BASS COAST STUDENTS DESERVE BETTER!

The establishment of a new campus, on the land available in McKenzie Street, will not only

provide a high-quality physical environment for students but also supply an important com-

munity asset for the wider Bass Coast area. Quality programs continue in the college but the

students and staff also deserve 21st century facilities for delivering this. We call on all in-

volved to commit to this essential project.

New Campus Petition

The Community support for WSC has been particularly positive with many expressing their

disappointment at the lack of announcement for the new senior campus. However, there

have been several developments this term: There are now petitions available in businesses

across Bass Coast. Titled “Bass Coast Students Deserve Better”, it has been possible to

distribute this because of the support of Terry Earl and Dee Connell of the Wonthaggi Busi-

ness & Tourism Association. The same petition is also available online. Other Updates:

We now have a Facebook page; “Bass Coast Students Deserve Better” (the online

petition can be accessed form there too).

The Sentinel Times and Wonthaggi Lions Club coordinated a sausage sizzle and pro-

moted the gathering of signatures last Thu in the main street.

We have received coverage form local papers and were featured on WIN news.

We also had our petition featured on ABC Gippsland radio.

Correction from previous Newsletter

Preparing to access the NDIS

Students studying Japanese at Wonthaggi Secondary College attended ‘Why Learn Japanese?’ excursion last term. Unfortunately the incorrect photos were used. The correct photos are shown, below. Many apologies to the staff and students involved.

If you already receive support from a State or Territory government disability program, you will be contacted by a National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) representative when it is time to transition to the NDIS.

If you do not currently receive disability supports and the NDSI is available in your area you can request access by calling the NDIS.

It is expected to take between six to twelve months for eligible people with disability to enter the NDIS once roll out starts in an area. You can talk to your Local Area Coordinator or NDIA representative about this.

The Dudley Campus is not set up for large volumes of

traffic and this is why we ask parents to please keep their

cars out of the school grounds at the busy drop-off and

pick-up times. We are very mindful of student safety and

this will assist in the smooth operation of the College.

Clay Target Shooting—Lilydale

On the 27th April 14 keen Clay target shooters from McBride and Dudley campus attended the annual Yarra Valley

schoolboys/schoolgirls clay target championship. The event consisted of three disciplines of shooting with 10 shots of DTL (down the line), skeet and 5 stand sporting layout. All students shot very well and braved the heavy rain as they competed. Towards the end of the day Wonthaggi was well placed with some excellent individual performanc-es. In the junior girls Dakota Suckling finished 2

rd, Charlie Cooke finished first in the junior boys, with Max Bird 3

rd

and Cooper Goodwin won the senior boys. Competitors travelled from a range of schools across the state and Wonthaggi performed extremely well once again.

Morpheme of the Month: - PRE -

To continue with our exploration of morphemes and morphology, I thought it would be a great time to introduce PRE-

FIXES! Prefixes are morphemes that are added onto the start of a root or base word to change the root or base

word’s meaning. The word PREFIX actually uses the morpheme ‘PRE’ (what a coincidence!). PRE- means before

and appears in many words all of us use on a daily basis. For all the sporting fans out there, I am sure you have

watched some pre-match entertainment at some stage and, for the many footy boys and girls in our school

community, no doubt you involve yourself with pre-season training. When do these things happen? BEFORE!

Last term we studied the morphemes: -OLOGY- and -AGON- through different home group challenges each morn-

ing. 9F was victorious in the -OLOGY- morpheme challenge for May with all students receiving a WSC Morphologist

of the Month pen and, of course, chocolate! June’s challenge was won by 7K, but they had to share the win with Riley

Barber of 9K, who also received a prize for his amazing efforts with the morpheme -AGON-.

Students are encouraged to get involved in the Morphology Home-group Challenges that will be running in Term 3.

All they have to do is complete the activity each morning in home-group and submit their answers at the end of each

month to the Literacy Co-ordinator (Melissa Phillips). Individuals and whole home-groups will be rewarded for their

participation and interest in learning about morphology.

Fight for First Aid Training to be compulsory in Secondary Schools

Youth Parliamentarians from Wonthaggi Secondary College have successfully passed a Bill through the Legislative Council, proposing to train high school students in first aid. Their Bill, known as Mandatory First Aid Training for Secondary School Students Bill 2017, requires Victorian secondary schools to supply Level 2 First Aid training to all students in Years 9 and 10. The Hon. Britney Ames believes that knowledge of first aid is vital, particularly among teenagers.

“We are forever hearing about young teenagers getting drunk and doing stupid things, resulting in them getting badly hurt or, even worse, dying,” said Ms Ames. “A well-needed skill in this day and age for people affected by drugs and alcohol is first aid.

“It’s ridiculous that these highly important skills aren’t already being taught.”

The Opposition agreed with the intentions of the Bill but argued against the initial plan to implement the program at Year 9, describing it as a “socially difficult” year for students. However, The Hon. Jack Mendes, a member of the Wonthaggi team, disagrees.

“Year 9 is proven to be the best year to learn new things,” said Mr Mendes. “We believe first aid is such an im-portant skill that students should learn it as early on as possible.”

The Opposition stated that the program could “put unnecessary stress” on students, and questioned the maturity of Year 9 students and whether or not they could “handle first aid training”.

“Just because someone isn’t mature enough, doesn’t mean we don’t teach them,” said Youth Premier the Hon. Saxon Taylor-Le Page.

“We ask that the Opposition ‘first-aid’ themselves by opening their eyes to the value of learning first aid,” said The Hon. Matthew Fletcher.

Before passing through the Youth Parliament of Victoria, the Bill was amended to administer the first aid training program at Year 10, as well as Year 9. However, the team from Wonthaggi disagreed with the changes.

