Winter Sport All Americans Red Dragons in Big Dance Men’s Basketball reaches NCAA’s All American Honors for Wrestlers, Track Athletes and Basketball’s Brian Beckford SUNY Oneonta athletics experienced its greatest winter season with respect to the number of team that had athletes earn All- America honors in their respective sports. All tolled, the Red Dragons had five individuals earn the honor including a pair of wrestlers, a pair of track athletes and one men’s basketball player. This group included two seniors, two juniors and one sophomore. Senior Brian Beckford, Basketball Beckford (Brooklyn/Christ the King), was selected as an NABC Div. III third team All-American. Beckford led the men’s basketball team to its greatest season in 33 years. He also became only the second player in the history of the men’s program to earn the distinction of being an All-American. The first was Oneonta Hall of Famer, Steve Blackmon, who was an All-American after the 1975-76 season. The crowning honor for Beckford comes after a season where he was the Player of theYear in the SUNYAC along with being on the All-Conference first team. His list of honors also included being selected as a first team ECAC Upstate New York All-Star and a second team All- Region selection for D3Hoops.com. Beckford had one of the greatest individual seasons in recent history and possibly all-time. He led Oneonta in points (431), rebounds (244) and blocks (63) while being second on the team in steals (41) and third with 79 assists. He averaged 33 minutes per game and made the most field goals (156) and made the second most free throws (104) during the season. Beckford was a two-year standout player for Oneonta and finished his tenure with 722 points, 459 rebounds, 138 assists, 115 blocks and 79 steals. He started 51 of 54 games played and averaged 30 minutes per contest. For the first time in 33 years the Oneonta State Men’s Basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament. The Red Dragons were selected as an at-large team into the field of 61 due to a winning record in non-conference play while falling just short in the SUNYAC Championship against the Plattsburgh Cardinals on February 27. The team compiled an overall record of 22-7, which set the single season record for wins. They also won 13 conference games during the regular season, which was also the most all time. The team was matched up against Centennial Conference champion, Franklin & Marshall College (PA) in the first round of the tournament at the United States Merchant MarineAcademy in King’s Point, NY. Despite coming up short to an Elite-8 bound Diplomat team, the Red Dragons still compiled one of the most successful seasons in program history. Senior Josh Wake, WrestlingFor Wake (Delhi/Delaware Academy) earning All-America

honors is the crowning athletic achievement for a four-year career that has put him in the top tier of student athletes in the history of the college. He will graduate with 129 career wins, which is sec-ond all-time to Dustin Winn ‘05. He is a two-time ECWC champion and a three-time wrestling Schol-ar All-American, which are just a few of the acco-lades he has accrued during his brilliant career. Heendedupplacingsixthat184lbs.atthechampionshipsandhelpedtheRedDragonsfinish12thinthefinalteamstandings.
