Women’s Soccer Wins Third Straight SUNYAC CrownMen’s Soccer Reaches Ten Wins For Third Straight Year

Women’s Soccer Earns ThirdConsecutive NCAA Berth

The women’s soccer teamproved that there would be no stoppingthem in the post-Liz McGrail era as theycontinued their dominance in theSUNYAC en route to their third consecu-tive title. They ended the season unde-feated in conference play for the thirdstraight year while extending their regu-lar season and overall SUNYAC winningstreaks in the process. The Red Dragonscurrently have won 35 straight regularseason games in the SUNYAC and 36straight overall including the last threeconference tournaments.

The 2001 season opened at theUniversity of Rochester tournament whereOneonta dropped two 1-0 games to KeeneState and Eastern Connecticut State. Theinitial win of the fall came the followingweekend in the opening game of theMayor’s Cup Tournament at Hartwickagainst Western New England College.Two second half goals, including sopho-more Megan Conboy’s (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) first collegiate goal, cata-pulted them to a 2-0 win over the GoldenBears. The next day Oneonta would facethe defending National Champions in theCollege of New Jersey to decide thisyear’s champion of the Mayor’s Cup. TheLions scored two early goals and then shutdown the Oneonta attack en route to theshut out victory.

The loss against TCNJ was thelast one for a while as the Red Dragonsran off 18 straight including their two winsin the SUNYAC Tournament to earn a trip

to the NCAA Tournament for a thirdstraight year. Along the way, senior AmyDucharme (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills)was a scoring machine. Over an eightgame stretch she scored 11 goals that in-cluded at least one goal in five consecu-tive games. She finished the season asthe team leader in goals (16), points (38)and game-winning goals (5) and was se-lected as the SUNYAC Most Valuable

Player.The Oneonta

offense racked up 63goals for the seasonand played in onlythree games this fallwhere they won byonly one goal. Thedefense was just asoutstanding with itssenior leaders,Kristen Henniger

(Lake Grove, NY/Sachem), Liz Grosser(Levittown, NY/Kellenberg), HillaryPilosi (Dalls, PA/Lake Lehman) andKristen Lynch (Columbus, GA/West (NY)Geneseo). This foursome, along withfreshman goalkeeper Erin Hodges(Watervliet, NY/Watervliet), allowed only10 goals including only one during regu-lar season play in the SUNYAC.

The run for the Red Dragonscame to a screeching halt in the first roundof the NCAA Tournament when they lostto Keuka College 1-0. Oneonta com-pletely dominated play and held a decidedadvantage in shots at 26-1, but allowedthe Storm to capitalize on their only op-portunity of the contest.

Men’s Soccer Team RegistersDouble-Digits in Wins for

Third Straight Year

The men’s soccer team had an-other solid showing on the pitch this fallwith their 10-7-1 overall record includinga 4-2-0 record in the Atlantic Soccer Con-ference. The 10 wins for Oneonta wasthe third straight year that the squad hasregistered a double-digit winning season.The significance for the program in gen-eral is that they had not had a string ofseasons like this since the mid-’80’s whenthey put together five consecutive 10+winning seasons from 1984 to 1988.

The 2001 season opened on theroad at the Nike Classic hosted by theUniversity of New Hampshire. The RedDragons came home with a split after de-feating the hosts 2-0 and dropping a 2-1match to the University of Vermont. Jun-ior Ryan Rummery (Biggin Hill, England/Oxtego County) and freshman GeorgeFriedman (Stockholm, Sweden/Nacka)were both selected to the All-TournamentTeam for their performance during the twogames.

The secondweekend of the sea-son brought the open-ing of the College’sbrand new soccer fa-cility and the hostingof the Mayor’s CupTournament. Unfor-tunately Oneonta wasdefeated by West Vir-ginia 2-1 in the opening game on the newfield, but did bounce back the next day todefeat Mercer University 3-1 behind twogoals and one assist by sophomore JmeAmoako (Brooklyn, NY/Friends).

The Red Dragons opened theregular schedule with a trip to Philadel-phia University on Sep. 15 and werebeaten 1-0 in overtime. Philadelphia, whowould end up winning the ASC crown,scored 31 seconds into the first overtimeperiod to pull out the win.

