Refrigeration equipmentmaintenance specialist and BSCmember Capital Cooling recentlyheld a training day to educate sub-contractors on the safety standardsexpected of them while working onbehalf of the company. The dayculminated in an exam where allseven participants gained a BSCLevel 1 Certificate in Health andSafety at Work.

Capital Cooling has been a member ofthe British Safety Council since July lastyear and wanted to find a way to ensureits contractors maintain appropriatesafety, quality and environmentalstandards. Lowellyne James, the firm’squality, safety and environmentalmanager, says he found that the BSC’sLevel 1 qualification provided anexcellent way of getting the health andsafety message across to all staff.

“We are very pleased to haveachieved a 100 per cent pass rate,” hesays. “I think it has raised awarenessamong our sub-contractors and staff byhaving this qualification. The Level 1Certificate builds the foundations in

terms health and safety knowledge andawareness required by staff to performtheir various roles safely and effectively.”

Capital Cooling has over 140 directmembers of staff and its aim is to haveat least 80 per cent of its staff qualifiedin the BSC’s Level 1 qualification bythe end of 2010.

Lowellyne says that the feedback hehas received so far has been positive.“Generally our sub-contractors said thatfor the amount of time they took off fromtheir busy schedule, it was worthwhileand they learned a lot, so hopefully theywill benefit from it. I am very pleased

that the course has surpassed theirexpectations, and I am proud that theyall successfully passed the examination.”

Lowellyne adds that although thecompany provides induction training,it isn’t validated by any externalagency. “By becoming a BSC member,we can use the BSC Level 1 Certificatetraining format as the cornerstone ofour induction process, ensuring thatanyone who joins the companyunderstands their responsibilities inregards to safety at work,” he says.

Capital Cooling aims to get approvalnext year to deliver the BSC Level 2Certificate in Supervising Staff Safelyin-house, which it hopes will be thenext step in terms of providing suitabletraining for contractors, managementand supervisors. Lowellyne explains:“We expect in the next financial yearthat as part of their continuousprofessional development, supervisorsand managers should achieve theirBSC Level 2 qualification, which I believe will help them fulfil theirresponsibility to ensure the health and safety of their colleagues.”
