What are Common Core State Standards?• This initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the

National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers.• They were created by teachers, parents, education

experts and others from across the country.• They provide clear, consistent expectations for what

students should be learning at each grade level in order to be preparing for college and career.• They were released in 2010. • Currently 45 states have adopted the standards.

Why Do We Need Common Core Standards?• The Standards assure all students, no matter

where they live, will be focused on graduating from high school prepared for postsecondary education and careers.

• The Standards are only for English Language Arts and Math. South Carolina State standards will continue to be used for Science and Social Studies.

• Science, Social Studies and Technical Subjects have reading and writing Common Core State Standards to continue student preparation for college and career readiness.

writing implementation

2013-2014•K-12 Full Implementation•Considered a bridging year for assessment – test addresses standards

common to Common Core and South Carolina standards

2014-2015 •FULL IMPLEMENTATION•New Common Core State Standards test will be administered

South Carolina, along with the states appearing in green, have joined with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.

In 2014-15, the computer adaptive Common Core assessment will take the place of PASS and other assessments.