Oneonta would win four of thenext five games including two 1-0 winsover defending ASC champion, FloridaInternational, and Adelphi University.

Volleyball Team ReachesTwenty Wins Again

The Oneonta State volleyballteam had high hopes entering the 2001campaign as the squad returned all of itsstarters from a year ago. The team didsee many younger players contribute andgain experience and finished 24-18 over-all for a third straight 20+ win season un-

der coach ColleenCashman.

The seasonstarted at home withthe Oneonta HolidayInn/Red Dragon Invi-tational on Aug. 31and Sep. 1. The RedDragons finished theweekend 3-1 andcaptured the SilverDivision crown whilehaving senior Jayme

Stewart (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa)selected to the All-Tournament Team.Stewart tallied 35 kills and 24 digs in lead-ing the way for the Red Dragons in thetournament.

The next two weekends sent theRed Dragons to the Rochester area for theBrockport Invitational and the RIT Invi-tational. Over the two weekends, the RedDragons went a combined 2-6 to drop theirrecord to 5-6 entering a single match withUnion on Sep. 19. Sophomore LaceyMusso (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) was named to the All-Tour-nament Team at RIT. Oneonta droppedtheir match to Union and fell to 5-7 as theylooked to the first weekend of SUNYACEast pool play at Cortland.

Oneonta came through their firstround of conference competition with a4-1 record with their only loss to Cortlandwho went 5-0. Sophomore Becky Leccese(Mt. Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley) led theRed Dragons during the weekend record-ing 23 kills, four aces and 14 digs.

The Red Dragons went 2-2 inMaine at the Bates College Invitationalduring the next weekend. They droppedmatches to Tufts and Salisbury State andpicked up wins over Wheaton and Ply-mouth State.

Next up on the schedule was the32nd annual Oneonta State Invitationalwhich included 12 schools competing forthe top prize. The Red Dragons openedthe first day with a pair of wins to advanceto the championship bracket. JuniorJackie Leahy (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac)

Sophomore James Crofts (Godstone, En-gland/Oxtego County) had the game-win-ner against Adelphi while senior GarvinFoster (Brooklyn, NY/Samuel J. Tilden)netted the winner against FIU.

The next three games on theschedule went by without a win forOneonta as they dropped a tough 2-1 over-time game to Lafayette, tied Iona 0-0 andlost at Cornell 2-1 to put the team’s recordat 6-6-1 with five games remaining.

The Red Dragons snapped out oftheir skid and won four of their last fivegames including a season-ending 4-0 winat Howard to clinch second place in theASC. Rummery led the way in the finalewith two goals and an assist.

led the way for Oneonta. Her individual performance during the weekend earned her All-Tournament honors.

The Red Dragons had a date at the Oswego Invitational during the second week-end of October and came back as winners of the Silver bracket. Musso had another solidoverall weekend and earned All-Tournament honors.

The second round of SUNYAC pool play was held in the friendly confines ofDewar Arena the next weekend. Oneonta split the first night with a loss to Cortland anda win over New Paltz. The next day they clinched second place in the East with threewins to qualify for the SUNYAC Tournament for a second straight year.

The final weekend of the month saw the Red Dragons host the NYSWCAATournament. Oneonta was seeded 10th in a twelve team field and would be matched upwith #7 Vassar in the opening round. The Red Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead andlooked as though they would advance easily into the quarterfinals, but the visiting Brew-ers gained momentum to win the next three games. In the 9th place match they would beswept by Union to end their tournament 0-2.

It was on to the SUNYAC Tournament at Cortland where Oneonta would bematched up against Geneseo, the #3 team inthe West Division. The Red Dragons defeatedthe Blue Knights 3-1 to advance into the tour-nament semifinals for a second straight year.Unfortunately their run would end in the nextmatch as they were swept by Brockport to endtheir season.

Musso and freshman Cassandra Auth(East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) were selectedto the All-Tournament Team as HonorableMentions.

