    CHORALSCHOLARSHIPAUDITIONSFORINCOMINGNINTHGRADERS

    TheChoralDepartmentscholarshipauditions forstudentsapplyingtoSetonforthe2018-2019academicyearwill takeplaceonSunday,January28between11amand4pm.Toscheduleanauditiontime,pleasecallMrsJeanneDalyat301-864-4532,Ext7120.)Thepurposeof theaudition is toencourageparticipation in thechoralprogrambygivingDrVadalatheopportunitytomeetwithprospectivestudents,andto identifystudents with the skills to merit scholarship funds. Students are asked to do thefollowingattheaudition:

    1. Sing the first verse of The Star-Spangled Banner memorized andwithoutpianoaccompanimentinakeythatiscomfortableforhervoice.

    2. Singasongofherownchoice,andprovidepianosheetmusicfortheselection.(Experiencedaccompanistonhand.)

    The typeof choral singingwedoatSetonencourages thedevelopmentofanatural,unforcedvoice.Therefore,themusicthatthestudentchoosestosingattheauditionshouldnotuseapop-styleheavybeltedsound.

    Suggestedtypesofsongsare:

    MusicaltheatrepieceslikeInMyOwnLittleCornerfromCinderella, FeedTheBirdsfromMaryPoppins,OvertheRainbowfromTheWizardofOz.

    Sacredpieces/churchsongslikePanisangelicus,AmazingGrace,HisEyeIsOnTheSparrow(straight,notsouped-uplikeinSisterAct2)

    If the student is currently taking voice lessons, teacher suggestions willundoubtedly be appropriate. School music teachers should also be able toprovidehelpselectingmusic.

    Studentswillalsobeaskedtogothroughsimplewarm-upexercisesandfilloutbothaquestionnaire about their music background thus far and complete a very briefworksheetthatasksthemtoidentifybasicmusictermsandsymbols.DrVadalaishappytorespondtoquestionsabouttheauditions,andcanbereachedat:[email protected].
