Refrigeration equipment maintenance specialist and BSC member Capital Cooling recently held a training day to educate sub- contractors on the safety standards expected of them while working on behalf of the company. The day culminated in an exam where all seven participants gained a BSC Level 1 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work. Capital Cooling has been a member of the British Safety Council since July last year and wanted to find a way to ensure its contractors maintain appropriate safety, quality and environmental standards. Lowellyne James, the firm’s quality, safety and environmental manager, says he found that the BSC’s Level 1 qualification provided an excellent way of getting the health and safety message across to all staff. “We are very pleased to have achieved a 100 per cent pass rate,” he says. “I think it has raised awareness among our sub-contractors and staff by having this qualification. The Level 1 Certificate builds the foundations in terms health and safety knowledge and awareness required by staff to perform their various roles safely and effectively.” Capital Cooling has over 140 direct members of staff and its aim is to have at least 80 per cent of its staff qualified in the BSC’s Level 1 qualification by the end of 2010. Lowellyne says that the feedback he has received so far has been positive. “Generally our sub-contractors said that for the amount of time they took off from their busy schedule, it was worthwhile and they learned a lot, so hopefully they will benefit from it. I am very pleased that the course has surpassed their expectations, and I am proud that they all successfully passed the examination.” Lowellyne adds that although the company provides induction training, it isn’t validated by any external agency. “By becoming a BSC member, we can use the BSC Level 1 Certificate training format as the cornerstone of our induction process, ensuring that anyone who joins the company understands their responsibilities in regards to safety at work,” he says. Capital Cooling aims to get approval next year to deliver the BSC Level 2 Certificate in Supervising Staff Safely in-house, which it hopes will be the next step in terms of providing suitable training for contractors, management and supervisors. Lowellyne explains: “We expect in the next financial year that as part of their continuous professional development, supervisors and managers should achieve their BSC Level 2 qualification, which I believe will help them fulfil their responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their colleagues.” Capital Keeps its Cool with Level 1 Course
