Short biography Born 1962, conductor, composer and music educationalist. He studied composition and choral conducting at Graz University of Music and Performing Arts (KUG). Post- graduate studies with Eric Ericson (Stockholm). In 1994 Herzog founded CANTUS, an ensemble specializing in contemporary music. He is founder and artistic director of the chamber choir Vocalforum Graz and director of the Styrian youth choir Cantanima. With all of these ensembles he achieved numerous successes. Since April 2012 Herzog is artistic director of the Austrian Choral Association. As a composer, Herzog published several choral compo- sitions at Helbling. His Ave Maris Stella ( see page 3) won him second prize in the 2010 “Goldene Stimm- gabel” (Golden Tuning Fork) international competition for composers held by AGEC. Herzog is internationally active as a conductor and com- poser and as an expert for choral conducting and choral voice training. He is currently head of choral conducting course at the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory in Graz and a lecturer at KUG. Furthermore, he was one of the artistic directors of the 5 th World Choir Championships in Graz in 2008. For his achievements, he was awarded the merit prize of the Federal Ministry of Science and Re- search. In recent years, composition has played an ever increasing role in his musical work. With its extensive structure, this Missa “Lux caelestis” by Franz M. Herzog follows in the tradition of the great settings of the Mass. It is characterised by an outstandingly vivid musical language, which presents both concert and chamber choirs with a stimulating challenge. All sections of the Mass can also be performed independently of one another.The treatment of the Kyrie text is outstanding for the atmospheric density of its musical language. Expressive melodic lines and terse rhythmic patterns are repeatedly combined in ways which are always new and vividly convey the messages of the text to the audience. Equally emphatic is the way in which Herzog fashions the Gloria, the climax of which is an intense and powerful soprano solo (Lux caelestis). Following on musically from the fi rst two sec-tions, long passages of the Credo present themselves in highly rhythmical

form and fascinate the listener by the subtlety with which the credo intonation is handled and by organ points, powerful melodies, a powerfully dramatic Crucifi xus and expressive harmonic fl ows. Herzog juxta-poses the largely calm and smoothly fl owing Sanctus with a livelier Hosanna in excelsis. The closing Agnus Dei with its marching 5/4 time is initially imbued with a solemn mood, but closes in complete accordance with the text with a peaceful Dona nobis pacem.

In ihrer großfl ächigen Anlage an die Tradition der großen Messvertonungen anknüpfend, ist diese

Missa „Lux caelestis“ von Franz M. Herzog durch eine überaus eindringliche Musiksprache gekennzeichnet,

die eine anregende Herausforderung für Konzert- und Kammerchöre darstellt. Alle Messteile können auch

unabhängig voneinander aufgeführt werden und sind als Einzelausgaben in der Serie Chorus XXI erhältlich.

Die Verarbeitung des Kyrie-Textes zeichnet sich durch eine atmosphärisch dichte Klangsprache aus.

Expressive melodische Linien und prägnante rhythmische Patterns werden immer wieder neu miteinander

kombiniert und vermitteln die Textaussagen in eindringlicher Art. Ebenso nachdrücklich gestaltet Herzog

das Gloria, dessen Höhepunkt ein intensiv-kraftvolles Sopran-Solo (Lux caelestis) bildet. Musikalisch an

die ersten beiden Abschnitte anschließend, gibt sich das Credo über weite Strecken sehr rhythmisch

betont und fasziniert durch den subtilen Umgang mit der Credo-Intonation, durch Orgelpunkte, kraftvolle

Melodien, ein ausdrucksstarkes Crucifi xus und expressive harmonische Verläufe. Dem eher ruhig fl ießenden

Sanctus stellt Herzog ein bewegteres Hosanna in excelsis gegenüber. Das abschließende Agnus Dei ist mit

seinem schreitenden 5/4-Takt zunächst von ernster Stimmung erfüllt, endet aber ganz dem Text ent-

sprechend mit einem friedvollen Dona nobis pacem.

This impressive Ave Maris Stella by Franz M. Herzog, arranged in cyclical form and symbolising eternity, was commissioned as part of the “styria cantat 2” project of the Styrian Singers Association, and won 2nd prize in the 2010 international “Golden Tuning Fork” competitionfor composers. “The sea gains its symbolism from the vast expanses and depths of its masses of water. It is fed by innumerable rivers, which, in their turn, are gradually swollen to their full volume by their many tributaries. The sea consists of a sole element, water, which, like a single organism is constantly in motion, sometimes powerfully, sometimes less so. Franz M. Herzog composed his seven-part cycle Canticleof the Sun on behalf of the US-based Raschèr Saxo-phone Quartet which gives concerts all over the world. This cycle for eight-part choir SATB, soli, percussion and saxophone quartet or string quartet (chamber or-chestra) is based on the Old Italian Canticle of the Sun text by Francis of Assisi, who in it invokes humans to the glorifi cation of God through all his creations. In the fi fth part Laudato si, mi Signore the suffe-rers are induced to praise God. For the sake of His love they endure their pain. In a sensitive manner, refl ec-ting the atmosphere of the text, Herzog lets the atmos-phere of the text become perceptible in a very striking manner!

Franz M. Herzog’s treatment of the Christmas carol Es wird scho glei dumpa (When Darkness is Falling), well known throughout the Alpine region, may be un-conventional, but is enormously atmospheric. Above the surging expanses of sound of the lower voices, the drawn out soprano melody rings out in 4/4 time, spheri-cally completely transported, and in addition harmo-nically estranged. The middle section is in familiar 3/4 time. An effective arrangement!

The cycle Bekenntnisse contains two pieces which plumb the shadow regions of human existence on a very personal level: Aufschrei deals with artistic inspi-ration perceived as a burden: shrill, tortured screams, glissandi and the absence of a tonal center give distinc-tion to the musical language characterized by extreme expression. Stunde in die Nacht paints the dark scene of approaching death with reverberant sounds, a con-tinuous circling of the melodic lines, dissonant imita-tions as well as a free rhythmic structure.Lyrics in German only.

Mond zwischen dir und mir /Moon Between You and MeSSATB a cappella

Alois Hergouth’s language is music in itself, euphonic and rhythmical. The tender dialogue hinted at in the text is refl ected in Herzog’s music by seconds and octa-ves. Extensive harmonies are spanned by a lyrical line, drawn for the most part in octaves, until the fi nal sec-tion is formed by onomatopoeic elements (“ticking”). A sensitive musical portrayal of the text! For this printed version, Herzog carried out a further comprehensive reworking of the composition.