Fall Athletes of the Week

ONEONTA STATE WELCOMES NEWMEMBERS TO THE HALL OF FAMENine Former Athletes and One Former Coach

Part of Third Induction Class

The College at Oneonta welcomed 10 newmembers to its Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday,Oct. 13 at a ceremony in the atrium of the AlumniField House. The ceremony was held as part ofHomecoming/Family Weekend activities and thisyear’s class now brings the total number of induct-ees to 41.

This year’s class was comprised of nine ath-letes and one coach and included Don Axtell, KeithBenjamin ’72, Tina Diekmann Grigsby ’68, KeithMcCarthy ’56, Desmond Munroe ’74, Ronald Pierce’76, Michael Pocyntyluk ’85, Joseph Spanfelner ’57,Jennifer Willink Terwilliger ’85, and Roger Weaver’76.

Axtell was the baseball coach at Oneonta Statefor 30 years and led the team to many successfulseasons during his tenure. His teams won or shared10 SUNYAC titles and Axtell is the last coach tolead the Red Dragons to a conference championshipwhich came in 1993. Along the way he guidedOneonta to its only ECAC Championships whichhe did in 1974 and 1975 and was selected asSUNYAC Coach of the Year four times with the lastcoming in 1989.

A native of Waverly, N.Y., Axtell attendedIthaca College where he received a Bachelor’s De-gree in Physical Education in 1960. Previous to be-ginning at Oneonta State in 1965 he taught andcoached for five years at Lavonia High, ClarkstownHigh and Delhi Tech. He retired to Hilton Head,S.C. and, this coming spring, Axtell will be inductedinto the Waverly High School Hall of Fame.

Benjamin made his athletic mark in the sportof swimming where he was a dominant freestyler inall distances from 200 yards to 1,650 yards. Duringhis four years of competition he set numerousOneonta pool and school records while also settingrecords in the SUNYAC in the 200, 500, 1,000 and1,650 freestyle.

Benjamin was a major contributor to threestraight SUNYAC champion teams from 1968 to1970 and was the recipient of the Fulton Award bythe SUNYAC in 1971 for his valuable contributionto swimming. His career was highlighted by earn-ing All-American honors in both the 500 and 1,650at the NCAA Championships in 1971.

Benjamin graduated from Oneonta with aBachelor’s Degree in General Education and taughtat Union-Endicott Elementary from 1972 to 1977.From 1978 to 1985 he found himself back in swim-ming as a competitive swim coach advisor and agegroup swim coach. In 1986 he began his life in thechurch where he has been since that time and cur-rently he is serving as the Pastor of the First UnitedMethodist Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Grigsby was the first female swimmer to beinducted into the Oneonta Hall of Fame and was anearly pioneer for that sport at the college. Her ca-reer highlight was setting a national collegiate recordfor the 20-yard breaststroke in 1966. She set a stan-dard with her commitment to the swimming and div-ing program for others to follow during her four-year career and served as team co-captain in 1966-67.

Grigsby’s professional life has been devotedto education and swimming where she has attainedmuch success. She has spent 27 years as a teacherand coach for the Monroe-Woodbury Central SchoolDistrict and has had multiple State qualifiers for boysand girls while coaching an undefeated girls team in1979.

McCarthy was the first great point guard forthe men’s basketball program and was referred toby the late G.Hal Chase as “the most valuable playeron the floor.” He played semi-pro basketball in theBuffalo area for three years before entering OneontaState. During his career with the Red Dragons he

was the leading assists man and, by the end, was theplayer who would take the shot when the game wason the line. He returned to the Buffalo area wherehe taught and coached at N. Tonawanda High be-fore returning to Oneonta where he retired after along tenure as an instructor and supervisor.

Munroe was a two-year starter for the RedDragons soccer team and was a member of the 1972squad that played for the College Division NationalChampionship. During his career he was an All-New York State, All-SUNYAC and an All-Ameri-can.

Munroe curently resides in the country of Ja-maica where he and 2000 Hall of Famer AltamontMcKenzie run a distillery.

Pierce was the first great track athlete duringthe early years of the track & field program. Hewas a four-year letterman and a two-year captainand MVP of the squad during his career. He was atwo-time individual qualifier for the NCAA Div. IIIChampionships in the 440-yard hurdles. He was aseven-time All-New York State track athlete and atwo-time New York State relay champion while be-ing a two-time SUNYAC champion in the hurdles.During his four years of dual-meet competition hefinished second only once while winning 50 timesfor a career winning percentage of .980. While work-ing on his advanced degree at Oneonta he served asthe track & field coach and helped guide the squadto a second place finish at the New York State Cham-pionships.