WSC on Q&A

On Monday the 24th July, eight of our Wonthaggi SC Legal Studies students took a trip to the Docklands Studios

in the heart of Melbourne to attend the live broadcast of Q & A on the ABC as audience members. The class con-sisted of one Year 11, being James Cohen and the rest consisting of Year 12’s: Callum Murdoch, Callum McFadyen (myself), Jesse Kellow, Ryan Smith, Katie Fisher, Sheona Bugbird, and our decorated school captain Kyle Ross. We departed from Wonthaggi at roughly 4:00pm. We arrived in the the city at roughly 6:00pm with our esteemed bus driver, the Hon. Mr Damien Osborne. Once we finally arrived at Docklands studios at 6:20 pm, most of our group was starving, and eager for a good meal, so, while waiting for 8:00pm, which was the time we were expected to enter the studio, our group enjoyed some fish and chips and the Italian Culinary Classics pizza & spaghetti with meatballs at the Docklands Harbour side. When the time to return to the studio came, we walked back and waited at the front amongst the numerous other prestigious secondary schools that were lucky enough to be selected for this event. While lining up to enter the studio, we engaged in a thorough conversation with stu-dents of Mt. Waverly Secondary College.

Once we got scanned, checked our bags in and entered the studio, we waited patiently in our respective seats for the programme to begin. While this was happening we were lucky enough to witness how the camera crew and producers prepare for the live airing of the programme. At 9:30 PM, the six panellists (including the Shadow Health Minister, the Minister for Energy and the Environment and four high school students) were introduced along with TV Icon and Q & A host Tony Jones to a resounding applause. The highly successful programme last-ed an hour and a half and included interesting questions and answers that sparked debate and agreement be-tween the panellists and resulted in a broad array of bipartisan perspectives, as well as perspectives from the youth in Australia, on current topics and concerns in Australian politics. We left the event at 11:30pm, enlightened and with somewhat fresh perspectives on the topics and strong opinions of the panellists and their answers. On our way back, we stopped at Caldermeade McDonalds for a midnight (12:45) snack. We arrived back at roughly 1:30 thoroughly enjoying our experience.

Cross Country

On Thursday 15th June our finest Cross Country runners competed at Lardner Park at the Gippsland Region

Champs. It was bitterly cold, but the sun managed to peek through the clouds and combined with no wind, made for perfect running conditions. The students had to navigate a hilly course, but luckily no mud this time! We had some excellent results on the day.

Year 8 Badminton

Student Quote

On Thursday 27th July, eight Year 8 students made their way to Morwell for Gippsland Badminton Finals. Round

one saw the boys come up against Nagle College. Brad Peters and Luke O’Connor won their doubles match 21 –

17, whilst Angus Burns and Jesse Condron just fell short, going down 19 – 21. It was a clean sweep for in the sin-

gles matches, with all four boys winning.

The girls first match was against Traralgon SC. Traralgon proved to be too strong in both doubles matches with Par

Sriprajong and Kaylee Paterson going down, as well as Aleena Babu and Charlii Hope. Singles saw similar results

as WSC unfortunately could not get a win on the board.

Round two for the boys was against Sale College. Angus and Jesse redeemed themselves in doubles winning their

match. Brad and Luke once again demonstrated their great teamwork to take away the win. The boys continued

their good run, winning 4 out of the 4 singles matches.

The girls faced off against Lakes Entrance SC. Charlii and Kaylee bounced back from a challenging first round to

win their doubles match. With Aleena and Par following suite to take a win also. As for singles matches, WSC came

away with 3 of the 4 to win the round.

The third and final round for the day was a good contest between the boys and Chairo Christian College. Both dou-

bles matches won and 3 of the 4 singles matches. Well done to Brad who went through all of his doubles and sin-

gles matches undefeated.

The girls final clash was against Drouin SC. Par and Aleena had a well fought match but narrowly missed the

points, 21 – 23. All single matches unfortunately went the way of Drouin. Well done to the girls who took away an

overall third place for the day.

Congratulations to Brad, Luke, Angus and Jesse who finished in first place and have qualified for State Finals at MSAC in mid-September. We all wish you luck.

Junior Girls Football—Sale

The Wonthaggi Junior girls made the trek to Sale on Friday 21st July for a day of football. In perfect conditions

slight breeze and not a cloud in sight the trip made it worth it. The girls came up against Lowanna in game one.

After a slow start, struggling to clear the ball out of congested packs, they began to gain a bit of momentum in the

second half. Bella Ross got the girls on the board with the first goal, then Mia Scott followed up with another two. A

good win in some tight contested footy.

A quick 20-minute break then saw the girls face off against Bairnsdale on the main oval. Playing with one less play-

er did not faze the girls in the slightest, where they picked up from where they left off in game one. The ball re-

mained in Wonthaggi’s forward half for the majority of the first half but there was difficulty in converting on the

scoreboard. After a regroup at half time the girls then made most of their opportunities and the scores began to

come.

The third and final game for the day was against Catholic College Sale, both teams being undefeated saw this

game deemed as the Grand Final. In a much more physical and tougher contest the girls played exceptionally well.

Tired legs and an injury taking the field to only 16 did not stop the girls fight and push to the very end.

WONTHAGGI NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE HOME-WORK CLUB

Wonthaggi Neighbourhood Centre (Mitchell House) has recently started a homework club on a Friday afternoon between 4-5pm in our Harvest Centre Shed. The program has 2 volunteers, one of which is a trained primary school teacher, who have given their time to help students with their homework. We also have older children available to help. We offer help with maths, spelling, reading and projects for any student that needs extra assistance.

There is a $2.00 charge per child to go towards the costs of heat-ing/cooling the room and a light after school snack is also provid-ed.
