in programs or attend retreats at Tara Mandala.

The David Petit Sustainability FundTara Mandala’s co-founder, David Petit, built Tara Mandala with his devotion. We launched the David Petit Sustainability Fund on our 20th anniversary year to honor David’s commitment and recognize his legacy. Annual returns from this quasi-endowment supplement fee and gift income and provide even greater stability to our operations. With an inspirational goal of $8 million or more, our first goal is to grow the fund to $2 million.

UPDATE FROM THE TARA MANDALA® BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Greetings! With the support of many of you, Tara Mandala has grown over the past 24 years into a vibrant community of authentic Buddhist practice in the West and a sacred center of the empowered feminine. The past year in particular has been an abundant and productive time at Tara Mandala. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor with the 2017 Double Match Campaign and our flourishing sangha, we raised over $1.5M last year to fund crucial Capital improvement projects and support Operating needs. With 50% of our Operating Budget and 100% of our Capital Budget funded through donations, we rely on the generosity of our Sangha to bring Lama Tsultrim’s vision to life.

At Tara Mandala, the Annual Fund supports Capital Projects that focus on improvements and repairs to the infrastructure and buildings that allow Tara Mandala to be a robust retreat center, and it provides support for the organization’s Operating needs.

New Capital Projects made possible by your support this past year include:• The building of an additional residential cottage and retreat cabin

• Repairs to the temple roof and sealing of walkways on Sambhogakaya and Dharmakaya levels to prevent leaking

• Installation of new boilers to heat the temple

• Plaster repairs to the exterior walls of the Temple, Prajna and the Community Building

• Improvements to the water filtration systems in Prajna and the Community Building

• Installation of a new dishwashing sanitation station, convection ovens and other improvements to the kitchen

• Purchase of a new temple vehicle

• Initial funding of an emergency savings reserve

• Purchase of new bedding for Prajna

• Repairs to existing retreat cabins and resident housing

• $37,000 in scholarships offered through the Fund for Diversity, Inclusion & Equity and Evada Fund

Operating Projects that were supported through the Annual Fund include: • Year-round food program for residents

• Year-round Living Dharma Volunteer (LDV) program, including monthly stipends for long-term LDVs

• Year-round teachings for residents, including Cultural Literacy and Diversity training, Umdze and Chöpon training, Feeding Your Demons® and White Dakini Sadhana

• Securing of Religious Workers Visas for long-term international residents and two new Resident Teachers, Drupön Lama Karma and his wife Drolkar from Bhutan

• Translation of Feeding Your Demons® into Arabic

• $125,000 in scholarships for residents, staff and teachers to attend the Bhutan Pilgrimage

As we enter into the 2017-2018 season, we are grateful and enthusiastic. This year we will celebrate the publication of Lama Tsultrim’s third book Wisdom Rising: Journey into the Mandala of the Empowered Feminine and the launch of the Online Program Wisdom Rising: Journey into the Mandala of the Empowered Feminine, which will make the mandala practice of the empowered feminine available to the world. We also look forward to our first 21 Tara Drubchu, where we will activate the energy of each Tara; the launch of a Feeding Your Demons® clinical trial; the sixth and fifth years of Gateway and Magyu programs; and Drubpön Lama Karma, here from Bhutan, teaching a variety of retreats, including the full transmission of the precious Rinchen Trengwa Chöd over two retreats in the Spring and Winter.

To learn about how you can contribute to Tara Mandala and support these exciting projects in 2018, please see page 45.