Pierce’s professional career has been involvedin upper management positions of various compa-nies and his current job is as the Chief ExecutiveOfficer, Director of Hire Intelligence, Inc. whichprovides turnkey software solutions for managingpre-recorded on-demand video applications.

Pocyntyluk is one of the all time greats in thehistory of men’s basketball. At the time of his gradu-ation he was the all time leader in scoring and re-bounding. His four years of honors includes ECACRookie of the Year in 1981, three-time ECAC All-Star, three-time SUNYAC All-Star and four-time All-New York State while being a member of the 1,000point club. After his graduation from Oneonta hespent time as an assistant for then coach DonFlewelling in 1984-85 and again from 1987-90. In1985-86 he spent a year as a player/coach in Swe-den where he averaged 37 points and 17 reboundsper game.

Spanfelner has a title that no other athlete can

ever claim, that of being the first captain of the men’ssoccer program that began in 1955. He was theteam’s goalkeeper for the very first season and hisstudent teaching assignment kept him from playinghis senior year, but the team voted him as an honor-ary captain.

Spanfelner was a three-sport standout with hisother two sports being basketball and baseball. As aforward for the basketball team he was a two-yearstarter and reached double figures in scoring 25 timesduring his sophomore and junior seasons. Duringthe spring he was mowing down opponents to wherehe completed an 18-1 career record with threestraight undefeated seasons from 1955-57.

Spanfelner spent 20 years as a teacher andcoach at Proctor High School in Utica, N.Y. untilhis retirement in 1991. In 1966 his basketball teamwon the Section 3, Class A championship.

Willink Terwilliger was a standout for the fieldhockey and lacrosse teams during the early 80’s. Sheis the third leading scorer all time with 114 points infield hockey including 50 goals. She was the fieldhockey team MVP in 1982 and was an All-New YorkState selection in both field hockey and lacrosse. Heracademic achievements earned her the Charles W.Hunt Scholarship for distinguished academicachievement while being chosen as the first recipi-ent of the female Scholar-Athlete Award for theSUNYAC in 1983-84.

Willink Terwilliger’s professional career hasbeen as a teacher and coach in the Penfield andBrighton school systems. She currently is the fieldhockey coach at Penfield High where her teams havewon the Monroe County championship five out ofthe last six years.

Weaver was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in1976 in the 16th round after a stellar four-year ca-reer on the hill and in the outfield for the Red Drag-ons baseball program. During his career he was aSUNYAC All-Star three times and was instrumen-tal in leading the 1974 squad to the ECAC UpsateNew York Championship. His career highlight wasthrowing a no-hitter against Brooklyn College in1975. He spent five years in the Tigers’ Organiza-tion and pitched for the major league team in the1980 season where he went 3-4 with a 4.10 earnedrun average.A native of St. Johnsville, N.Y., Weaver currentlyresides in Canojoharie where he is a Market Repre-sentative for Fulmont Mutual Insurance Company.

Women’s Tennis Team PostsAnother Winning Season

The women’s tennis team wasreworked and reloaded and continued theirwinning ways in 2001 as they put togethertheir third straight winning season. CoachEd O’Malley used returning players andmixed in some solid newcomers to finish9-4 in dual matches.

The squad came out of the gatesstrong as they won their first four matchesto start the season. The first weekend ofthe fall took the team to Plattsburgh wherethey defeated Green Mountain College,Potsdam and the host. In their homeopener against Russell Sage, freshmanPam Katz (Suffern, NY/Suffern) won theclinching match in straight sets to propelthe Red Dragons to a 5-4 win over theGators and keep the team’s record un-

blemished.Oneonta then

dropped two in a row:a 6-3 loss toRensselaer and a 5-4loss to Geneseo,before pulling out a5-4 victory overBrockport to put theirrecord at 5-2 throughthe first half of the

season. The Red Dragons then won twoout of their next three matches enteringthe Rolex Regionals at William Smith atthe end of September.

