Achieving success in a caring and creative environment.
Principal’s message
Wonthaggi Secondary College
The 2019 school year is nearly over!
Wow! Time can really fly by!
Staff and students in the College are well
and truly involved in preparing for the 2019
school year, while also completing all the
important requirements for 2018.
The finalisation of subject selections and
timetables is ongoing, in readiness not only
for the 2019 school year, but also for the
important Headstart programs undertaken by
students this year. For example, the Year
11 students of 2018 have already completed
their exams and have now commenced their
2019 Year 12 program. Other year levels,
Years 8 to 11 in 2019, will follow with similar
programs over the next few weeks.
Our new 2019 Year 7 students, nearly 280
of them, will attend their particularly im-
portant Induction Day on December 11.
If you have any questions about your child’s
program over the next hectic few weeks,
please don’t hesitate to contact the General
Office at either Campus.
In amongst the planning for next year, there
has been, and will continue, to be many
other activities. The Health & PE Week, zoo
trips, Spine Poetry competition, table tennis,
tennis, cricket, Shrine excursions, senior Art
Show, Drama performances, Year 9 camps,
Year 12 Graduation and exams, are all ex-
amples of just some of the many “extra”
opportunities that have occurred in recent
weeks for our students. We also currently
have our dedicated HPV team competing at
the annual Maryborough HPV event – go
Wonthaggi Wizard! Thanks to all who have
coordinated and supported all events.
On the “new building” site, things have continued to progress particularly well. We remain on track for launching our new senior campus at the start of the 2020 school year. Currently our conversations with this work revolve around furniture needs and the fitting out of classrooms, offices, etc. It is a very exciting time to be at WSC. Darren Parker College Principal

We ask parents to please try to avoid arranging out of school appointments that require pick-ups during class times so as to minimise the disruption to their child’s learning and that of other students. We would appreciate your support in this matter so that office staff do not need to make announcements or make class visits which can negatively impact on lessons. Below are our bell times to assist you with your planning of pick-up times for your child’s appointments:
Unit 1 – 9.12 to 10.00am
Unit 2 – 10.02 to 10.50am

Unit 3 – 11.22 to 12.10pm
Unit 4 – 12.12 to 1.00pm

Please note that our bookseller, Campion Education, closed their Drouin office at the end of October.
Books can still be purchased from Campion’s Berwick store at 1/5 Intrepid Street, Berwick, which is a similar travel time as Drouin from Wonthaggi. You will not need to source books elsewhere if you return your child/s
booklist back to the school by the December 11 deadline.
The 2019 booklists will be handed out to students during Headstart week for each year level.
Please make sure your child attends Headstart in order to receive their Booklist for next year.

Year 8 Spine Poems
The Year 8 students created book spine poems in their library sessions recently. They showed amazing creativity and skill. Some of our best entries are featured here. Year 7 students will be creating book spine poems soon too and staff here in the library can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Wednesday October 24 signified the last day of formal classes for the class of 2018, and Silverwater Resort was the
venue which held our annual dinner.
In total, 350 guests turned up for a wonderful evening of celebrations. It was a perfect time for staff to connect with
students and for staff to catch up with parents they have met along the journey of education here at Wonthaggi
Secondary College.
My thanks to all staff who have been involved in teaching the class of 2018, all the way from Year 7, to those who
came to the dinner on the night, to the parents who have supported students along this journey and finally to the
students themselves. Big thanks also to Baylee Matheson and the team at Silverwater Resort.

Year 11 VCAL Industry Visits
On Tuesday October 16, students from across both VCAL Literacy classes took part in a valuable day of industry
visits, organised through the help and support of Karena Kerr from the South Gippsland Bass Coast LLEN.
Students were taken on an extensive tour of QBE Quarry in Nyora, hearing from a range of professionals working
within a number of professions. While some started work there having completed degrees first, others had moved up
through the ranks, completing certificates and diplomas along the way. Others had started their career in completely
unrelated areas, but diversified over the years.
The important message that students gained from hearing from the team of professionals, whom had given up their
time for our students, was that they don’t need to know what they will do for the rest of their lives and that things can
change over the years to allow them to mould themselves to any situation in which they find themselves
The team of professionals also spoke about a number of valuable skills to consider when applying for jobs- such as:
having a well written cover letter which matches the advertised job; being well dressed and presentable for an
interview, regardless of the job they have applied for; appropriate eye contact; research the company so they appear
interested; and be punctual and on time for an interview.
Students were then taken on a quick tour of Bunnings in Wonthaggi, and listened to staff member, Kelly, speak
about her own journey from Year 12 to starting at Bunnings on the floor, changing stores and now ending up in a
managerial position as well as balancing a young family. Given that Bunnings are local employers, it was valuable for
our students to once again hear tips about what skills and attitudes employers are looking for.
A big thank you to all VCAL students who participated in this valuable day, and especially to Karena Kerr for making
contact with the employers and setting up the visits.

DET Privacy Policy Update
The Department of Education and Training (DET) launched the new Schools’ Privacy Policy via an action item in the 30 January School Update. An updated link to this information is on the bottom of the WSC Website:
Everyone at SCCE extends a huge thank you to WSC for your continual support of our student exchange programs. We’’ve had a wonderful number of high school students across Australia and New Zealand sign up to get out there and experience their world, perfect another language and understand other cultures. At SCCE we truly believe that the international family-living experience makes a huge contribution to human understanding, tolerance of cultural differences and self-awareness.
The end of Term Four is a terrific time for students who are considering a student exchange in 2019 or 2020 to start doing their homework. The information below promotes the free webinars for them to consider before the school year finishes.
We have also just released a range of seven scholarships for 2019. SCCE receives a large quantity of excellent sub-missions every year, so the summer break is a terrific opportunity for your students to give their application some time and effort.

VCAL Mock Interviews
The last day of formal classes for VCAL students was on Thursday 8 November and on this day our students were
interviewed by a panel of local personnel, organised by Karena Kerr of the Bass Coast Council LLEN.
This semester, students have been learning about what makes an effective interview. They have been practicing
interview skills in class, as well as writing letters of application for a range of jobs. CV ’s have also been updated to
include relevant information according to the students’ experience this year.
Students brought along a folder of information including their updated CV and one job they had applied for out of the
three in particular chosen for these interviews.
Students did a wonderful job of preparing for the 20 minute interviews, which provided them both written and verbal
feedback afterwards; useful information which students can take with them for all other interviews they will be
involved with.
A big thanks must go to the following people:
Karena Kerr- Bass Coast LLEN
Ashley Lamers-Wonthaggi Rotary
Jacqui Baillie- Bass Coast Council
Caroline Moore-HR Adviser, Bass Coast Council
Emily Jolly- Anglicare
