The Removes by Tatjana Soli is a narrative of the American West centered on women, a kind of remaking of the classic Western myth. Spanning the years of the first great settlements, it tells the intertwining stories of fifteen-year-old Anne Cummins, frontierswoman Libbie Custer, and Libbie’s husband, the Civil War hero George Armstrong Custer.
Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie asks timeless questions about love for and loyalty to family and ideology — and I guarantee you won’t be able to put it down until you reach its unforgettable ending. This is a suspenseful and heartbreaking story of an immigrant family driven to pit love against loyalty, with devastating consequences. It is a thought-provoking commentary on justice, politics, terrorism, religion, and family. In short, it is a modern-day Greek Tragedy .
You Don’t Own Me by Mary Higgins Clark is the master suspense writer’s latest novel in her Under Suspicion series. The heroine, television producer Laurie Moran, will stop at nothing to solve the murder of a celebrity doctor—even as she finds herself in grave danger with a mysterious stalker plotting his next move.
Night of Miracles by Elizabeth Berg is the feel-good book of the year. It is a delightful novel of friendship, community, and the natural affinity between the young and the elderly. It is a heartwarming novel for the Holiday Season that reminds us that the people we come to love are often the ones we didn’t expect to love.
Becoming by Michelle Obama is a combination of deep reflection and good storytelling. The reader is invited into her world as she chronicles the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, and finally to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. A resident requested addition to our Library.