At the Rolex, freshman LibbyKent (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) ad-vanced into the quarterfinals before hav-ing to retire up one set to the #6 seed inthe tournament. Kent entered as anunseeded player and quickly advancedthrough the first two rounds with straightset wins. In the third round she neededthree sets and over four hours to put awaythe #4 seed, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. In thequarterfinals she was up one set but justcouldn’t continue and had to retire.

Oneonta finished their dualmatch season with wins over Union andOswego and a loss to Ithaca for their final9-4 record. They entered the SUNYACChampionship in good shape with all theirplayers healthy and looking to make a runat the top spot.

At the conference championshipOneonta finished fifth overall, but did

Field Hockey StrugglesThrough Another Fall

Despite winning two of theirthree final games of the season, the fieldhockey team found the going tough againthis fall as they finished 5-12 overall and1-4 in the SUNYAC. The major problemseemed to be on the offensive end as theylost three games 1-0 and three games 2-1.

The season opened at Rensselaerwith 12 players on the Oneonta roster whowere sophomores or freshmen. The teamwas defeated 3-0, but looked ahead to theirnext date at Utica College. Against thePioneers, Oneonta got a goal from juniorBrooke Thomson (Bennngton, VT/Hoosick Falls) with less than 15 minutesremaining in the second half to tie thescore at 1-1. The two teams were still tiedat the end of regulation and went to 7 vs.7 sudden victory overtime. It wasn’t un-til the second overtime that senior NicoleMcCullagh (Camden, NY/Camden) puthome the game-winner with an assist fromfreshman MeghanDonnelly (Rome,NY/Rome FreeAcademy).

The RedDragons then lostthree straight includ-ing a 2-1 loss toNazareth that wassettled in penaltystroke play. Oneontarecorded their sec-ond win of the sea-son against Elmira 2-0 as senior Jen Mollen (Vestal, NY/Ves-tal) tallied both goals for the Red Drag-ons in leading the squad to victory.

Oneonta then dropped fivestraight games including two by the scoreof 1-0 and a third by the score of 2-1 todrop their record to 3-11 entering the fi-nal week of games. The Red Dragons re-grouped and won their final two homegames of the season in convincing fash-ion. A 2-0 shutout victory againstHamilton and a 3-1 win overManhattanville allowed the seniors to fin-ish on a winning note at their home-for-a-year, Swart-Wilcox Field. The seasonended at Oswego with a 1-0 loss for the5-12 final record.

Men’s and Women’s CrossCountry Teams Make Strides

Second-year cross countrycoach, Matt LoPiccolo, was optimistic butguarded about his team’s chances in 2001.He returned a solid nucleus of runners onboth the men’s and women’s side, but waslooking for his first class of recruits to fitin and elevate the overall performancethroughout the fall season.

From theiropening meet atPlattsburgh, it wasapparent that bothteams would be im-proved over 2000.The women ranthird overall as ateam as sophomoreJessica Tylutki(Remsen, NY/NewHartford) took ninthoverall. The men ran seventh overall andwere led by newcomer Brian Suozzo(Franklin, NY/Franklin) who also ranninth.

Suozzo would end up being thetop finisher in every meet during the sea-son for the Red Dragons. His 10th placefinish at the ECAC Championships wouldearn him All-ECAC honors to make himthe first Oneonta runner to garner such anhonor.

The men’s team was balanced offby senior Lee Lurie (N. Babylon, NY/N.Babylon), junior Eric Duffy (Montrose,NY/Hendrick), sophomore Dan Verdi (Sa-vannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) and fresh-men Anthony Cordero (Port Jefferson Sta-tion, NY/Comsewogue), Bryan Reles(Cicero, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) and

Matt Valcik(Latham, NY/Shaker).

The leadingrunner on thewomen’s side wasjust about splitdown the middle asTylutki and seniorSara Snyder(Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) wentback-and-forth dur-

ing the season. Tylutki ended up beingthe top finisher for the Red Dragons five

have two individual SUNYAC Champi-ons. Kent held her top seeding at secondsingles to take the title while classmateCatherine Lodico (Elmira, NY/ElmiraFree Academy) used her #1 seeding andswept through third singles to win the title.
