FOREWORD

It is a delight to welcome you to essenTIaLLY danCe 2009. We have taken special pleasure this year to showcase not only our performance students but also the work of some of our graduates who currently are or have been practising as choreographers and performers themselves. Clare dyson (1992) and Fiona Malone (1994) are independent choreographers working out of Brisbane and sydney respectively, Yolande Brown (1998) is currently performing with Bangarra dance Company and angus Lugsdin (1993) is the Coordinator of the Queensland dance school of excellence. They have each created short new works as tasters for our final year students challenging them with different styles and approaches to making dance work. These students also expand their networks by being introduced to our alumni and the industry.

another past student Lesley Livesey and his partner Kym stokes, currently MFa students, have shared their extensive knowledge as aerial artists working in the commercial field and created training programmes for our students to prepare them for the specialist skills needed for this aerial dance. This is a great opportunity for these students to diversify their practice.

QUT dance was proud to receive an invitation to perform again this year at the prestigious Guangdong Modern dance Festival in China and our third year students will be travelling in July to participate with their peers – an invaluable experience and cultural exchange opportunity for them.

Csaba Buday and I have had the pleasure of working with our first year and second year performance students, offering them fresh opportunities for artistic growth in both the creation and performance of our contemporary works. Csaba is also making a new work for expressions dance Company’s The dance Makers season in august this year – a great link for QUT with our local professional dance company.

We hope you enjoy the talent and enthusiasm of our many young students in this evening of new and revisited dance works and thank you for encouraging their development through your ongoing support.

Shaaron Boughendiscipline Leader, dance

eXposition Choreography CsaBa BUdaY in collaboration with the dancers Costume design shaarOn BOUGhenLighting designer JasOn OrGanMusic ThOM WILLeMsdancers 1st Year BFa danCe PerFOrManCeduring the course of study this semester, our first year BFa dance (Performance) students were exposed to various dance genres (in terms of technical training) and associated practices. They were required to gain physical fitness and increase technical accomplishment, strength, flexibility and stylistic versatility through their training. The students also experienced dancing as soloists, with partners and in larger group scenarios. eXposition presents these elements experienced, through a pure dance work. Movement vocabulary was formed employing several methods: specifically choreographed for the individual student; through task-based instruction, which the students constructed; and from learning pre-existing material. Thom Willems dramatic and layered musical score informed the construction of new movement vocabulary; the development of pre-existing material; and the structure of the work.

But what I’m interested in is how they find pathways of bringing elements of themselves, their real selves, into the collaborative process and onto the stage. These girls are not intrinsically violent people, but I thought a great way to start was to find movements of violence and to see how these movements affect the dancers on stage and then us as the audience watching them. This work has been created as a collaboration with the dancers and I want to thank them for taking the risk – because letting go can be risky. The unknown can be risky. What if you fail? These young woman have been quite spectacular to work with over the last few months and they have reminded me how much fun dance can be. We were rehearsing the other day and a security guard walked in and said to me: “Why are you working with girls? Girls can’t throw properly”. That ridiculous statement is why I wanted to make this work. Because all of us have violence, anger and vengeance in us – why should boys be the only ones who get to show it? Thanks to the dance department staff who have supported this work and especially shaaron, sue and Csaba for commissioning it. Thanks to Jason and hannah for being wonderful to work with and to Mike riddle and sturt Chatfield for help with construction.

Flying hundreds of miles in search for food for their young, their flight paths often take them over the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – a trash vortex twice the size of Texas where there is six times more plastic than plankton. Plastic bags, drink bottles and caps, lighters and Lego toys wash off land and into the ocean… even cosmetic exfoliants including brands such as Ponds, neutrogena, Clearasil and Colgate contain small, coarse plastic pieces (polyethylene) that wash down the drain and straight into our oceanic food chain. additionally, about 18,000 plastic pieces circulate in every square kilometre of our world’s oceans. Millions of sea animals fall victim to our garbage every year. 500,000 albatross chicks are born at Midway each year. about 200,000 die, mostly of dehydration or starvation from the ingestion of plastic. When considering that plastic bags only hit consumer markets 32 years ago (1977), it seems outrageous that today, australians dump 7,150 recyclable plastic bags into landfill every minute.

What are we really throwing away? More than 70,000 bags will be consumed and binned for landfill in australia in the duration of this dance piece.
